I saw mudhoney play a few times from 1990 -1994, they weren’t grunge they were punk through and through. Also probably the only decent punk band I’ve listened to. The sex pistols, dead Kennedy’s, stooges and ramones were all pure shite. And don’t get me onto all that 90s new punk like green day, music for kids that had no music taste.. Ooft, say what you will of the rest but I'll fight you outside right now if you slag off my Ramones. 😂sorry, but I can’t stand them, never got the love they have

If we're talking Bad Religion then Empire Strikes First and New Maps of Hell are my favs. What's everyone's thoughts on Pennywise? I’m a fan of Pennywise. About Time is their definitive album for me Epitaph really did have an incredible roster in the mid 90’s. Pennywise, Rancid, Offspring, NOFX, Descendents to name a few.

Also black flag were shite too, seen them live, fucking awful. However saw Rollins on his own in the early 90s and he was great.
I am a massive sonic youth fan though so I’m probably not the right audience

I never got into the Ramones, and always struggled with The Stooges after having my oh-so-cool poseur flatmate listened to them on repeat for what seemed like an entire year. Dead Kennedys are fucking top though.
The vast majority of good punk is hardcore IMO.
Frankly it sounds like you need to dig a little deeper, Clem. What do you think of Minutemen, Black Flag, Hüsker Du, Dag Nasty, Fucked Up, Career Suicide, Propaghandi? Or something a little bit harder: Rorschach, Born Against, Dropdead, His Hero is Gone etc.
There was loads of good punk and hardcore in the '90s beyond the pop punk scene, and in it for that matter.

And I always preferred Pennywise to Bad Religion, but TBH I've not given a lot of BR's stuff a listen for years.
Any fans of Gang Green or the FU's?

To be honest I'm actually a fan of the CJ-era of the Ramones more than their early stuff these days which I don't really listen to anymore. Dee Dee was still writing for them and although it's more pop than punk (to be fair, this is a band that was inspired by the Bay City Rollers remember), I don't think a better song than Poison Heart has ever been written. It's one of my bloody funeral songs dammit.

Another blast from the past. This album was so full of vitriol there was practically spittle flying out of my Sony Walkman. Saw these guys live 3 times back in the mists of time and Casey Chaos (apt moniker if ever there was one) always managed to completely fuck himself up as he threw himself around the place. Used to be a fairly big fan of Amen. No idea what happened to Casey Chaos. I don't think Amen were all that big in the US but they had a decent UK following. Chaos was involved in Daron Malakian's Scars on Broadway protect briefly, and he did a black metal / punk crossover album with members of Emperor, Zyklon and Turbonegro but he just seemed to fade away very quickly.

drhickman1983 Ah yes I remember the black metal thing. Even that wasn't around for long. It's funny as at one point he was never out the rock and metal mags and then pop, he vanished.

Never heard of Idles before but I rather like that. Might check out their other stuff. You won't regret it. 'JOY as an act of Resistance' is a brilliant record

I think my favourite punk band might be The Damned though. Obviously Damned Damned Damned is a punk milestone, but they really got into their stride once Captain Sensible moved onto guitar and some of his slightly more psychedelic influences seeped in. Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries were amazing albums.
Love their aesthetic too in that era. Vanian was a very early goth, Sensible was just weird, Algy Ward (only around for Machine Gun Etiquette) was had a more typical punk look, then Rat Scabies just looked like an angry pub landlord.
Love this performance, even though it's a bit shambolic it's amazing.

They can fuck off with their latest ticket prices though, regardless of Scabies' return. My previous job was in the Arndale Tower in Manchester. One day I left work and popped into HMV and wondered why there were so many goths in the place. Turns out they were signing their latest album just for the price of the CD itself. Only CD I still own. Captain was really chatty. Don't think Vanian wanted to be there.

I think it's the return of Scabies and James that's "justified" the daft ticket price.
Interestingly there's a link between The Damned and Casey Chaos - Scabies, James and Chaos performed "Damned Damned Damned" in its entirety for the 30th anniversary. I'm pretty sure that happened and wasn't just a fever dream, but it's remarkably hard to find any footage of it.

I think his various hired guns ditched him when they found out he'd been taking most of the money the band made to keep it going, while sitting on a ton of pro-skateboarding money and a trust fund. Chaos indeed.

Apparently they also had Mani on bass. Quite the eclectic lineup.

Actually I just remembered this page on the BFI website, a few free films from the early 80s, The Destructors one is top (especially if you are a fan of Gizz Butt who played guitar live for The Prodigy) player.bfi.org.uk/free/collection/punk

Gizz taught guitar at my school! Haha, brilliant. I know a lot of old punks from where I live who were into The Destructors so I'm going to send them links to that video as they're probably in it, or know people who are.

A couple of guys from Snot were on the first Amen album I think.
And yeah, I don't dispute that he was probably a massive twat. Great front man though.

I can't keep up with all this, but the Damned's Black Album is amazing.
I suspect my tastes intersect with Mr Lizard's hardcore ones, too.

Agree totally with The Damned's Black Album being amazing.
And even when I liked Amen (still do, I guess) I suspected Casey Chaos was an awful person.
