Text hasn't been an issue for me in any of the games I've played and my eyes are fucking shite these days. The screen is really very good for a 1080p, non OLED, non HDR.

Yep subtitles on 'small' setting are perfectly readable.
I've played for another hour or so now and like I said earlier, game changer for me.

Oh, also, if you run any games in fidelity mode on your TV make sure you flick over to Performance for the best experience on the Portal. I booted up Control, which I'm currently playing through on Graphics mode on the big TV and it felt and ran abysmally on the Portal. Once I switched to 60fps it felt brilliant. Was the same to a lesser extent with Ratchet and Clank's Magic Insomniac 120hz mode.

Just buy and stack? Or just buy wallet funds in the sale, assuming they are discounted and wait for the auto renew to use them. The discount is only for new members, so you can't stack. Shopto wallet funds are probably my best bet. Can't stack but since mine expires on 22 I wonder if it would count me as a new customer if I sign up again on the 23 for the 30%. I'll wait and see. I hope it's not for first time members.

Just gave it a little stress test. Son's upstairs playing the Xbox online with his mates, Netflix is playing on the downstairs TV, so pretty much the bandwidth conditions I'd expect to play it in.
Started a new game on Astro's Playroom and did a full uninterrupted run of the 4 stages and the T-Rex boss. Zero dips in image quality throughout, zero dips in latency, it played just as it would have on the PS5. While it isn't the most difficult game in the world, a few sections require some fairly precise inputs using different Dualsense features to get through and it didn't let me down.
Seal of approval from me. It's killed pretty much all of the concerns I had coming out of the reviews in the few hours I've used it. Might be a different story if you're looking to work on your K/D on Call of Duty online with it mind you, but for me this is ideal.

Great write ups mate, summarised much more deeply and fully than I could have

The ultimate stress test has to be playing a game that the PS5 itself is streaming, does require PS+ Premium to do the double streaming test though!

A 30-40 meg connection wouldn’t be a bottleneck though, would it, since that’s your speed to the internet. Internally it’d have more throughput since it’s kinda an intranet and device to device? Yes, I’m in the market for a bridge if anyone’s selling.

It doesn't allow streaming cloud games currently but there's a bit of noise that it might be implemented at a later date. I'm not that fussed about that side of things though, I don't even use cloud streaming on my PS5 directly.

So it doesn't allow you to start a streaming game on the PS5 and then continue on the Portal? I didn't mean directly, without using your own PS5, which is clearly something that will turn up at some point.

Nah it only plays games locally downloaded to the PS5 at present. If you select one from the streaming library currently it just blocks you out when you're on the Portal.

Teardown is supposed to be great on the PC at least.

As mentioned in the disappointing games of 2023 thread, if you're a Y-inverter Teardown doesn't currently support it.
Which disappointed me!

Yeah, saw this yesterday when I booted it up. Immediately turned it off. It's absolute basic accessibility that shouldn't be missing in any game.

That's pretty terrible. Depends on the game if I invert, but generally I do.

Can't believe I'm amongst so many inverted heathens.
I've played a bit of it but it doesn't feel quite as fun as it 'should' in principle. It's a bit more methodical than I was expecting. Might get better as you unlock more tools though, there are some moderate RPG elements in there.

I’m an inverter.
Isn’t it simply gamers of a certain age are likely to be inverters because that’s how games were in the old days.
Still don’t understand what kind of deviant inverts X axis mind.

I’m a Y inverter. It definitely comes from having played lots of Microprose flight sim games in my youth - pull back on the stick to go up; push to go down. Left is still left and right is still right. Completely natural. Makes me wonder if future generations of would-be pilots are going to find it just as hard to go the other way… making excuses for inadvertently plunging 2,000 ft like “someone has been messing with the settings…”

I think Starwing was the first game that I remember defaulting to inverted, so would've been the first game I changed back to normal controls...
Weirdly I don't mind inverted for flight sims, as it makes perfect sense there. Anything else gets switched to sensible mode.

Good news on the headset front with the Portal. You can still use one if you're dongled in to your PS5 and close enough to it. Using my Pulse with it at the moment and it works a treat, you basically just need to mute your Portal if using it. So less need for buying new audio device just for it.

Had fuck all to do at work today so got three hours in on Arse Creed Mirage on the Portal. Really satisfying.
Re: those games being added to PS4/5 in a few days, saw Grandia is amongst them. That alone makes it a great month even if the rest are shite!

Some pretty decent discounts, just going down my wish list:
Last of us part 1 (-38%) Metal: Hellsinger (-66%) Gran Turismo 7 (-38%) Kings Quest complete collection (-85%) Sifu (-60%) Dark Souls Remastered (-50%) Lies of P (-20%) Lords of the Fallen (-30%)
Leaning towards Sifu + Lies of P but both could be PS+ at some point. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

FIFA is -50% too but still not convinced I need that in my life.
