The high school have been canny, as the current Year 9 sound like they are a nightmare (understandable considering their age etc). They've announced that if they manage to keep a clean slate (punctuality, attendance, no negatives and so on), they'll be taken to Alton Towers.
My kid is a good lad, so it's a fair reward for the ones who aren't a bunch of bellends.

The eldest's school does similar - top 50 kids in yrs 7-10 in terms of positive behaviour points get one trip out a term. He managed it in the first term this year but not last term. The problem I have is that it penalises either those with health conditions who can't make a perfect attendance and/or those kids who just sit in the middle just plodding on.

Back into exam season, the first round of Highers this time. Bleh. Wish us all luck. I think yesterday was the time he realised he probably hadn't done enough studying despite us nagging him from before the easter holidays. I know you can't do it for them, but FFS lad, learn from the time before dammit!! Have spent all Easter on at my youngest (Nat 5S), he's a nightmare. My Dad took my Spectrum away during the exams - but I can't remove his PC when he "studies" on it! Unlike his older brother, he's hopefully bright enough to do OK and get by. Would rather he was excelling like his big sis They say all boys are like this, but that can't be true as we get male Drs, lawyers, engineers etc. Now stressed waiting for return of daughter from first exam. She needs to knock it out the park to get her first choice. If the boys were like her, life would be a lot easier!

Yeah this sucks - same as dental appointments and braces. Our boy (who's doing really rather well in school, and commended constantly by the teachers) has missed out on a few of these rewards whilst absolute bellends get to go. It seems to be because the bar is higher for the smarter kids (which I get), whereas Billy Ballbag gets reward points if he can go 45 minutes without banging his head on the desk 4 times and calling his TA a cunt.

I find that kind of reward absolutely awful! Can't imagine it has good basis in evidence.

Good luck to the junior dams for their exams. Which exam was your daughter sitting today? Our lad was doing geography, which he needs to do well in as he wants to do geophysics/geosciences, so needs a good mark before the uni applications start.
Thankfully, he seems to think it went pretty well, which is great, & i hope he is right. He did not seem that confident this morning, but that was probably nerves & him knowing the pressure was on for this one!

Are actual main exams happening already? My daughter had a GCSE French speaking exam today, but she’s got a decent gap before the main ones start in earnest.
She thinks it went ok, thank goodness, as she was nervous yesterday despite plentiful revision and a good predicted grade.

She needs a A* for that, and As for Chemistry and Physics. Luckily she gets her brains off her mother.... Any tips on getting a 16 yr old to actually study? Cattle prod didn't work. Nat 5 Physics today! He'll be fine, but he shows a distressing lack of worry about the whole thing.

I'm not 100% sure it will work though. What does seem to work is sitting and working through stuff together. We walked through a Biology paper the other day and it seemed beneficial.

We went the bribery route last year, nothing nuts, but 30 for an A, 15 for a B, nada for a C as that was the bare minimum we were hoping for. Between the shit prelims where he promised the 'educational comeback of the century', he did achieve that and ended up with a healthy sum.
Probably do similar this year, although no pricing structure has been agreed yet, as it's more about trying to get enough for university since that's what he wants to do, so it's more on him.
A bit of minor bribery to help him on his way too though. Less exams, but more important so we'll maybe have to bump it up a bit for the bonus possibilities.

My Dad matched us too, so he doubly scored, the lucky git. My old man was never generous like that for me!

At the kid's school the ultimate reward for being really good is having a hot chocolate with the head teacher. Our oldest gets really excited about it and has been once and told she would another time but didn't. If the youngest had to she'd just sit there crying (7 and 5).

That could be seen as really creepy. "Come in to my office; I have not chocolate" *licks lips*

Hot chocolate Friday, my daughter was very pleased when she got a turn. It's weird.

Glad it’s not just me that thinks it’s weird.
Also doesn’t fit with the heartily eating they always go on about, but I’ve found they’re really awful for that. Making cakes in class, letting kids give out sweets when there’s birthdays, cakes for schools lunch puddings, bake sales etc.
I don’t mind them doing it but they can’t claim they promote healthy eating as well.

I'm starting to think our kids go to the same school Reviewer as that is exactly what happens at ours. It's endless.

Do they have weekly visits to the forest with the PE teacher? If so then it could be the same.

Not any more. Our wild tribe has been moved to one whole day a term. I'm sure a lot of primary schools are the same, but it just sounded eeerily similar for a moment

School bus fares. Talk to me guys, how much are we paying? Nuffink. Free bus fares up here until they're in their 20's i think with the young scot card. It's nation-wide too, the lucky gets.

Lunch is a different thing altogether mind, can barely pay enough to keep him in meal deals and subways etc. Prices rises all round, he's finally realised he can't have a foot long sub *every* day thankfully. Teens and their hollow legs are a nightmare. Always starving, as I'm sure we all remember.
This was also on top of the bacon roll in the morning because he got up too late to have anything before legging it from the house!

Aye, no bus fares as he bikes/walks/occasional lift when my wife is feeling soft.
Lunch though. Fiver a day if I can't be arsed making a packed lunch/PE day. Just eats for England.

The oldest (yr 3) gets school lunches. It's £2.25 a day and even if a bit shit it's better than sandwiches and daily debates about what she has.
I don't get the kids in reception, yr1 and 2 that take packed lunches though. The food is free and is ok, and it isn't for unusual dietary requirements.

Both boys are walking distance from primary and high school. Youngest is on school dinners since he's in Year One, and the Eldest has 2 school dinners a week and makes his own butties to take to school on the other days.
