It could work, with a bit of metroidvania, backtracking via unlocked shortcuts, opening up new areas of the facility beneath, that could erupt and reshape some gameplay up top, and open new pathways to new locations. And then the Flood are freed and the whole ring could be redressed, a la Spider-Man 2.
That’s obviously in thinking of a Halo rebootimagining, but it could’ve worked within Infinite too. That whole project was just a mess.

I think the idea that everything has to be open world to maximise the feeling of vfm has fucked over the industry to a massive degree.

Oh, for sure. I’m not arguing it should be open world, just that it could work with some smart level design.

Oh, for sure. I’m not arguing it should be open world, just that it could work with some smart level design. Yeah I can agree with that. I think what annoyed me more was that initial reveal trailer with different biomes, endemic life and obviously what we got. It really took me out of the game getting into a Scorpion and finding myself getting stuck hitting a tree.

I loved the open world in Infinite. It blew me away. The addition of the grappling hook was tremendous, I really felt it brough back some of the playful physics of earlier Halo games. Yeah, I'll warrant that after ten hours it was repetitive. But my initial reaction was one of absolute joy, and I still go back to it fairly regularly just because the traversal and the encounters with the Banished are so fun and engaging.
Also, it's unquestionably a fair criticism that what we got was not all we wanted. Just one biome feels miserly in the 2020s, even if I know it must be a hell of a lot of work to make these things. I also agree that open world shouldn't be the standard; it doesn't work for everything. But I think it can - it could - work really well for Halo. Infinite had the basics right, it just needed finessing IMO.

I thought infinite's campaign was good fun for the most part. Don't get me wrong the gunplay was great but i would struggle to remember a specific mission like i could with 1,2 and 3. Which is the problem with the 343 games, no one really speaks about any memorable missions they've made. That's just because Halo 1 is the same mission repeated 100 times with slight variations in enemy placement Halo Infinite looked fun, but I didn't have a platform I could run it on. I know it's a total pipe dream, but if they were going to make the multiplayer free, I wish they'd made it properly cross platform. Unreal would enable that... hey, I can dream!

For all the negatives from 343, they never made a level as bad as The Library.

Quite a bit of Halo is going through the same 3 or 4 rooms over and over again. There's definitely scope for a ground up remake

Respawn could make a good Halo level, Titanfall 2 had a couple memorable ones. Jedi Survivor even did the quasi open world thing rather well.

Senior Animator (Will Waltz) who used to work at 343i, thoughts on "new" management at Halo Studios

Interesting saying those who tried to move to unreal before infinite were let go
I don't think things will change with the change of management and its rebranding. I've worked for companies that rebrand and managers change, its still the same company at the core (also the halo studios logo is shit)

I dunno I'm not inclined to trust the scribing of someone who goes on LinkedIn to absolutely trash their former employer and directly name people. If you look at more of his posts they're insanely contradictory. I'm in no doubt development was in disarray that's almost on the record but yeah this just comes across as bitterness.

The thing is that quite often it doesn’t take Mystic Meg to say ‘this thing is shit, we need to move to the new thing’, I say it pretty much daily about our web proxy.
More often than not you’re either chasing a sunk cost, the timing isn’t right or someone who gets paid a lot more than you has their balls on the line to make the first thing work, so if you keep belligerently pointing that out, at some point you’re going to get told to fuck off.

Hopefully some channel on YT that does good "what happened" will come out with the full story
Sometimes the company or high ups fully believes the product is fine and people are moaning at nothing, maybe the high ups at the studio knew the slipstream engine was too much tech debt but hoped it would come together at the end? (as lot of studios tend to do).
Bethesda high ups know this about their shit game engine but give zero fucks

I'll say one thing about the changes, whoever came up with that new company logo should be fired immediately.
