Is that the PS5 version, Jambo? I never encountered anything like that with the PS4 version on the Pro.
But yeah, Valhalla is booty. Honestly found Tsushima a little boring as well, but at the very least it was a cut above Valhalla.

After picking this up yesterday to have a little go, I'm now 6 hours in and hooked so hard.
Talked a embattled old couple in a shack in the woods who mentioned something about Heavenly Strike which peaked my interest something fierce.
Dropped everything and made my way across the land just to see what it was and it was indeed some combat move. The boss fight was pretty fuckin epic too.
I've just finished up steamrolling through Azimo Bay, that got my leader count up and just unlocked wind stance. Typhoon kick is ace

Loving Lady Masako's tale, it's more 8nteresting that Ishikawa's. I'm not sure if I should have hung around the starting area a bit longer before heading off because I've just returned and got a new bow ... and its smashing. Ive been stealthin into camps to get my stab on but it shamed me with a cutscene about honour. Am I supposed to walk up to the front gate like 10 men or sneak in and clear them out? Does it matter? Side note, I got a trophy for ejecting an enemy over a cliff using typhoon kick . How I laughed.

I'd say play it as you like in terms of stealth vs all out attack. I found my play style varied greatly as I gained new skills or add-ons, but some locations suit one approach ahead of the other.
It's definitely worth exploring the map, but for the start I would say just go where you like. The more tales you open up, the more options you will have, with different rewards for completing different objectives - these are shown on the markers on the map.
Once I had unlocked the 2nd section of the map, I did go back and complete everything I could find in the 1st (mainly as I didn't want to rush through it all). This allowed me to upgrade considerably which may have made me slightly overpowered for some of the encounters in that 2nd section, but again made me switch my style up even more.
It's very well balanced though, and it probably doesn't matter which way you approach it.

Thanks. Im definitely going towards getting OP, half bow is fully upgraded already and sword is l4 or 5.
Found a charm fairy early that gives me a little extra for my collectables. Very handy.
What I realised when playing yesterday is that the ghost weapons can be unlocked in any order after you have the kunai. As soon as I realised this I jumped on the distraction item.

I wish the PS5 Director's Cut upgrade from PS4 vanilla version would come down in price... The PS4/PS5 game has been on sale several times, but never the upgrade and to be honest I don't want to pay that much for it
On the other hand, I can play the original, which I already own, but what's the point in that...

It's on the PS plus thing.

The rule of thumb for me is: have I paid full price for a game since the PS5 launched? If the answer is "yes", it's on PS+ now.

Started playing through this on PS5 to try out my new TV as much as anything. Does look lovely at times.
The combat is excellent, and I'm really enjoying just striding into camps and destroying 20 dudes in increasingly flamboyant ways.
The first 20hrs were great but open world fatigue has firmly started to set in now. Why do developers shove all the detritus in. Haikus? 49 fox shrines? I'm in act 2 and have already upgraded most stuff to max and the map is flooded with icons. The story is good but has lost its sense of urgency somewhat.
I've reached the 'I'll just clear that bit of the map whilst listening to a podcast' stage and am almost at the 'questioning whether I'm actually enjoying it or just compulsively removing map icons to increase meaningless stats' stage.
Does it get any better or more varied? Is the extra dlc Island worth it? Trying to gauge whether it's worth another 20-30hr.
It's better disguised then some but it's basically assassin's creed, Spiderman, batman, horizon, days gone etc etc etc isn't it?
I really hope this gen we can have open world games with actual new ideas not just reskins. I love open worlds to explore but I'm so bored of about 80% of the systems developers choose to fill then with.

It's more of the same TBH. The island does have a couple of different tasks/moves but it's not revolutionary.

If you are tiring of the open world, I'd just stick to the main story missions to finish it off as there are some great locations and battles in the final act.
You don't need to do all the side quests to level up (and sounds like you are already well on the way), I was overpowered by the end as had done nearly all side missions as I was loving it and wanted to stretch the playtime out.

