I've only ever seen the photo where they're standing holding the bill up, this is like a little anniversary gift! That's the best pic right enough. As guilty as a puppy next to a big pile of poo. You've got to admire his, ahem, balls though. Just carried on, trying desperately to brave it out. There's no way his wife believed him

Another tourist died on death island aka Koh Tao
for people that don't know lots of brutal murders on this tiny island, lots of police corruption and with the most infamous case (mentioned in the news link) hannah and david was just blamed on some migrant fisherman. The news article does not go much into hannah and david's murder but its far worse than posted by the mirror
With the death of Theo, you blame drinks and drugs but on that island, the police can find someone tied up with gunshot wound and the police there will just say "must of taken his own life"
Lots of other nice islands and places in thailand to visit. Fuck all the twats that defend KT on forums/reddit etc due to their have business there

A little sensationalist, I lived there for 12 months and have no current or previous connection to it other than I wanted somewhere to doss about when I was younger. I never personally saw any trouble when I was there and plenty of people have a very good time. However there is a criminal "underbelly" much like any other place in the world and if you fuck about with the wrong people you put yourself at risk. Most trouble was normally caused with young backpackers acting like idiots and not paying money owed for drugs they were buying or starting fights with local gangs. It makes a good headline though but your just as likely to have the same trouble behaving like that in any other place in the world. Maybe less police "cover ups".....maybe

Also I do doubt this guy and the other 2 british man and woman were "young backpackers acting like idiots and not paying money owed for drugs they were buying or starting fights with local gangs".
When did you stay on the island? heard a while back it was better place, something like early 2000's

What makes you so sure they weren't? Obviously still doesn't justify death but it's the same anywhere you go? I was there a year before the two murders you mentioned and I still have friends that come and go there. It's largely all "myths" and urban legend. "Death island" makes a good headline though. Check out the death rates for other tourist destinations....

I think trying to blame tourist getting murdered on trying to rip off drug dealers, (something that is unproven) comes off as vile for that people that were murdered. tourists that act like dickheads to locals tend to get beaten up but never murdered. Looking up deaths at other thai tourist destinations tend to be road accidents (Been to thailand and seen locals and tourists on mopeds driving like idiots, add in taxi drivers), also this places are bigger places

The cold hard truth is its predominatly full of people mostly under 30 getting absolutly shit faced, or people looking to chill. The ones that get shit faced get into trouble inevitably, either through fights or gobbing off to the wrong people. 10 or so deaths in as many years is not a lot. If I could be bothered I would google stats. Sounds to me more like your buying into the media narrative around the island. Which is absolutly fine but to imply its worse than anywhere else is simply wrong or just plain dumb.

No tinfoil hate conspiracy here, for a tiny little island it does make the news a lot.

fontgeek relevant(ish) news, Katharine Castle, RPS editor, is moving to be EG's editor
her stint at RPS was frankly excellent and i'd say it bodes well for EG

Does this mean Tom Philips is following Wes out of the door?
EG could really use a period of stability, from what I can tell - perhaps Katharine is the person to provide it.

But unfortunately that coincided with me largely losing interest in the site as it became a more standard games news site with guide and game deals and news, but not that much interesting to read.
Not really her fault either, but it also coincided with most of the remaining writers that I liked leaving or drastically cutting output, and me moving over here.
She kept it alive though, and I suspect that wasn't easy.

I keep a bookmark to the reviews section of RPS and they still have a bunch of lovely writers. But yeah, it's gone from a site I visited almost daily (and read virtually everything) to one I check maybe twice a month or when I'm interested in a particular game and want to read some wordy-thinks about it.
I'm also not as fussed about keeping up with new games these days and I've sort of ossified a bit in terms of the genres I play, so part of it is me changing as much as RPS has.
Re: Thailand, I've never understood why it's so popular. Still a quasi-dictatorship (military junta in charge until very recently), a low key civil war going on for the past 20 years, the sex tourism and trafficking, tens of thousands of street kids that are treated like they don't exist by the government and society in general, horrible treatment of animals. I'm sure it's lovely if you're visiting as a tourist or living there as a relatively wealthy westerner, but fuck that place.

Not sure where else to put this but it’s about news, so…
It’s a new angle on “the law only exists for poor people” that I wasn’t aware of
TLDR - Hugh Grant settled out of court with The Sun, but not because he was only in it for the money- it’s UK civil liability law meaning he’d be liable for huge legal costs even if he won.

And somebody was grumbling at that student receiving legal aid for their appeal. Shit’s expensive: can’t have only rich people having access to the various arcane processes.
