After 5 and the reveal my expectations were really low... but it seems bloody good. Played an hour and a half. Feels incredible and the first mission was great.

I don't think the graphics seem quite as wowsers as 5 so far, but it might be the compromise for open world, or I might just be jaded.
However, have played the opening and a bit further before retiring it for the night and this is the best Halo has possibly ever felt.
It really does feel like the sandbox of the first classic three updated. I thought the grapple would cheese things but it's a really good edition.
I even sat through the entire choir song at the start it gave me the feels that much.
Love this.

Heroic seems spot on so far.
Murderised if you get too flashy or sloppy, but with just enough leeway you can still feel like a boss at times.

Very strong opening! Haven't got very far into the first mission, but it is gorgeous, and quite expansive. Previous games feel claustrophobic by memory.
Guns feel and sound thunderous. The pulse carbine is a beast!
Grunts don't last long, but one of them or a brute got me with a plasma grenade!
Grappleshot in campaign makes so much sense.

Finding this a bit dull, only played the first two games though. Should I catch up before hand?

Ah welcome back, Halo. Moment to moment combat is just superb. Totally agree here; the grapple is such a brilliant (and natural) addition that it has already become second nature. I’m on heroic too and it can be surprising how quickly you can die if you’re caught out. Especially humiliating when you’re behind cover praying for your shields to recharge, only to hear a brute shout “THAT’S RIGHT, RUN AND HIDE HUMAN!” hahaha. Time to grapple a dude and punch him in the face!
Also; I’ve been enjoying the mangler (brute shotgun type of gun, like the mauler from halo 3) in MP but good lord does it wreck banished at almost any range in the campaign!

I was missing the Halo CE hand cannon until I got to know the Mangler

Yeah, the mangler is great once you get used to the ridiculous bullet drop.

I find that most of the weapons are viable. The only ones I can't get on with are the Needler (which should be be more powerful and also needs some way of dealing with Jackal shields), and the more powerful weapons like Hydra and Ravager, which fire too slowly and never feel powerful enough to justify their limited ammo count. Anyway, has anyone managed to find this spartan core? It's the one nearest to where you first get dropped off by the Pelican. photos.app.goo.gl/yT9Za5oBRrP1kUNA7I'm scanning around the place but don't see anything. I don't wanna leave because enemies apparently respawn, and that would mean dealing with a pretty mean Brute officer again.

Heroic seems spot on so far. Murderised if you get too flashy or sloppy, but with just enough leeway you can still feel like a boss at times. I managed to get enough time on it to complete the first level/mission and this seems spot on. The only time I died was when I grappled a few pixels *above* the cannister I was aiming at and rappelled into them rather than dragging them towards me and ragdolled the other way like I'd been shot out of a cannon. So, yeah, watch out for that. Seems decent, though. Im sure its explained eventually but the disconnect between the end of 5 and the start of this is very jarring. I played enough of Halo Wars 2 to know whats going on but it does feel like Ive missed out on several games worth of story somewhere.

I agree on the story! Was also jarring that atriox throws you out the window in the opening scene and then confusingly isn't the big bad you see next.
I love the needler. I was working it as a combo, using it for fairly easily taking out elites and brutes, and then pulse rifle for jackals (SOOO many jackals...).
That first boss kind of handed me my ass a couple times, as I had really shite weapons at the checkpoint. I needled him in the end.

Had a blast this morning before I left and did the first mission then started the second. It looks and runs fantastically on the One X so can't imagine what it looks like on the Series X. So far so very Halo but the combat is incredibly satisfying. I am one who is also playing on normal and geting my arse kicked a little bit. It's quite a challenge.
I have no idea what's going on as never played 5 and didn't pay the slightest bit of attention to the story in any of the others.

