I think one issue is that some parts of The Animatrix or the game are almost necessary to understand what the fuck is going on in the movies. They were trying to do this whole multimedia 'year of the matrix' thing iirc. Relying on people in one media having knowledge from another media is a dumb idea.
It's like the way they explained all the background of General Grievous in (admittedly awesome) 2 minute animated shorts and if you hadn't seen those then having this wheezing robot was a bit weird and confusing.

You know, I really like The Architect scene as well. Having a dialogue-heavy scene (even if it is written like a tryhard A-level philosophy essay) after so many fights in which the whole plot is turned on its head and the Architect basically tells Neo everyone's wrong, he's fucked, and we've done this twelvety times before, it's all just statistics and probability, is quite cool.
I'm still disappointed, although the Animatrix hints at it, that they didn't go more down the humanity is bad, the machines actually saved everyone road.

The concept is cool, it's the implementation that's the problem.

In hindsight it probably wasn't the best idea to shoot the last 2 films back-to-back like they did. Some of the ideas from Animatrix would probably have best been served being in the actual films, really.

I can't stand the sequels and I've kind of cooled on the original when I watched it recently. It's done that thing where something that was really cool at the time has become kind of lame. All the PVC and school shooter chic clothing is a bit cringy now.

The (probably accidental) genius of it, though, is that the movie is set in the year 3000 or something and everyone is stuck in the 90s.
It looked contemporary(ish) at the time and now it does properly look like everyone is stuck in a bubble.

Yeah it did the time capsule thing unintentionally, what Dark City did intentionally.

Well they should all have curtains and be wearing global hypercolour tops then. Not the leather gimp suits.

Hypercolour? What late 90s did you live in?

It wasn't really about the films having philosophy or not, more about how the philosophy was presented and integrated. For me, the philosophy in the first one felt like it was in service to helping tell the story. And it felt more out of place in the second. But whatever, people disagree, that's ok. I still think the Wachowskis maybe needed someone to tell them no at some point. Going back to previous page, but I get what you mean and do agree. You can't tell the plot of the original without the philosophy elements being present. On occasion there are some on the nose moments (camera shots that linger on book titles, for example), but for the most part the story comes from the ideas and naturally develops. They are fully integrated throughout and never grinds the plot to a halt, feeling one in the same with what is going on on the screen. The sequels don't do that and instead might as well have some dialogue sections forwarded by Jennifer Aniston popping up and saying "here comes the philosophy bit". You can skip those sections and not really lose anything from the fairly generic sci-fi plots and McGuffins.

Global Hypercolour was very much a 90s thing. I don't even think they existed in the 80s did they?

You could’ve walked into Cyberdog in Camden wearing any of the characters outfits and not looked out of place in 1999. You probably still could today to be fair

You probably still could today to be fair Popped into Cyberdog about a decade ago and they had the most hilariously awful Matrix code print suit... I often daydreamed about winning the lotto and buying random shit like that to wear for the lols in my notice period.

Rewatched the whole trilogy recently. 2 and 3 weren't as bad as I remembered but definitely not a patch on the first one. It was way closer to reality and just grittier and cooler. And had a far far better soundtrack. Sequels were fine and actually made more sense than I'd remembered (and to be fair I pretty much couldn't remember the plots of those at all, don't think I've seen them since they were in the cinema). Still not sure how Neo gets the ability to use matrix powers in the real world? Did he have a wi-fi implant that got activated or something? Looking forward to the new one but expectations aren't high 😁 yeah, I really like sequels these days, the second especially. Neos connection via WiFi is that he’s always connected as he is a planned part of the machines plan

More impressions seem to be rolling in. A very common criticism is that the action scenes are shit and very poorly shot and edited, which is…not particularly what you’d want from a Matrix movie. Also that it does go full Deadpool at times with its meta-winking.

^ Action scenes being shit doesn't really bode well for a Matrix movie. Maybe time and technique has moved on? We all know Keanu and Henwick can do decent action these days.
Does anyone know how much you need to know about the originals to enjoy the new one? Because while I vaguely remember them, it's a loooong time since I watched 2 and 3 and they were rather complicated and there's no way I'm rewatching them. If 4 assumes some deep knowledge of matrix 2/3 events and lore then I'm gonna be rather confused.

From what I’ve heard it touches on everything, even the stuff in Matrix Online, but it’s watchable with just the bare knowledge from 2+3 (war stopped, truce happened, Neo and Trinity “dead”)

Also that it does go full Deadpool at times with its meta-winking. I suppose they thought the 90's self serious style wouldn't have been very appealing for modern audiences? Good old post-modernism, fine in small doses but I don't really want to see it everywhere. Hopefully it doesn't go too far.

Reading Rotten Tomatoes reviews always confuses me, since they pick out the most positive and negative points from each review. It makes every movie seem both amazing and terrible
