It was VisionExpress, but it seems the way that a lot of opticians are going, hiring the minimum number of qualified specialists and filling the gaps with uninvested teenagers. I don’t blame the teenagers - they’re teenagers; of course they don’t give a shit. But the management can fuck themselves.

Not used them in years. All about the £££ innit. How long until dental nurses or hygienists are doing check ups?

Not used them in years. All about the £££ innit. How long until dental nurses or hygienists are doing check ups? 100% I was whinging to my sister about this recently - how all these service companies are riding their brand whilst slicing away all the layers of their actual service. Which is fine if you’re a non-medical/health company but hugely damaging if you are. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that we all need to actively manage our own health matters because no other cunt is going to do it for you because it impacts their margins. The other lesson is Get your eyes checked at least once a year. Eye operations aren’t as fun as they might sound.

Defo. I took a squash racket to the race about 25 years ago and was lucky to escape with only bruising of the eyeball. Consultant chap said to make sure that the pressure is checked in that eye annually as there's a chance it could all go south. I also pay the extra for the full gubbins/scans etc that Specsavers offer.

Specsavers are actually really good, at least ours is. I never get my glasses from there because the selection is pretty shit but the actual medical side of it has always been pretty faultless. Especially when the girl graduated out of pediatric opticians and into a normal, high street check up. They were really good with her.

There is a teachers strike today right? Haven’t seen it mentioned on the news websites or anything. It’s my wife’s WFH day so she’s done her usual trick when the kids are home in moving the computer to the dining table for some stupid reason. ends up spending all day telling the girls to be quiet because she’s in a meeting. It’s perfectly peaceful in the office

Mocks? We have real exams here. Managing the boy to study for his nat 5/gcse equivalent thing and not waste time has been a challenge.
Especially when he has 4 of them next week. Studying in the easter hols was, of course, utterly minimal. Even with all his exams being done super early and then getting 3 weeks of 'study leave' as holidays.
Shame we got a new kitchen recently and can't use that time for the first non-term holiday in ages!

Both schools open here but the boy is off ill anyway. Had the HPV vaccine on Tues and has been off colour since. Or he's got a bug, one of them.

Makes no difference to us, our youngest's school aren't striking thank goodness so he's in as normal, our eldest hasn't been into school for probably about 2 months now give or take a few days here or there so we're on the verge of really shitty letters from the council now, starting to discuss which one of us is gonna take the bullet for the fine/criminal record.

Shame we got a new kitchen recently and can't use that time for the first non-term holiday in ages! Eldest boy was like that - not very academic. Daughter is doing her highers - she's been up every day at 7am. Never had to ask her about homework. She considers under 90% a failure. Youngest is in S3....he's as lazy as his brother but smart like his sister. Doing exams at the moment, half hoping he does badly so that he appreciates he has to do some work, but I think he'll do OK, confirming to him that he can still game for 12 hours a day instead of studying.

Yep, all gone very quiet about the strikes innit. The school didn’t send any reminder about it, just got an email at 10 this morning asking if anyone had lost a purse that’s been handed in. I was sat there wondering if it’d been cancelled without me knowing, had to dig through the BBC site to find out

Ah man, the first cold's always memorable. You feel so bad for the wee ones when they're miserable and it keeps you on edge. Don't worry though, give it a couple of years till he's in crèche or playschool and it'll feel like he's constantly got some kind of dose. It was a long winter of coughs and sniffles this time around.

Yep, and then starts to even off when they reach 6/7 or so. It's a hard slog though!

My boy is four and it feels like he - and we - have had colds for pretty much the whole year. Mostly post-Covid weak immune system I guess - but also because four year olds are filthy, horrible creatures.

Yeah we’re just starting the latest round. This winter seems especially bad. Don’t think we’ve had a break of more than a week!

Covid kicking my arse at the moment, eldest had it first and he was unwell but coped fine but me and the other half are struggling. Just waiting for the extremely high maintenance 4 year old to catch it now to complete the set.

Thanks for the kind words folks re: the neice. She's in the best place, everyone has been impressed with the quality of the care she's receiving. She's currently learning to walk again, just a few steps exhausts her but she's on the right track and day by day her heart seems to get a little better. They're unsure how it'll cope without the device so a transplant is still viewed as the most likely outcome. RobEG Hope everything is OK with your little one and she's back home soon. Just an update on this, she has had a heart transplant a few weeks ago! Extremely lucky to get one so soon, came all the way from Germany. Everything going well so far, they think she could be home by the 8th May.

My boy started his SATs today. Poor kid has been really worried about it. He generally does well academically but tends to get in his own head and put a lot of pressure on himself. Seems like a lot of unnecessary pressure to put on 10/11 year olds

Entirely unnecessary. Especially as secondary schools pay virtually no attention to the results.
My eldest had another run in with a lad in his tutor group. They've had a running spat with name calling for a while and culminated in the other lad grabbing him from behind whilst he was still seated and repeatedly punching him in the face. He's really shaken up, obviously, and is going to have a cracking bruise it two tomorrow (his 13th birthday!). We've reported it to the police and have waded in at the school. Not on at all. No chance the school would report it, not that I think anything will come of it. More the principle
