I normally get a couple of bags of the flakes and a couple of bars. The limited edition cookies and cream bar they have is very nice, they introduced it at the Glasgow coffee festival. The Philippines bar is great, it genuinely tastes like banoffee pie.

On a less positive note, now my office has moved into the centre of town I thought I’d start trying some of the coffee shops at the top of Newcastle. Bad start this morning with a place called Anyone for Coffee, ended up walking out after waiting several minutes for anyone to look like they knew what they were doing. Been a long time since just walking into a coffee shop has immediately felt like a mistake.
Going to try Lagom later, it’s new so I’m curious.

Ooft. That's a bad start. How terrible did it seem to walk that quickly? I got a coffee from a restaurant last night that was terrible (the coffee not the meal!), but they did warn me it was the guys first night and he was trying to get it right.
He didn't, but at least i was warned! 🤣

Waited for five minutes behind two people who I couldn’t work out if they were waiting for service or waiting for drinks because there’s only one place to stand crunched up in the corner as there’s too many tables, while a couple of staff hid in another corner. It wasn’t that busy, half the tables were empty! I assume they survive on passing student trade as it’s right by the university.
I went to another place nearer the office, and they seem to have mastered the art of making almost completely flavourless coffee. I don’t think they just gave me one shot, unless it was a particularly thick one. Drinkable though, doesn’t taste stale or burned, and inexpensive. Place seems like it’d be decent if you want to have a sit with a milk drink maybe.

Normal service has been resumed: a lovely fruity Uganda from Lagom (roasted by Fika in County Durham, who run it) and one of the nicest pieces of millionaire’s shortbread I’ve had for a while. They were also getting some good looking ciabatta delivered while I was there. It’s a little out of the way but I’ve no complaints about the quality.

I no longer have an espresso machine so I’m going retro at the moment with preground beans and a french press from Ikea, I’m actually quite liking it

A change is as good as a rest, eh?
I went cafetiere and v60 for a bit a month or so back and it was a fine change for a bit, but back on the espresso-based drinks train now.
Got gifted some beans by ny folks from a roastery i had sworn off after the few packs i tried always being oily and over-roasted.
What are the odds of them learning how to roast properly in the interim?

There isn’t really room for an espresso machine in the flat we’re currently in so anything like that will have to wait. I’ll probably get a grinder soon enough though, maybe dip my toe into v60s

I have literally hit the bottom of my latest coffee bag, which is bad. So will peruse some of these recent filthy bag shots.

The Machina marketing is already taking hold. The mullet below also screams excessive attention to coffee preparation: I'm sold.

/makes note of wonky coffee
My over roasted beans bought as a gift by my folks from a local company I swore off ages ago are indeed as oily and shitty as expected.
Thankfully the coffee is ok(ish), will just need to clean out the hopper after. I even through away the beans that didn't fit in the hopper, which was a first as there were definitely more than 250g. Life's too short for that shit though and I have 2x square mile nice beans in a cupboard.

Ive been getting lots of Dak coffee. Milky Cake being the best coffee ive ever had but every one ive liked. Its a roaster that i can hit the tasting notes every time. Melondo was also crazy
Just opened Dak's Fluffy Peach, a washed Ethiopian. Does what it says on the box. Peachy, florals and oolong tea.
Also have an anaerobic natural Wush Wush from Murmaration that is really nice. Has that funky, winey edge to it from the anearobic process.

Machina coffees I ordered are good. Did go for one of the fancier ones which is fine, but no better then the standard beans.

Yeah I like anaerobic coffees a lot. Shame Dak is EU - not sure can cheaply get delivered to UK.

Yeah I like anaerobic coffees a lot. Shame Dak is EU - not sure can cheaply get delivered to UK. If you in London then Rosslyn have their Rosslyn X Dak collab, which looks to be the same as the Dak Orange County which is currently for sale. I got the anaerobic Murmuration Coffee from Rosslyn as it was their guest coffee last week. They still had a few bags on Friday. I get my Daks from Ethos Brothers which is on a farm near Ongar if thats anywhere near you. He gets in big batches on a regular basis but you'd probably want to check before travelling as stock and opening hours can be erratic.

Just Googled Rosslyn and found a colab with Prodigal... which is Scott Rao's roastery company. Eye-wateringly expensive bags lol.

Oh, tbf, there are some in £12-16 region, which is about my limit before I begin questioning what I'm doing.
