What was the Sega arcade football game that gave you a score for when you scored wonder goals? Was on the Dreamcast as well and you could save your best goals. VirtuaStriker?

Own up then; who did square balls across the 6 yard box to the annoyance of everyone else in the room? One of my mates used to do that. He also found a knack of coming into the box from out wide then shooting, the keeper would save it, but 9 times out of ten it would spill to his striker who was running in for a tap in. It was infuriating....

Yeah it was Virtua Striker, that was good for a multiplayer arcade blast, Sega had that market covered for a while with Virtua Striker, Virtua Tennis and Beach Spikers (volleyball). All great games

At times? More like constantly. It's bizarre - I never get angry or stressed at games. If I get close to that point I'll just turn it off or laugh at myself. Football games are a completely different kettle of fish though - suddenly the game glitched, my mate's a proper wanker and I'm using the shit pad. Nearly came to blows once, embarassing. I've also seen a friend of mine eject the game and launch it out of his window like a frisbee. Another friends' brother launched the Dualshock at the wall, then pulled the analogue sticks out of it, then ran it under water to make sure it was dead. Half an hour later he went to ASDA to buy another. I miss football games. Ha, tbf you would always blame a loss on having the shitty pad. The biggest annoyance was when someone wanted to play 2vs2 and you'd be stuck with a shit teammate and there'd be barely any communication between you while the other team were rifling in shots doing and annoying celebrations.

Sega Sports need to return. Worldwide Soccer on Saturn was great too. They should get the official FIFA license.

I vaguely recall a SNES game (Konami International Superstar Soccer?) where one of my mates discovered that if you cut across the box at a certain angle you could ALWAYS (100%) run passed the keeper and slide it in lol Utterly game breaking.

I'd also love a Sensible Soccer remake, with Wolves great Steve Bull inexplicably being the greatest striker on the planet.

Also special mention to the Godfather of PES, ISS on the SNES. Oh the memories of Valderama (Murillo) and Roberto Baggio (Galfano) strutting around the pitch and scoring wonder goals

Does no one have any love for the terrible commentary of ISS64?
"HE'S TAKEN A KNOCK!"
"JAPAN have taken the lead."
"GOAL! GOAL! GOAL! GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!"

Haha yeah the commentary always sticks in my head. A personal favorite was playing Germany on FIFA and you'd somehow manage to trigger a line way out of context: concede a nothing throw just inside your own half "MIROSLAV KLOSEEEEEE!!!'

I've kinda bummed FUT the last two years, as those creeps at Blizzard have fucked about with Overwatch 2 for so long, and apparently the beta is shit anyway. No other games that interest me at the minute really.
Probably played over 500 games of this seasons. It has never been easier to get ridiculous teams. Have Best, Cantona, Rooney, Garincha, etc. without spending any real money. You can only tell the small difference when you play a lot, otherwise it will just feel like every other FIFA.
Commentary is awful and needs turned off. Soundtrack was great this season though I thought.

As much as I enjoyed SWOS and PES etc., Emlyn Hughes International Soccer is probably when I was happiest.

Great shout. Loved Emlyn Hughes' Soccer. Also loved Tracksuit Manager, around at the same time. A solid pre-cursor to Champ Man.

Also loved USM in the mid-90s as far as management games went. This was before Champ became totally dominant, ofc.

Emlyn Hughes - the first game that, to me, felt anything like a proper football game. Played it to death. Then I got an Atari ST and one of the Kick Off games (2 I think), hammered that until the ST blew up. I was very, very upset

There were punch ups and tantrums in a lot of our games at school(uni, ha you old bastards). My uni days were spent playing FIFA. NBA Jam and NHL Hockey on the Megadrive. League tables and everything. How the fuck I passed, I have no idea. NHL megadrive was my uni addiction too. It’s another that I emulate every now and then but it’s not the same just playing the AI

FIFA player here (like, 10 hours a week FIFA player) and this weekend I gave eFootball a try. Despite this having a bunch of problems it's still got that PES feeling of building moves through good passing. The tempo is at least 50% slower than FIFA and as such it's literally a refreshing change of pace.
How are you PES-people getting on with it now it has had a few updates?
Do we know if it is planned to have a co-op mode (the reason we've stuck with FIFA for so long is that online co-op is our primary mode of play.

I binned it off until there are more game modes. I'm happy with PES20/21 with an updated Option file for the time being. I play exclusively offline and whilst I'd like Master League to have a refresh, it's fine really.

I played a load of FIFA 22 with my 6yo son over the weekend, and I must congratulate EA on finding a way to create a UI that's even worse than PES.
Gameplay is OK - passing is nice (too easy?), shooting has a decent feel, but the crossing is weird and fuck knows what's going on with corners.
Mind you we also tried a bit of FIFA Mobile, and it sets a new bench as the first football game that goes out of its way to prevent you from actually playing football.

Still better than Pes for me as you don't have to confirm every little thing you do.

Where FIFA is obviously lightyears ahead is the licencing stuff - there's no denying the immersive magic of playing at a genuine ground with authentic chants, music, flags, and even adverts.
And I was slightly amazed when we decided to play as Everton vs Brentford yesterday morning, and it recognised that it was a current fixture and so flashed up the live PL table.
Faces still look like plastic though.

I see FIFA will most likely be a 2K brand from 2023. I mean, fuck, if you thought the microtransactions with EA were scummy then I feel like 2K will be on another level going by what they do with the NBA games.

If 2k can make a football game as good as their basketball games then ea would be fucked.

Aren't the graphics amazing in the NBA games as well? Always happy for a new developer to take on a football game.
