It's genuinely mind-boggling to me. Water remains a nationalized utility in Scotland, paid for out of council tax with all profits being reinvested in R&D. Untreated sewage dumping is also still outlawed there.
The sums of money that are being quoted for the dividends paid out to share holders from the privatised water firms in England are insane. £57bn since 1991? More than £2bn a year on average? And almost no investment in infrastructure. Fuck me.

And many/most of them pay their dividends to overseas investment firms, such as a Canadian pension fund, various private equity vampires and the like, so the profit doesn't even stay in blightly.

Brexit was not as bad as the hysterical remoaners said to be fair. They said there would be lorry queues, food shortages, mass unemployment, medicine shortages, civil unrest, terrible recession, that aircraft couldn't take off, that there would be a bout of super gonorrhea. But it was all lies. What really happened? We had to fill out a few extra forms at the post office and a ham sandwich got confiscated going into the Netherlands. Brexit was a success. We reclaimed our sovereignty and dealt a severe blow to the metropolitan luvvy establishment. Is this person still around?

That's how we get all those nice beaches
"Less common but no less inviting beaches, devoid of quartz as a source of sand, rely on an entirely different ecologic process. The famous white-sand beaches of Hawaii, for example, actually come from the poop of parrotfish. The fish bite and scrape algae off of rocks and dead corals with their parrot-like beaks, grind up the inedible calcium-carbonate reef material (made mostly of coral skeletons) in their guts, and then excrete it as sand. At the same time that it helps to maintain a diverse coral-reef ecosystem, parrotfish can produce hundreds of pounds of white sand each year!"
It's funny how even animal waste does good but humans destroy everything. It's not funny

Of course, but we're going to have to sing "we are lumberjacks, luuuumber-jacks" to the tune of Maniac, from the hit movie Flashdance, all day

In all seriousness, I have looked at escaping once I retire. Fuck this country.

Did I mention the denim hotpants?
We're putting in a sponsorship application in November (Ms Danno is Canadian - and Bermudan, so there's a nice retirement plan). If all goes well I'll be out in a couple of years. Hopefully I can convince the authorities that Fontgeek are my extended family, or at least deserve asylum and I can send for you all soon afterwards

I was going to suggest that you all come to Ireland but this mention of denim hotpants changes things. Can I join the lumberjack party? I have a big axe.

I think the easiest route for me will be Scottish independence, then Scottish citizenship enabling us to fuck off to Europe once the kids have left school.

I spent a pretty big chunk of my life in Ireland. Enough to entitle me to dual citizenship at the time, at least. Absolutely gutted that I didn't bother doing it before I moved back to England, as it just didn't seem worthwhile due to free movement. Younger me is a fucking idiot!
Tried sending an impassioned letter to the dept of foreign affairs, who pretty much replied with "lol, no!"

I have a French wife, so I just need to A) remain married for one more year, and B) learn French.
I would love to think this would be the impetus I need to get half decent at the lingo, but I'm a bit lazy...

I can't remember the specifics from the Indy ref but seem to remember there was a way through that. May have been spin etc, but whilst I understand the nervousness by Spain, the situations aren't really the same. Time will tell I guess.

We got as far as getting a contract on the other side of the world to escape. Rented the house, sold a car, put a bunch of stuff in storage. Then, and I don't know if you folks will remember this, but early 2020 there was this - ever so minor really - health panic and NZ shut up tighter than a poor taste joke about nuns. (good news, 6 month on site has turned into ~2 years working from home, bad news home is still this angry little sewage island)

Yeah, my understanding is that the Spain/Catalonia objections to Scotland rejoining is overblown by those that reject the idea of Scottish independence. The situations are not comparable and Spain have pretty much said they wouldn't object. They have also been quick to acknowledge the independence of other nations. My guess is if this actually became a reality (feels less likely to happen now, at least until after N. Ireland joins the South), then Spain would make just enough noise to get something out of agreeing to Scotland rejoining, but would ultimately allow it.
