Anyone else disappointed that it looked nothing like that to the naked eye? I feel TV has misled me.

I think from Iceland etc, it is more visible to the naked eye. I have seen reds & greens up here before, but last night it was wispy with a slight tinge of colour that became clearer with the longer exposure of night mode on the phone. Depends on the conditions i guess. Last night must have been good, because it wasn't that dark here, and it was still visible through the light pollution of towns & cities.

I wouldn't be exposing my kids to that amount of radiation. Probably upward of 1000 fukushimas.

I see stars but no colours in the sky... Bit gutted to have missed it last night so I'm not super enthusiastic about sleep right now!

Hoping you are seeing the start of something and realising it's only cloud cover is just the worst.

I don't remember England getting the northern lights all the time i lived there. But it seems petty common over the past 10 years. Were you guys just waiting till I'd gone? :-(

I wonder if those 4 astronauts on the ISS have been affected.

They will definitely have seen a bump in radiation, but luckily the ISS isn’t in a polar orbit, as charged particles are mainly attracted by the magnetic poles. Couple airlines that fly over the north pole decided to fly a more southerly route over Greenland though, but that’s more to avoid gps interference. Lots of astronauts report seeing flashes of light when they have their eyes closed, it’s presumed to be charged particles hitting the gelatinous goo in their eyes and scintillating, just to paint a picture of the environment they are in 24/7.

Saved me a trip to Iceland Seeing the Northern Lights has been a big thing for my wife as long as we've been together (25 years). We went to Iceland in October, had a great time, but zero aurora action. I've been looking at polar cruises, arctic train trips. Friday night was amazing from our back garden! Walked around the local park, getting amazing pictures. We are just to the south of Glasgow, and always thought that would scupper it, but it was to the south of us. Glad I couldn't be arsed driving somewhere to get a better view. Re phone/eye debate, I think any photos you ever see really increase the intensity. Now we all have devices in our pockets designed to focus as much light as possible.

Earliest and most distant galaxy ever observed

So that Galaxy came into existence and grew to that size in the same sort of timeframe that the Earth went from Dinosaurs to humans. Not to mention this was 12 billion years ago.
Damn.