I'm about the same with side stuff now. They seemed to cram loads of it in the first part of the island so now I'm quite OP. I might to pootle on through just doing the main stuff until I hit a wall.
Can you return to the world and do side missions after completion? That might be the way to go...

Thanks to advice on here I've focused on the main story for last five or so hours. Those missions are really good fun. The character side quests are a mixed bag, have binned a couple of them off. Probably won't bother with the extra Island either. Ready to finish it now and play something more innovative.

Got to about the same place tbh. Need to get back to it as I do like the combat and the setting/location but was finding all the side missions quite wearing.

It reminds me quite a bit of Horizon ZD. It's a huge beautiful world with a dire lack of interesting stuff to find. Great combat, decent plot.
Not enjoying Jin's story quite as much as Aloy's (I loved the central mystery in HZD). But I do want to see the end which is reasonably rare for me these days.

Just finished it. Good ending worth seeing if you have any investment in the story.
You can seemingly keep playing post credits and finish whatever you've missed.
It's a decent video game, but a mediocre open world game. I'm quite glad they did make it open world as just travelling around gave everything context and an excellent sense of place.
The core story missions are mostly very good and well placed, but the open world boring task bloat is one of the worst I've come across.
Admittedly I'm one of those people that has that inherent urge to try and do everything, but that approach is an absolute chore here.
I more or less cleared Act 1 entirely (explored the whole map and did every quest) before moving to Act 2 and when it became clear there was even more of almost exactly the same as stuff in the expanded map, that's when the fatigue crept in.
Act2 I probably did 50% ish of what was on offer and ignored most standard side quests.
Act3 I finished the two characters quests that I vaguely cared about, did a couple of big Mongol camps just to get gold to upgrade my swords to max and then just mainlined the story missions.
With that approach I finished with all but one (I think) armour set, all weapons, and had upgraded everything all gear to max I also had all the techniques maxed out (except guiding winds and a couple of stealth ones that I wasn't using). I even had about 6 technique points left over as was saving some in case I suddenly got a new skill unlocked that I actually wanted. I had a ludicrous amount of charms and lost interest in even swapping them around in Act3.
All of which is to say the volume of quests and collectables and mongol camps are ridiculously disproportionate. There are far more than give any sort of benefit. It's more egregious than most open world games I've played and I'm slightly annoyed at time I wasted doing tasks I wasn't even particularly enjoying for minimal rewards.
The final duels were fairly tough, took a few goes so I think a fully upgraded sword and one decent armour set is a must, but there's no need to do more than that.
Probably a 7/10 for me in the end but there are parts that were genuinely great. If it had cut the generic bloat by 2/3rds and had a bit more variety it could have been a 9.

I lost my save for it going from PS4 to ps5 so had to replay a lot of the game to get to the dlc. I'm not sure it's worth another buy as there is a lot of busy work in the game. If you have an existing save and haven't played the dlc get that as it's well worth it.

It's a very good game and just a lovely setting with a decent story.
I would highly recommend putting it up to hard for a first play through. It's not too tough but it adds a bit more jeapardy to it all.
Much more enjoyable than any ass creed that I've played. I find the combat more enjoyable for a start.

Almost as if they listened to us!
Ghost of Tsushima follow-up will have a less repetitive open world

I don't think the repetitive stuff was particular egregious with GoT, but yeah generally I would like fewer repetitive tasks in my open world games and focus on making what is in there stronger ratter than a tick box exercise.

Oh it was, it the same padding that all of these games get. Just find interesting shit to put in the world, Elden ring showed that you have have to put in meaningless tasks to make a world interesting. I honestly think GOT would have been better without it.

There was busy work that could have been scaled back a bit but I thoroughly loved my time with it, it was my choice of 2020 GOTY over TLoU2. Having a new character in a new time period in the sequel is probably just as well as the bullshit ways some sequels depower returning characters is just a bit shit. Going from doing this to being in trouble again against regular foes as Jin would be rubbish. Still annoyed at the one Mongol that runs off. I pretty much played the game on hard in Traveller's Attire just so I wouldn't miss any collectables.
