Do you *need* the expensive app for it to work properly? My kishi is ok but the BB feels like it would be a decent upgrade, especially if theres a black friday deal around.

Nah. It's just a hub that contains all the apps, some quick start games, and some community stuff. They give you a year and I will 100% be binning it.

Mine's been shipped. Still quite excited to try it but I'm definitely concerned my connection is going to cause problems given the reviews.

Thankfully that’s the thing I’m not worried about. I might get one to try in Jan.

Normally a sucker for most playstation hardware but just not seeing the appeal for me. Also as someone who uses his switch 99% docked I get the feeling I'd barely end up using it.
Good luck to those who are biting the bullet, may your internet connection remain as stable as the UK economy.

I'm looking forward to see what the split is between those still using it after 6 months compared to those who have it lying in the draw of unused tech shame.

I see they are already being scalped on eBay so I could make an accidental profit if my poor haggard WiFi cannae take the strain.

I assumed there would be a direct wifi option for in house at least.

Anyway, annoyingly, the boy has somehow dislodged the thumb cover on one of the pads. Christ knows how he manages it.

I don't really play those sort of games anymore. I'm more geared towards using it for polishing off trophies on games I've finished and probably some RPG's I've never had much chance to get around to. I'll still play all the big hitters on the TV.

I've seen one with bids on it for like £240. I did read that pre orders had sold out pretty fast but I don't know how exaggerated that is.

Just buy and stack? Or just buy wallet funds in the sale, assuming they are discounted and wait for the auto renew to use them.

Third party sellers will probably be dropping the price of PS+ as well so getting a code from ShopTo and others will probably work, I'd imagine the price will drop for Christmas as well so waiting is also an option if they don't.

A pretty decent video about getting a Portal up and running from PlayStation Access.

Mine has just arrived. Just installing stuff now but my first impression is just how comfortable the thing is to hold. I always struggle cramping up with handhelds but this is easily the most ergonomically friendly small screen device I've ever held.

Mine has also arrived. I use remote play a fair amount and have a ludicrously good internet connection (humblebrag).
I have a different router in my office at the bottom of the garden so what drew me to this was that you don't have to be on the same WiFi to stream. I'm now nowhere near my PS5 playing absolutely perfectly with effectively a PS5 controller.
Absolute game changer for me, so many boring calls I have to be on with no relevance that now I can just zone out and play PS all day.

Okay so I've had a couple of hours with the Portal now, and I'm seriously impressed with it. Some thoughts, apologies if it turns out to be word vomit. I'll preface this by saying Speed Test has me firmly set between 35-50mbps all the time so my connection is nothing to shout about at all.
I did not get off to a great start. The updates were fine and connecting to my PS5 was a doddle, but I made a mistake of choosing Destiny 2 to be the first game I tried with it. I played a Strike and there was a little bit of sluggishness there. I'm 100% confident if I went into a Raid with my group I wouldn't be a burden using it, but the delay definitely was enough to be in the back of my mind while playing. There's no way I'd even try and play competitively with it.
This is when I learned the error of my ways and started trying the stuff I was more likely to play on there, i.e. single player, mostly offline stuff. I've put pretty much my entire current library through it, so to give you an idea:
- Returnal - Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart - Control - Uncharted PS5 Collection - Resident Evil 4 - GTA V - EAFC (offline game) - Ghost of Tsushima - Astro's Playroom
After giving them all a test I can say I'd be comfortable playing every single one of those games on the Portal. Returnal surprised me the most as I thought it would feel unresponsive but it had next to no delay on inputs when playing which I'm guessing is down to it not doing any heavy online lifting. I also played through the classic car chase scene in Uncharted 4 and it felt great. Won a game of EAFC 4-0 on world class. Managed to find one of those Bamboo QTE things on GoT and cleared it first time.
Screen is very very good for a 1080p, colours pop nicely. Haptics are excellent and it was unbelievable comfy to hold for the 2 hours or so I've had it glued to my hand. Sound is pretty tinny from the speakers but it seemed like a Bluetooth adapter worked for me in the USB-C slot so I'll give some earphones a go later.
Oh and also I carried it around my house, which is notoriously bad for having spots the WiFi just hates to work properly and the image quality never dropped once in the entire time I used it. Obviously this will differ from home to home but I wasn't expecting it to be any good in the places everything else is usually shite in.
Really good first impressions overall. Obviously it's a complete novelty if you have access to your main screen all the time but I think I'm going to get some good use out of this when my wife or kid want to watch something on the big TV.

Well this all sounds very promising. Sounds like a nice addition for those partner-watching-shit-on-tv nights.

What's the text size like? I know it's not a main concern with the device, but is it readable?

My steam deck streams PS5 perfectly, but the screen and controller sound way better...FUCK.
