I think it’s actually worse than five (unless it blows my tits off in what I assume are the few remaining hours of the game).
It has sacrificed a lot for the open world map and I don’t think it was worth it. Or at least it might have been if the missions were a bit more inspiring than ‘find a switch in a metal room’.

Doubt the single player will ever be really good again because 343 aren't very good at making SP games. They've proven that conclusively. I'm enjoying Infinite because the one thing they have absolutely nailed is the feel of combat and (so far) ditched the robots. Combined with it being an imitation of Halo 1, it's at least better than 4 or 5. Since opening up, it's had no narrative drive or excitement, can't remember hearing any of that iconic music but it feels great moment to moment.
I think this is as good as it's going to get under 343. The terrible boss fights show they have no finesse whatsoever but can manage a decent cover version. Glad they've settled on just being that after 5 personally.

If I were to compare the campaign alone, then I'd say Halo 4 was better. For all its flaws, it did feel more varied and generally more feature-rich than Infinite. The Prometheans were little more than Covenant on steroids, but it did help things feel a little fresher.
That said, Infinite is still better than 5. Even if the boss fights were almost as bad as the damn Wardens.

I think the Prometheans were fucking awful enemies to fight. A bit like the Flood.

Didn't some earlier halo have (not great?) boss fights? I personally never really minded the warden battles in 5... I am only on to second island so I might just not be as jaded yet, but I am looking forward to more of what I have seen and then waiting for co-op / DLC

Anyway, yes the combat is brilliant, the environment is disappointingly repetitive and the story is... something. Regardless the multiplayer is fucking brilliant.

I feel like 343 nailed the brief. Give me Halo CE if it was 20 years later.
You may not like the brief, but it's hard to look at Infinite and pick it apart for unashamedly being exactly what it is.
I'll never get boss fights in FPS games though, they'll only ever be annoying bullet sponges and who has time for that?

I’m still having a brilliant time, and the game tells me I’m over halfway through. The combat continues to be absolutely superb. The sandbox lets me approach encounters in multiple ways and they all play out differently, and clearing objectives remains satisfying. I even like the plot (so far).
I think 343 have done a great job and should be rightly proud.

I think the Prometheans were fucking awful enemies to fight. A bit like the Flood. I didn't mind fighting Prometheans. They required a somewhat different approach to the Covenant, but in the end most weapons worked against them - they were certainly better than the cheap and mindless hordes of Flood, which you absolutely needed a shotgun to kill. I always hated the Flood with rocket launchers. Worst enemies in the series. Yes, worse than Jackal snipers. Didn't some earlier halo have (not great?) boss fights? I personally never really minded the warden battles in 5... I am only on to second island so I might just not be as jaded yet, but I am looking forward to more of what I have seen and then waiting for co-op / DLC Yeah, Halo 2 had a few boss fights. They were pretty bad. There's a reason bosses didn't return for a long time.

I'm really enjoying it, though I'm only just past the tower. Dare I say it, I think I like the moment-to-moment combat more than Returnal's (which is mostly because I'm better at this).

The flood werent amazing enemies to fight but they were thematically good enemies.
They had clearly defined goals (eat everything), clearly defined motivations (eat everything) and they were a clever juxtaposition of a mindless, unreasonable force set against the techno wizardry of the covenant and, to a lesser extent, the humans. They allowed the story to be a lot more than humans vs aliens.
Every other enemy introduced since then has not, which is why they all suck. The Didact was probably the best stab, maybe? 'I just woke up and you fuckers are in charge?'. I dunno.

I've got this downloaded but just haven't been able to bring myself to start it yet. Never been much of a fan of the 343 games; they just don't seem to be able to ever reach the same heights as Bungie. Then again, I haven't actually finished a Halo game since Halo 2, so maybe I'm just not into them enough? The gunplay has always been pretty good, but it always seems to become a bit of a slog by the halfway point. Might give this one a shot over the weekend, but from what I'm reading here I'll probably have uninstalled it by Sunday night

I can't imagine caring about the enemies' motivation tbh.

Why can't we talk to the demons in Doom instead of just shooting them?

I quite like the Flood for the reasons you describe, they fit the (first) game pretty well and while there weren't as fun to fight against as the covenant by a long shot, they added an interesting dynamic. Though, after just doing a replay I remembered Guilty Spark bigging up their intelligence -"Its parasitic nature belies the Flood's intelligence". I agree the Prometheans were a rubbish enemy. Robot-esque things always feel pretty soulless in games I think.

I can't imagine caring about the enemies' motivation tbh. Well, the story is part of what makes a good game great, right? Its the reason everyone seems lukewarm on this Halo despite loving everything about the way it plays.

Personally I haven't cared about a Halo story since the first one (and even then not that much). Though Reach was pretty cool.

I've always enjoyed the settings of Halo games, the pretty worlds, stirring music etc. Never needed to understand more about the actual plot than "kill the things trying to kill you", but horses for courses I guess.
This does lack the stirring music so far it seems, I must say.

Its the reason everyone seems lukewarm on this Halo despite loving everything about the way it plays. Not always, as in the case of Doom 2016 and how some people didn't like that Doom Eternal leaned into a story, but for something like Halo with all its lore a good, comprehensible story feels like a necessity.

The flood gain intelligence as they grow. Eg the Gravemind. They can grow and grow, taking over planets, solar systems, etc. That is why they were such a threat and hence the rings.
Just mindless zombies don't really necessitate wiping out all life!

From a pure gameplay perspective I actually think this is the best Halo I’ve played. It reminds me of the good bits from Halo 3, expanded out and improved.
Story wise, I’ve honestly not had a clue what is going on since Halo 2. The whole thing is a mess. What Infinite is lacking though (so far at least) are some stand out designed story missions, like the beach fight through to the spaceport in Reach for instance.
All in all I think it’s pretty great so far, but is lacking some needed direction.

I think that sums up my feelings as well. My favourite is probably Halo 3, with a bit of ODST atmos thrown in for good measure, and this definitely expands on that very well.

All done. Good stuff. The way the campaign was in some ways it felt under done like a team of five people designed it. However the combat sandbox was the best it has ever been so I loved it.

The story in Halo games has always been incomprehensible horseshit since the first one, which stuck to "you've landed on a weird ring".
Good narrative, characters etc. *can* be part of what makes a game great but they never have been in Halo.
