Space walk should be happening soon, amazed at how poor the picture quality is for an expensive mission like this!

Space walk should be happening soon, amazed at how poor the picture quality is for an expensive mission like this! That's because it's filmed in a remote studio somewhere. They don't want you to see the wires.

That was pretty cool. Would have been better if the drone had stayed a bit more still. I love the "Ok, that's close enough, drop it!" ending

Not in general, I quite like him typically. I just really really dislike that particular proposal as it's a complete waste of energy, figuratively and literally.

I don’t see it as a short term plan, but it would be essential in the long term. If we were to survive, as a species, as long as Dinosaurs, that is.
We’re predicted mass starvations this century and a population decline of nearly 50%, globally. We’re looking at a pretty miserable time in which the world will get uglier the more desperate it becomes. Maybe fund preventative measures in those respects first.
But, fast forward 300 million years, when our next and likely last supercontinent forms, and crops/grass dies out, along with most living livestock, then perhaps that would be a good time to have our space exploration shit together.

grey_matters Fair enough! I'm a big fan of Cox--
Wait, that came out wrong.
I really like Cox--
This is hard.
Hang on: it's difficult.
What I mean is, I like Brian Cox (the physicist, not the actor, although I'm sure the latter is great too) - he's a fantastic science communicator, and advocates for causes in which I believe.
On this particular topic, I'm with dangerousdave : it's not a short-term project, or even a medium-term one, as we obviously have more pressing issues to fund and address. In the long run, though, it's something we'll have to consider.
That said, I don't like the 'Manifest Destiny' implications of us conquering the solar system, never mind the wider galaxy; I also think that as we're clearly unfit to run the planet we have, we'll need to get our shit together before we think about moving to another one. (Not killing each other en masse over ancient, tribal disagreements would be a good place to start... and it'd save billions of dollars that we could spend on a space program, to boot!)

reminder that you can see big cox on your big telly* tonight bbc2 @ 9pm (or iPlayer)
if it's anything like previous programming it'll be entertaining enough while absolutely rinsing the BBC travel budget
* if you have a small telly your cox might be tiny

SpaceX is about to perform the first landing attempt of their new rather large rocket (in about 90 minutes), should be spectacular either way it turns out. www.youtube.com/live/YC87WmFN_As

Aging spacecraft starts up a radio transmitter it hasn’t used since 1981 from 15 billion miles away
As I'm sure I've mentioned before, I do so love stories about the Voyager spacecraft - two of our species' most remarkable achievements, in my book.

In that case, you should check out the JPL and the Space Age documentaries on youtube, but start with this one:
