It's fun. The open world is pointless and pants. Combat loop is lovely though and heroic is nicely challenging so far. Killed three bosses and cleared a few out posts so far today.

Outside of its context as a game, it runs quite a high risk of just being a slightly fash, military wank fantasy, though. Starship troopers without the fun.

Done a lot of progress today... just got past the twin Brutes boss. I'm already tired of the open world, so I'll keep playing through the story missions. I've upgraded the shield, grapple and radar to the maximum, and I'm pretty sure that's all I need. Still haven't even used the last two powerups. No need to go for the remaining upgrade points.
The mission difficulty continues to be just fine, while the bosses continue to be a pain. Hunters can be easy or hard, depending on where you find them (ie. how many throwable barrels and obstacles are around). Luckily, the ones I've met so far were nowhere as difficult as the two guarding the skull.

On a side note, I'm gonna need a primer on what the hell is going on. I haven't played Halo Wars 2, but to be honest, I don't even remember what happened in Halo 5.
Who are the Banished? Who's this Atriox guy? What happened to those Covenant who followed the bad guys in 4 and 5, whose name I can't be bothered to recall? And how much time is supposed to have passed between 5 and Infinite?
I keep thinking the game will eventally answer my questions, but that's starting to look unlikely. And then again, I don't really care.

I was thinking this today. I can't remember what happened at the end of 5 as I hated it and blocked it from my mind. So I've no idea what this battle was at the start of the game where chief gets let go. No idea what's going on.

I didn't play either of the Wars games so fair game if they're from those, but I just assumed these were new villains created for this game.

There is a huge gap between the two stories. H5 basically finished with cortana looking really dangerous and chief being saved.

No you didn't, I only completed the H5 campaign earlier this week and the jump is huge.

It does fill in the gaps in the final missions, you haven’t missed anything.

Cortana formed up voltron and took off to her home planet because her people needed her.
At least I think that’s what happened.

I love it so far. Have moved into the open world, cleared two FOBs, rescued a few squads and cleared out some sort of fuel station.
It does have the slightest hint of Far Cry but I quite like some Far Cry games...but it's a lot more streamlined.
More importantly the environment feels like the ring on the first Halo. It really does feel like a spiritual successor to me.
Unlocked the first Warthog variant. Really chunky and fun to drive.

Played some last night, it was fun and felt like Halo!
The brutes are my least favourite enemies though, the basic grunt ones at least do pretty much fuck all. Might be rose tinted specs but the elites on Halo 1 were more exciting to fight than these guys...

Met any of the different ones yet? The basic grunt ones do hurt you if you are close to them but aren't any trouble at range.

So a lot of the initial difficulty is mitigated if you pile all of your initial Spartan points into shield. You can max it out relatively quickly which puts it back to pretty much previous halo levels. It's a bit of a dumb way to offer progression, tbh.

Looks like they scraped a lot of stuff in favour of the Halo Wars 2 bad guys.
I expected a several days earlier message to appear after the intro

Out of all the plot lines they just abandoned and then ignored, I think H4 was the best.

You can max it out relatively quickly which puts it back to pretty much previous halo levels. It's a bit of a dumb way to offer progression, tbh. First thing I did. On legendary, in the beginning your shield lasts fuck all against even basic enemies. Once upgraded, it's now a lot more like the old games. Possibly even a tad easier: Jackal snipers give you some time to react and you can see their laser sights, and Elites are just a little bit dumber than usual, enough for them to not feel like much of a threat anymore. Enemies in general are much less likely to try and chase you as well (the few that do, are most annoying). I'm not done yet, but I must be getting close enough to the end, and so far I'd say Reach was harder. Not counting the bosses of course. I've completed all the FOBs and outposts, and they didn't really get any harder with time. That's a bit of a problem with the game's open world imo: there isn't a real feel of progression, you are always doing the same things. It's also missing the big setpieces from the older games. It all feels like very basic Halo. That's not necessarily a bad thing, mind (I hated some of the gimmicky vehicle sections from Reach and 4). But again, it does make the open world feel even more like padding. They totally nailed the gunplay this time, though. Best in the series.

Enjoying this still. Just did the mission where you first meet the new enemies. Upgraded shield to full and grapple second to last. Now I'll work on the dodge thrusters.
No idea what they have been doing at 343 for so many years though. Extremely basic and generic open world with levels inside that almost all look identical.

Gotta say, was a bit disappointed when the villain in the beginning there introduced himself as whatever his name was, and not Craig.

There's defintely a lot to "complain" about in the game, not least of which how unadventurous it is. But fuck me, barren as it is I'm *loving* the open world encounters. What you're carrying and the angle you approach from will drastically change the nature of every fight, and I'm loving it. Just beat what I think is the third boss (by the mining laser thing), and I'm still content that Heroic is the way for me. The bosses are a bit of a spike, but there's usually a fairly obvious strategy to the win. I rocked up, because I'm a fucking moron, with just a needler and an empty rifle. Did the fight using the needler to drop the shield, and then the Magic Grapple Punch of Zinthar repeatedly. Wrecked him. I get the feeling it isn't going to be the longest campaign, busy work aside, so I'm taking my time. Once they've actually finished the game in about six months time (co-op, forge, replayable missions, bugs) I can imagine the structure will lend itself well to DLC. Hopefully have something on the 12 month anniversary of the release.

I'm not really sure what's changed, but every time I try and launch Halo Infinite on PC - from the start menu shortcut, via the Xbox app, or even from within the Store - the game just launches the Gaming Services screen within the Microsoft Store app.
WTF.

Hah, if I click through to the reviews of "Gaming Services", helpful folk have expressed their frustration, described my situation, and what to do.

My PC Game Pass install is screwed. Eventually got multiplayer downloaded and working, but can't get the campaign installed. The Game Pass client is such absolute dogshit. Atrocious given the devs behind it...
Game is gud tho

Finished. A bit less than 18 hours, 58% done. Yes, I've played a lot these past four days.
I'm never doing this again. Missions generally let you coast along just fine, to the point that you think you've got it, then you get to a boss and die a million times. The final wave of the final boss in particular made me rage harder than any Halo game before, probably harder than the goddamn triple Warden fight. Good thing for randomly triggered checkpoints just at the right time to restore my faith in humanity and give me some reprieve.
Overall, Legendary difficult was actually pretty okay, forcing you to play smart but still giving you some room to feel badass, which is more than I can say about 5 or Reach (with the caveat that you need to those shield upgrades as soon as possible). But I hated the bossed. Really hated them. They are not smartly designed or fair, they are just shit. I don't think this game could be finished without at least the grapple cooldown upgrade, because so many of the bosses can only be survived if you use the grapple momentum to jump far ahead... as often as humanly possible.
Overall rating: fun but disappointing.

Never enjoyed playing any halo games on legendary. Think I beat 1,3 odst and reach on legendary and it was never fun. Heroic is where it's at. You're meant to be a super soldier and on legendary you have to play like a pussy and carefully clear each area and not go in hard.

Not gonna bother with the rest of the open world, but since I've finished all the FOBs and outposts, I guess I'll go back in later to kill the last few high value targets.

I feel like spider man with this grappling hook. Just on to the second island bit. Don't think I've enjoyed a halo game this much before.

Finished with the HVTs too. That's the game shelved then, at least the single player. Good thing they made it DLC, so I can keep the multiplayer while saving some space. By the way, I found it pretty ironic that the trailer made a big deal out of that Elite with the red sword, then you get to his boss fight and he's the easiest boss in the game. He's pretty much an HVT, except he doesn't even have an entourage to back him up.