Stuck half an hour in last night and a couple more this morning before going to work (in the next room). It's excellent! The 30fps cutscenes, which I was convinced was just DF being DF, actually is really aggravating though. Didn't think it'd bother me as much as it does.
But fuck that anyways, the shootybangs are incredible. The sound is excellent. The visuals are super clean and, as many reviews said, it's kinda how early Halo exists in my mind. I've never been the biggest fan of the series, but this aesthetic, this music, and this gunplay is making me very nostalgic for the original game on the OG Xbox.
It also just slots nicely into this somewhat open world design without missing a beat. Feels quite natural in fact. Colour me impressed.

I'm pretty sure I've played them all and I have no idea what's going on with the plot. Just a fun pick up and play.

Yeah the 30fps cutscenes really stick out when everything around them is so crisp and smooth. They don't even look like a smooth 30 either. I'm sure I spotted some out of sync voice acting too.
Amazed that Series X couldn't run them at 60 and hope 343 can continue to work on improvements.
Kinda wish MS bit the bullet and went next gen only for this game.

Cutscenes aren't 30fps, they are 60fps, but for some reason the frames aren't delivered evenly. They feel really bad to watch. If they had been 30fps with correct frames delivery, it would have been a lot better.

If they had been 30fps with correct frames delivery, it would have been a lot better. According to DF the engine is running at 60fps, but the animations are running (unevenly) at half rate. Apparently 343i are on it and will issue a patch at some point in 2026. Whatever the cause, it's distracting and shit. Thankfully 99% of the time in the game is not cutscenes, so it's not a game breaker.

Really? I mean, it's the engine that'd be the limiting factor and it's a cross gen engine. Given that the multiplayer at least will need to be maintained for the foreseeable, I'm dubious. But there is precedent - didn't Destiny do something similar? The difference there being that they owed nothing to the previous gen peeps - for MS it would be a dangerous move. I guess they could move the new content into Halo Infiniter, or whatever the sequel is called, and just migrate people's progress. Wouldn't be any more strange than how they've handled the Infinite rollout so far.

I could definitely see Microsoft going next gen only for any future expansions for this. I doubt it. Basically, they would have to make DLC that is only compatible with the Series version. That is already pretty rare in itself, and for a Smart Delivery game it would be unheard of. Suppose they would have to release Halo Infinite 2 for that.

The thing is that Smart Delivery means there is effectively one version of the game that runs differently on supported Xbox platforms. This is not like Destiny on 360 and Xbox One, which were two different games. I don't see how they could make DLC for it that only works on some platforms for the same game. If they wanted to do that, they would first need to release a new, specific version of Halo Infinite that only runs on SX. Of course, that wouldn't be hard to fix. They could indeed make Halo Infinite HD, or something like that, that only runs on SX and is available for free to all owners of the game. ANd then use that for future DLC. Also, this is all new territory. For all we know, it might be indeed possible to make DLC that doesn't run on Xbox One (they would also have to make sure that it doesn't show up on the store then). I don't think it would be good from a marketing standpoint though. I think Halo Infinite 2/HD/whatever is more likely. When they talked about their 10 years plan, I think they just meant that Infinite would be the start of their GaaS venture, not that they would never release another game in the series for the next 10 years.

So last night I made sure Halo was updating, took the kids to bed, had tea with the missus, and settled down to play... only to find that I had to go into the game and request it download the campaign. Sigh.
Anyway, I still manged to play, even if I did end up staying up till half one. I just wanted to get onto Zeta before I went to bed. And I echo what everyone else is saying: it's glorious. Fast, exciting, damn fun, and I think it looks lovely too. Can't wait to get back onto it tonight.

Story plays great doesn't it? It's nice that they've solved Halo's identity crisis by just going back to being as much like Halo as they can but bigger, faster, louder. PC performance is really the only drawback so far.

I've just given up on the PC version. Couldn't seem to find a way to download the campaign without the game running, and given how nicely it plays on a controller plus some of the glaring issues with the PC version highlighted in the DF article I just said fuck it and uninstalled this morning.
