I generally despise Roguelikes - hated Spelunky and got bored very quickly with Hades - but I absolutely loved Returnal.
I think the simple reason is that it plays so well. It’s a really, really good third person shooter and though it feels hard at first, it really does get easier with practice and knowledge of the levels.
The key lesson is not to lose health early on so the green pickups extend your health bar rather than just replenishing what you lost. That helps immensely.
Definitely give it a go.

I think my death count was about 15 and 10 of those were to the first boss which is the hardest part of the game. Everything after that just clicked into place and I was a ballet dancer of death.
Like Nick said, the connections are randomised but you quickly remember the rooms and layouts of them.

I think I've had about 30 deaths and still haven't even downed the first boss, so let's not be throwing around low stats like that's the norm! :-D
I adore the Returnal vibe, but I do struggle with my own consistency in it and sometimes the graphics show their low res underpinnings which I find a bit distracting. Looking back, I should've just waited for the PC version.
As it's on PS+ though it's definitely worth setting aside an hour or two just to soak up the opening and the atmosphere. It really is very well done, and worth a shufty even if you end up binning it very rapidly.

I bet once you get past that first boss you won't struggle with the rest.

Can't say it was all easy for me after boss 1. The third area is hell with those homing missle enemies. Think the boss of that area was a bit of a pain too.
As these kind of games go though, it isn't as challenging as some others.
Also, on Deathloop, I wouldn't worry too much about repetition. It is a much more linear game than its premise would suggest.

Spent a bit of time with it this afternoon. Got to (what I assume to be) the first boss just after the vault . Still trying to get my head around the mechanics a bit. Seems decent but also seems like the sort of game I’ll get fed up with and never finish. I’ll proceed for now though.

There’s also a yellow gate which is optional and works like a challenge room - you get locked in and have to defeat a few waves of enemies. They’re not easy but there’s usually some good loot at the end of it if you survive!

Yeah that’s the fella.
So I guess I keep going in, see if I can find a decent weapon then head to the boss. Not sure it’s for me long term but I’ll give it a fair shot!

You're going to want to clear the entire level before going to the boss every time.

It’s definitely one of those games where at first you think you’ll never get good, but when it clicks you can tear through levels in minutes.
The random nature of the power ups is the most annoying part. I got reliant on certain ones and if they didn’t drop I’d abandon the run.

I’m also still not sure on all the mechanics. Like how proficiency works for example.
Anyway there is probably a thread for this so I’ll take the discussion over there.

Good piece of advice that went out when it first released was make sure to turn on autorun.

And use the sword to close the space. Helps to be aggressive rather than picking off from a distance. That was the biggest learning curve for me.

Cancelling my PS++ has also cancelled my PS+, I seem to have just bombed it out altogether rather than dropping it down a tier.
Is there any method of pissing about to get a cheaper sub like gamepass or is the price pretty much just the price?

Discount gift cards is the best option these days - ShopTo have an £84 one for £70 if you want an annual PS Plus Extra sub: www.hotukdeals.com/deals/playstation-store-gift-card-ps84-ps5ps4-psn-shopto-4107305

The store automatically offered me a discount of 35% for Extra and Premium. Don't know if that was just luck of timing or not.

Was that near renewal time Dougs do you remember? My Extra is about to run out and I'm not sure I'll bother renewing at full price.

Soooooo, what to do if one is unfortunate enough to suddenly have stick drift? Can you flush the fuckers out with switch cleaner or something? Annoyingly, it’s just started on the one I bought 5 months after launch, the OG controller is fine.

I had it and took it apart and cleaned it out. Worked for about a month before I had to bite the bullet and buy a new one.
