I don’t really see the need to upgrade this time around. All the stuttering and bad MSFS VR performance is cpu related. Even the PS5Pro is still going to suck at ray tracing compared to nvidia cards so I don’t see that changing in the next two or three years.

Seeming like the chip series is more of a foundation one where they just reign in their rampant power requirements as the benefit over last gen and then add the sparkles for the next one ... ?!
Naming scheme is daft though. They could've gone 290, 270, 250 etc but nope, take 5 off all those numbers. Also why start at 200 and not 100?
Not for me I don't think.

I see possible price leaks of 5000 series doing the rounds. I actually wouldn't be surprised if they were true. 2000-2500 dollars for 32gb 5090 1200-1500 dollars for 16gb 5080 600-700 dollars for 12gb 5070 Oh and 5070 is supposedly very similar to a 4070ti in rasterisation but slightly better ray tracing. also this. It's going to be one hell of a leap for me when I get around to building a new machine next year.
Leaping from a 1080 to a 5090 will be an experience.

results are trickling in and its seeming like intels new core ultra chips are underwhelming at best.

Ordered my new motherboard. Finally settled on ASRock B650E Taichi Lite.
Nice all black board with understated art and a small bit of RGB tucked away.

Unsurprising. Intel probably makes most of their sales on the OEM market anyway, but Arrow Lake in particular seems like something the desktop and enthusiasts market would not care about at all. Lunar Lake at least could be a sensible development for laptops, but a desktop version of that probably isn't on anybody's priority list.

The steady decline of Intel has been fascinating to watch. So many unforced errors, the hubris and a near total brain drain. I would love a deepdive on how they let AMD get the drop on them after failing for so long.

I imagine this is directly aimed at current Intel users looking to shift. I can't see much people apart from streamers looking to move from a 7800X3D, but Intel users currently on a 12th gen or the borked later gens, totally.

Or those intel diehards considering a move to the new core ultra product though I have to assume that is a minority.
If I was on 7800 I wouldn't consider changing but I'm on AM4 and my mate is having my old bits (minus cooler, GPU and storage)

At this point I don't know how you could be a diehard Intel fan for what is objectively a worse product and their shenanigans with the 13th and 14th gens.

Yeah, I'll be swapping out my i7 for either the 78- or 9800X3D early next year (most likely the former, depending on pricing at the time).

Nice. Very positive from Digital Foundry too. Won't be rushing to get one tomorrow, but likely will look to get one early next year.

Userbenchmark seems to have changed their criteria again so that it comes out behind Intel chips, despite clearly being superior. Bloody joke of a site.

There’s rumours about there being an X3D version of the next Threadripper. Which will be interesting.

Anyone got any recommendations for decent U.K. PC parts sites. And any to avoid as well?

X201 I've successfully ordered from Scan, CCL, Box, Amazon, eBuyer (long past) & OCUK and never had issues with any apart from Amazon so can't comment to their customer service post sale. Amazon sent an empty nvme box but they replaced it promptly. With any I would just flit between whichever is cheapest for whatever I'm after. Recently used neocomputers as well and their free delivery turned up a week earlier than promised

I use them all and they have mostly all been fine. Only real bad experience I can think of was with Box. I had a 4080 from them that never turned up, when I queried it they said DPD must have lost it. Possibly true, but as the price was listed as only £800 when the going rate was £1200, I suspect they cocked up on the pricing and they made sure it wasn't available (or people snapped them up and there was an error in their stock tracking). It wasn't really that bad and I did get a £50 voucher out of them, but I was put off by them trying to blame someone else.
One thing I would say is that when you are buying multiple parts, there is a reasonable chance of something being faulty or needing to go back. Amazon is by far the easiest to get replacements out of. I don't blame other companies and I fully appreciate that Amazon can only do it because they have so much money that they don't give a shit whether you are trying scam them, but it does make life a lot easier when you aren't having to go through weeks of going through a replacement process.

Yeah, I've tried them all at various points without any issues. Do Overcockers still do that free delivery only for regular forum members? Think I'd rather pay the shipping cost, thanks!
Amazon are definitely the kings for returns. Returned a processor because I lost the silicon lottery and it ran a bit hotter than I expected once. Anywhere else and I'd have probably sucked it up and just lived with it.

Thanks chaps, its been ages since I built one - haven't needed to as this one does me fine, but Windows 11 EoL/TPM and all that has forced my hand. But it needed doing anyway.
I think I used CCL to build this one. I've had the Amazon empty box routine last Christmas - Doing a favour for my aunt who wanted a new iPad for my uncle.
Think I might start collecting parts seeing as AMD is selling out like free food.
