Weirdly, she woke up feeling ok this morning, but says her arms and head hurt still. Taking her to the docs just in case.

She has a chest infection, which is better than the other alternatives. Unfortunately we can’t get antibiotics anywhere

After avoiding most of the bugs going around my daughter finally succumbed last night. Vomited in the middle of the night (after multiple wake-ups complaining of a sore tummy) and projectile vomit about an hour ago.
We were all set to have a get together today for her friends and their parents with loads of nibbles and mulled wine, so that's been scuppered (at least we won't go hungry).
Hopefully we don't get whatever bug she's carrying this close to Christmas, we're hosting the family dinner this year (8 of us in total) and that's already touch and go due to COVID (hopefully they'll be negative in the next day or so). I know this time of year is always rife with bugs, but this year seems especially bad (loads of her schoolmates were I'll last week).

Just keep washing your hands until they are red raw! This year definitely seems worse than any other one since I had my first 10 years ago. Half the primary and secondary schools have been off at a time with various things. Definitely needs a Christmas firebreak!

Glad you got some antibiotics Rob. Miserable a few days before Christmas but they work quickly, so hopefully they'll feel better for the big day.

So the plan for today was to visit my relatives in Croydon for an unofficial second Christmas. Ms Shark had some nasty discharge (boik) and cramps this morning but we carried on regardless. It wasn’t until we were literally about to sit down to dinner that she went to the bathroom and a clot fell out, causing her to bleed heavily. Paramedics came, she was rushed to hospital, slightly awkward 30 minutes in a waiting room with some hyper bored kids, and as soon as she got a bed she absolutely gushed blood and was rushed straight into the labour ward.
Thirty minutes and a c-section later, Baby Shark arrived. Poor lad was six weeks early and has respiratory complications due to being premature and will be in the NICU for two weeks probably, but the team at Croydon University Hospital are on it and have just been amazing. (Fun Fact - we’re just down the road from the Peep Show flat.)
So very unexpected way to end 2022. Feeling emotionally dazed and barely know what my next steps are. But baby is here and clearly he’s full of surprises.

Oh shit, thinking of you all man. What a way to end the year!
Here’s hoping Mrs and baby Shark have the best recoveries possible.
And get yourself some chips, sounds like you deserve them.

Congrats mate! I know that feeling well, both my kids were prem (8 and 4 weeks, spent 4 and 2 weeks in NICU respectively. The eldest also had respiratory issues early on, not fun). My advice is not to worry about machines that go ping, the nurses are on it, take time for yourself - it's tempting to want to spend every minute alongside their incubator but they don't know and you'll be better use to them if fully rested when they come home. So even if you step away for 30 mins, that will help. Enjoy, it's a different experience to most, but definitely memorable!

Never mind the monitors, don’t get all hung up on the detail of the stats. Don’t focus on it all. And yeah the beeps are fucking annoying. My girl was in NICU and PICU and it’s absolutely the best place for them. Get a good book in for when you’re sitting with her and make sure to get away often. Word of warning - hospital cafes are terrible for piling the weight on in comfort eating. I did it and am still trying to thin down 5 years later! Congratulations!

My 10 year old has turned into a teenager overnight.
He got a phone for Christmas and has been in WhatsApp chats and video calls with his mates ever since. Now they are in group calls while playing Fortnite all day. Letting it go a bit since it’s Christmas week, but going to have to clamp down it in the new year.
I’m trying to imagine having access to that at his age.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I was there when the little lad was being put in the box and the monitors and tubes and noises really freaked me out. Honestly can’t praise the team there enough though. Think I was just a wreck with all the thoughts running through my head.
We don’t have his baby seat; I never finished any of those baby books; I can’t remember anything from the NCT class; They just said he’s got a small chin - does that mean he’s a freak baby?; I promised my brother we’d play Shredder’s Revenge on Switch this week, will he be disappointed?

I never read any baby books or attended any NCT classes (had to google that) and neither did Mrs Mercury both my kids are freaks
All I would add is take lots of photos, even (in fact maybe more importantly) the mundane stuff, that trip to Sainsburys or when he smashes his nose on the scooter handlebars or whatnot.

When mine came out all fucked up I remember very clearly being worried for her older brother and how he would be. Turns out he was the strongest one and got us through a lot of problems.
That’s not to say we didn’t have to protect him but try not to worry about the kids. Enough stress as it is.
And try not to fall in love with the hot nurse ok

And try not to fall in love with the hot nurse ok Haha there's always one! Our hot one was the post-natal midwife, that said I've never forgiven her for pulling down the curtains (Ooer) accidentally and breaking the mechanism when she didn't realise they were pull cord ones.

Yeah my first had heart surgery at 3 days old. I remember afterwards just staring at all the readings and panicking whenever they fluctuated. The nurses were amazing though. It’s hard but try not to stress yourself too much about it.
