Or amazingly terrible!
I dunno, I'll probably be happy with this as long as it's interesting. The Wachowskis usually make unique and interesting things, even if the overall quality of the things is patchy.

I saw Clarisse Loughrey in the Independent give it a very positive review. She stands in for Kermode on the Friday show ever so often and normally like her takes (plus I remember seeing a video of her doing the show in a Mulholland Drive t-shirt, so she can't be wrong). Only stand in I actually normally bother to listen to.
Quite a bit of spoilery bits in the review (at least for the general set up), so may want to avoid.
I do get the impression that if meta winds you up than you are likely to hate it, so general audiences probably are going to be annoyed. I personally love that stuff, so looking forward to it, but I get why some may find that style grating.
Also, what is with all these reviews saying Reloaded was better than people think it is? It really isn't.

From what I have heard about it, the general premise does resonate with me so I think Im onboard. I am sick of remakes, reboots, reloads and extended universes.

I don't give a shit if it's just the trailers on repeat for 2 hours. I'm in.

I do like Clarisse Loughrey but stopped reading or listening to her reviews a very long time ago as they were far too many spoilery bits in them. Worst culprits are Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly. Avoid the reviews now and go for the scores on the doors if they have them.
I'm staying away from cinemas for the time being, so this (and No Way Home) are going to have to wait.

Oh I'm not watching it in the Cinema but it's getting gobbled up as soon as there's a legitimate way to watch at home.

Itās shit. The first act goes full meta which will delight fans of that stuff, but then it drops it all for stupidity for the rest of the film. The action scenes are indeed quite terrible, although theyāre barely the point of it - this isnāt really an action film and is nothing like any of the other films. Iām not even sure you can call it a sequel, really.
The ultimate premise (that Neo and Trinityās love acts as a super charger for the machines, but if they get too close the system resets like some weird breaker circuit) is just bollocks straight out of the Interstellar playbook.
There is a bunch of stuff that seems deliberately placed for fan speculation (eg is the modal Neoās own creation, or are the machines using it to make Neo a stealth admin and improve the Matrix?) and that does tie into the free will philosophy from the previous films, but itās just kind of surface. Iām kind of glad it exists because itās just so different, but itās still shit.

Bah, that's one to avoid then. I was hyped for this in the cinema, but if it's not really action, and the action is actually bad... then forget about it.
Even the action stuff in Reloaded was pretty good. But seriously, everything in these movies other than the action (and some of the original) is absolutely downright awful (imo).

Just watched it, I loved it.
The action scenes are good. But they are let down by a weird frame rate thing which makes it hard to follow what's going on.

Are they dropping frames?

They try to visualize differences in speeds during bullet time sequences by changing the frame rates of individual people and objects at random. I didnāt think it worked as a good visual myself.

All the praise for the sequels has made me put on the 2nd film. Just as well, theyāre going off Netflix in a week. Iām halfway through.
I quite like the plot. The rave was wtf but pretty. Itās the fights that are unnecessary. It was all done in the original and now Neo can do whatever but heās back to just kicking people. Itās like a JRPG sequel where youāre back to level 1.
Iāll be keeping you posted, I just know youāre hanging on to every word.

Are they dropping frames? See, this is why the industry needs to move away from Unreal. Should've used RE Engine instead.

Having watched 2 and 3 over consecutive nights (and realising we've probably not seen 3 since it came out), I'd say this film benefits from having watched the sequels.
And since no-one asked, I think 2 is better than 3.

I enjoyed that a lot to be honest. Far more than I thought I was going to. Only thing that really bugged me about it was Keanu's acting. He was full on self-aware wooden Keanu rather than the blissfully ignorant wooden Keanu he used to be before he became a bit of a meme.

I really enjoyed it too.
It's definitely my favourite sequel now.
It doesn't really add much to the original trilogy but doesn't take anything either.
Decent/10

I thought it was pretty good. The meta stuff didn't bother me and it felt like a pretty original and clever way to continue the story. A bit of humour also was a nice addition. The originals were all very serious indeed which works when the mystery is intriguing, but once the story gets a bit too silly and yet remains deadly serious, the whole thing becomes a joke.
The fight scenes seemed to be poorly filmed in most cases, too much shaky cam and close up views so you don't get much of an idea of what is going on...though perhaps that was deliberate. At least there is no dreadful cgi fights.
It also seems quite a slight movie. Did much get really achieved by the end? Are they doing more? I'd be content either way I think.

It just seems to exist to set up more sequels, to the point of one of the characters actually saying that out loud.

I've got to say though; much as I enjoyed it, these characters have the worst aim with guns I've ever seen.

Criticisms include Neo fighting everyone when he should just be exploding them or opening the floor under them or enclosing them in carbonite and thatās generally the biggest one. Heās just wasting time, his and everyone elseās. I liked how in the 2nd part of the film itās all drama until he gets there because when he does he just saves the day as it should be. Music during the highway chase is awful, as far as I can tell itās all sped up farts. Morpheus talking about fate was cringe worthy. Itās laughable how the agents canāt hit anyone (Trinity). Cool ending, though. Much better than I thought it was. The Matrix still needed no follow up. 7/10

On thing for people who've seen 4 When they go to rescue Trinity's body, Morpheus has to get in in pixelated form through a tiny access tube, having been dropped off by a friendly robot, while being chased to that access point by bad machines. How did the humans get there to help him?

How did the humans get there to help him? It looked to me that when Morpheus got into that chamber he opened up another vent for the humans to get through.

Thought it was fine. Cool ideas and a decent storyline let down by surprisingly dull action and some really WTF slow-mo. Still probably my favorite of the followups, though it once again highlighted that the original film's nigh-on perfection can never really be replicated.

I enjoyed it well enough. Better than I expected, actually. Not as much as Matrix 2, but definitely above 3. But yeah, the fights were often let downs. Most fights being Neo just bullet shielding force pushing kind of betray that Keanu's 50 and he can't really kung fu everything anymore.
