Really looking forward to playing this later, but blimey from a technical standpoint it really is a last-gen title that runs better on next-gen consoles.
Other than playing a bit of Halo 4 and ODST (which I didn't love) when I got my Series X earlier in the year, this'll be the first Halo I've played since Reach, and the Halo 1 nostalgia vibes are looking strong...
Just got to try and convince my old housemate of the time to get an Xbox and re-live that co-op experience!

I've just given up on the PC version. Couldn't seem to find a way to download the campaign without the game running, and given how nicely it plays on a controller plus some of the glaring issues with the PC version highlighted in the DF article I just said fuck it and uninstalled this morning. Oh, I did Alt + Enter to run it windowed, then minimised and muted the window.

In fairness I was already in a bad mood and that pushed me over the edge.
Curious to see if a clean install actually grabs everything whenever I get around to it.

No worries. It's not obvious, and I've only learned that trick from Flight Simulator.

Minor combat gripe - the increasing number of grenade types can make it tricky to keep track of which one is active and select a different one mid-fight. Kind of preferred when it was just sticky/frag and one button would toggle between them.

So likely just needs to buy / borrow a controller.

But I don't see why it couldn't still be one button to cycle thru grenade types as was previous.

I felt the same at first, then I realised that the shock grenades in certain situations can really turn the tide of battle. It's just a matter of getting muscle memory for which grenade type you want to switch to. Once that's dialled in, it'll be just fine.

Apparently the Steam version of this runs a lot better than the windows store version...

Sooo, a wee horde of grunts & jackals in an open area are pretty efficient at taking me out, it seems.
Also, I loved the loot cave with suprise halo throw back!
I am barely out of the LZ, and there is so much stuff - weapons and ammo everywhere.

I've only played a few multiplayer games, but is the ground pound from Halo 5 no more? I loved that bloody thing.

What's the best way to take out the jackals shields? They seem harder than I remember.

Grapple it and a quick head shot.

I find a grapple shot will make them lower the shield briefly. Otherwise plasma weapons?

One shot to the hand, then dome is the way I've always gone about it. Tried numerous edits, but it doesn't seem to like that for some reason and will never add it under malek quote bit for some reason!

I would expect you to have fish fingers, beans and chips after doing that particular move.

Thanks muchly, I'll stick to plasma weapons I think. There's no chance I can do anything more skilled than that. In my hands, Master Chief is a great big lumbering buffoon who can barely shoot straight.

The grappling hook is the way to go man. Plus if you upgrade it you can both electric shock baddies and, later, do an awesome charged melee attack that deals splash damage.

I've barely used it tbh. I'll have a better sesh this evening and see if I can settle in to it. My only gripe so far, which has been sort of mentioned before I think is the grenade switching. I can't actually see which of the d-pad directions I need to press whilst bringing up the wee menu. But I'll get used to it. It's very impressive so far. Really punchy.

The UI is definitely not designed for small TVs (or those that sit relatively far away). I can hardly read/see some of the writing / button prompts at my normal (which is too far but can't get a bigger TV ) viewing distance.

The grapple is almost essential on playing higher difficulties it's solved that problem of being attacked by snipers while dealing with enemies close to you while also making you much more agile in getting the fuck out of Dodge.

Real sour start to this for me, fell down on the 'exciting' escape bit to get checkpointed on the lowest tiny platform resulting in an extremely tedious climb back up including multiple falls as the grapple didn't get me on some of the narrow ledges nicely.

Well I've just emerged into the open and what a glorious sight to see.
I'm playing on Series X and Heroic difficulty. I'm loving the AI, the way the banished flank you and keep you on your toes. I'm finding the combat genuinely exciting. The weapons / ammo balance is great not too much but enough to make you think about shots and tactics. The combat reminds me of the Half Life 2 Lighthouse level... it's that frantic pace combined with the music.
What I also like is when I step back away from the combat how quiet the environment is with the birds and stuff compared to the pitched battle you've just been in... really, really good. The music is just next level and really builds the tension.
Damn I love this game.
