I keep a bookmark to the reviews section of RPS and they still have a bunch of lovely writers. But yeah, it's gone from a site I visited almost daily (and read virtually everything) to one I check maybe twice a month or when I'm interested in a particular game and want to read some wordy-thinks about it.
I'm also not as fussed about keeping up with new games these days and I've sort of ossified a bit in terms of the genres I play, so part of it is me changing as much as RPS has.
Re: Thailand, I've never understood why it's so popular. Still a quasi-dictatorship (military junta in charge until very recently), a low key civil war going on for the past 20 years, the sex tourism and trafficking, tens of thousands of street kids that are treated like they don't exist by the government and society in general, horrible treatment of animals. I'm sure it's lovely if you're visiting as a tourist or living there as a relatively wealthy westerner, but fuck that place.
Same, I've basically moved back to PC Gamer. As I read PC Gamer UK in the late 90s/early 00s when Jim, Kieron and John wrote for them, was part of the pcguk forum, then that all merged into the US and everyone kinda jumped to RPS. I may just be old or out of touch but the various trends but they don't seem to be as into RPGs, strategy or immersive sims like they used to.

It's annoying that they stuck 95% of Sin's stuff behind the supporter's only wall. I genuinely didn't think they were still writing for RPS, but it turns out they still are. It's just that most of it is hidden. That and the fact that they have, like, 3 Guides writers and one staff writer. And Katherine and at least one of the other writers/editors being really into JRPG type stuff.
So the only one who's writing and tastes were of interest was hidden behind the paywall of doom.

it really is, annoying too that the paywall is considerably more expensive than the EG version, and sad we've lost Alice O this week too whose output had lessened lately but who remains the best news writer in the business by far. Still, Alice Bee is fantastic (tho as a now twice published author, who knows if she'll hang around), the lad Edwin Something-Double-Barrelled is excellent, and new boy Nic Reuben is covering a strategy hole in the line up although i'm not really gelling with his writing so far
i've been really impressed with their output the last ~twelve months, really started pushing more interview and investigative pieces, they started having a voice again, an opinion

I like the Alices, although Alice O was kinda wasted writing snarky versions of press releases.
It's good to hear they've started getting their voices and opinions back. They seemed to have given all that up in the past few years. Is Nic new? It feels like he's been around for ages. But it also felt like 90% of their output was by freelancers, which meant you never really got a feel for them as a person. And they'd come in and do 10 articles a day for a few months, then disappear to be replaced by another one.
Sticking specific writers behind the paywall never made much sense to me. How is it meant to appeal to anyone who isn't already a member. Heck, I know I like Sin's writing, but I still had no idea what the heck she was writing behind the paywall, and whether it was worth the money, or just being forced to pump out x articles a week.

yeah think Nic's been freelancing for quite a while before he got a full time gig, re Sin's stories, she's clearly got a free reign to "let Sin be Sin" and as such they're quite varied, and baffling why they're all kept behind a paywall. still have a supporter tag till this summer (may have to re-evaluate then, finances not quite as brill this year as last), can jailbreak them for you if you like

I gave up mine a while a go. I thought it was quite indicative that when they made Nic permanent they made a point of saying that they finally had a strategy person on staff again. As yeah Jrpgs are not my thing.

Immediately thought of what you'd been saying. I can really see the appeal of them tbh.

The answer is clear, shack up young, pop a kid out and in 18 years you can have three family members contributing to the mortgage.

I guess you could send a couple of the kids out to work as chimneysweeps, then you wouldn't have to wait the full 18 years.

Stolen from estate makes it sound like some country toff had loads of Kinder Bueno hoarded in his mansion. Makes for a much better story.

I read estate as council estate and was disappointed. I was envisioning a turf war ensuing.

As the saying goes, don't put all your Kinder Bueno in one industrial estate.

If you have a spare $450, you can buy this big-ass Pokemon plushie:
Also, thanks to a user review from 'Georgia M.', I now have the perfect tagline for my Plenty of Fish account:

Apparently every other country has sex festivals...? where's our sex festival?? We’re waiting for Rishi to declare an erection, so we can go to the local church hall to insert things into a slot and fill a box, in order to give him a public spanking.

I can't decide if it's funny or depressing that they need to import Japanese porn stars for their festival.

No sense of direction. Running around recklessly. Damaging people’s health and safety. Ignoring calls to stop.
Vote horse for more of the same.
