Bloody hell Dougs, that sounds awful. Fair play to your little man for going in today. Glad he's alright. Why do the majority of kids seem like utter dicks these days?
(No, YOU'RE an old man!)

He was happy as Larry this morning really. Super proud of him for going in, shows some balls and strength. The easy thing to do would have been to stay at home. I think his sister being off school sick so he'd have been unable to sit in the living room and play games all day (PSV2 as his birthday present in particular- he paid half, we paid half!) probably played a part though!
The school seem to be taking it seriously today. We'll see I guess.

Makes no difference to us, our youngest's school aren't striking thank goodness so he's in as normal, our eldest hasn't been into school for probably about 2 months now give or take a few days here or there so we're on the verge of really shitty letters from the council now, starting to discuss which one of us is gonna take the bullet for the fine/criminal record. So we have the dreaded meeting at the school tomorrow with the Council, to get hauled across the coals and justify why we shouldn't get prosecuted, thank goodness we've actually been able to get him into school for a few days since we had the letter, not that he's doing any actually work, just going into their special class for anxious and the like kids. Hope to fuck he goes in tomorrow!

Good luck mate. Such a ridiculous position you are being put in. Not the way it should be.

The youngest has chickenpox. Fortunately the older two have already had it. Its a bit of a relief in some ways to get it out the way. Even if it is a few days of misery for the poor kid.

I'm sure it's been said before but definitely better to get the chickenpox when they're young. I got it in my twenties and it absolutely floored me for a few days, properly weak as water and miserable. Kids can handle it a lot better. Just keep the Calpol and calamine lotion on hand.
Edit: just remembered that doctors recommend you don't use neurofen for treating chickenpox.

Yeah she's apparently got loads of spots come up since this morning. Glad to get it done with to be honest. My boy ended up having it twice though. Once when he was very young and again a few years ago. Apparently when you get it really young there is a chance you can get it again. 3 seems a good age to get it, that's when the middle one got it too.

It's been so long since we've been on holiday I don't know where to begin. What's a reasonable price? Whether taking kids out of school is as dramatic as they make out? Where to even go?!
It must be all of 13 years since we've booked a foreign holiday (a weekend in Paris for me and the mrs aside). We've never taken the kids abroad but at 13 and 10 this year we want to start thinking about booking something for next summer.
There's no way I'm paying twice as much for an August holiday (I just couldn't afford it!) so we're looking at either June or October. Something All-Inclusive with plenty of entertainment in the evening and swimming and what-not during the day.
What's the general consensus? Can you build stuff like this yourself, or is it best to look at TUI etc?

In exactly the same boat. With the added complication that as my wife works in a school, we can't even take them out of school. The prices are genuinely eye-watering, to the point that it is unaffordable, despite my latent scotchness. Talking £4k+ for a week all inclusive. Cheapest way is probably in term time (£500+ fine...). Sharing a villa with another couple/grandparents cheapens things too.

We used On The Beach last year, which worked out well - You bundle it all together yourself and it's apparently a bit cheaper.
The Canary Islands for us - been a few times, different resorts and we all loved it.
edit - same as Dougs - my wife is a teacher, so had to suck up the extra since we've dated...

This year, our lad had exams and then a 3 week period during the exam leave which would have been perfect for a cheap holiday abroad outwith the holiday expense window of the regular holiday periods. Sadly, because we got a new kitchen put in, we have no money to make the most of this. I'm almost certain that next year, he will have exams right up to the end of the study leave time.

The Canary Islands are unexplored by us, so they were high on the list despite my list really being "Spain/Portugal/Canaries/whatever's cheapest+best"
I'd love to do a fortnight but 10 days is probably optimal given we'd likely do a one room thing (unless, like was said, we choose to invite the grandparents).

Hopefully I've earned some brownie points from my cynical teen daughter by scoring her tickets for Lovejoy (a popular beat combo, not a stage revival of the classic 80s TV show).
My 19 yr old had the funeral of a friend yesterday, hopefully they'll pull through that. Feels like their childhood has properly ended. Parents are struggling to say anything that helps other than the usual cliches. It's something they shouldn't have to go through. Fuck cancer.

Thanks all. Now back home looking after her brother who, not wanting to be upstaged, decided yesterday would be a good time to get chicken pox.

Well done!! I'm so far removed from small babies that it seems like a great idea!
Got me thinking, probably won't be long till we need a Grandparenting Thread....

Just deposited the lad at school at an ungodly hour so he can go on a WW1 war graves tour. The lucky get. I'm jealous, since I would love to do that!
Now having a nice coffee to wake up before going to work.
House seems too quiet already.

Could you not have volunteered as a parent helper?! It's weird, they never needed anyone on trips down south to see Premier League football matches....

There were no additional helpers required. It's a few teachers and some folk from the tour company giving them the spiel throughout. Otherwise I'd have been there! I was possibly going to the netherlands or spain with his fitba team, but covid fucked that right up, so they went on some team-binding/activities day with karting, zorbing, kayaks etc instead of a weeks training abroad. He is off to Iceland with geography later in the year too. Volcanos, chilling in the blue lagoon etc. Again, no help required either. Bet plenty teachers were up for that one though!
