The automatic barriers at Heathrow are super quick to go through, unfortunately children under 12 aren’t allowed to use them and they only appear to have 2 actual people left to check passports manuallY so if you land at the same time as the Florida flight, you’re fucked

I'm fairly sure they make it difficult and unfriendly at Heathrow to make it look like they are taking immigration seriously to really stick it to the dodgy illegals. Hostile environment etc. Always sends me into a rant, annoying my family and increasing my odds of arrest. I nearly got nicked once at Stansted for going off in a rant. It all started with them saying something about have a Happy Easter and me responding with fuck is it April already, it was February when I joined the queue. The thing was, a Daily Mail journalist had apprently the day before, gained entry on a fake passport in order to do an exposee which meant that they were on a go slow, making a show of tripple checking everyone and everything and telling us all to stop buying the Daily Mail.

Just came back from LA earlier this week and actually had zero problems going through Heathrow, both going and coming back. Passport check on arrival was actually super quick. Security going out was perhaps a bit slower than normally, but certainly not the horror stories I was hearing. LA on the otherhand was incredibly slow going through immigration. Queued probably for about 45 minutes then the system crashed as I was doing my finger prints. Had to wait about 15 minutes for it to reboot. Fortunately, it was with the one friendly US border control worker. Got to the baggage just in time, as a couple of flight crew were standing over our bags looking like they were ready to cart them off. Was a great holiday. All very touristy, with the WB tour, Hollywood Boulevard, tour of the stars' homes, the Disneyland parks and Universal.

Going from London to Paris was all manned desks and much easier.

Off to Marrakech in less than 2 hours. Manchester Airport is massive but terminal 3 is shite.
Managed to leave my sunglasses at home so treated myself to a new set of aviators, because fuck it, we're all going to die at the hands of Liz Truss anyway.

Thinking of having a "working holiday" this autumn. Haven't been out the country in a few years and haven't got the stamina to do a whole beach day or whatever, so something near the sea, abroad, with good enough wifi to do my morning video calls and then enjoy some afternoon sun suits me.
Suggestions? Been thinking Barcelona but been there a few times.

Malta is a bit of a shithole outside of Valetta or Gozo, though. We went there for a two week holiday before lockdown and it felt a week too long. Just one big building site without a workman in sight.

Crete and Malta look like 4 hour flight times. Anything around 2 hours is better.

Two hours, that kinda limits things a bit, also which airport are you flying from?

I think if you get further out of town, there are a few nice countryside/coastal areas. But it has been a long time since I went.
Maybe they built over it.
Advantage of going there in autumn is that it's a lot less full of british tourists.
PS/ 4 hours to Malta? Seriously?

One of my lame to fames is that I was in Malta while they were filming Gladiator and was in the pub in valetta that oliver reed died in two nights before he pegged it. It was near where we were staying, so almost went in the night he died but it was a bit of a dive with union jack flags plastered all over it.
And, yes, Malta is largely a shithole.

My old man did his national service in Malta. Every photo I have seen of him is with a beer or whisky in hand. He had a blast.

Cost of living crisis, country is in turmoil, inflation through the roof, interest rates set to balloon. We have just booked an all inclusive in the Maldives for August 2023... Yes I am a fucking idiot

I have just decided to embrace old age and repeat everything I've ever heard from my folks. Apart from the racisms. They can keep that obviously.

You're only an idiot if you can't afford it. It’s tight. It’s my wife’s 50th and she has always wanted to go there so I thought fuck it let’s do it. I have half the money in an account. Just hoping I can save a bit and my bonus next year will cover the rest. If not it will be my old friend credit card. Kids are beyond excited though

Also looking at the Maldives in April for our honeymoon. That shit is not cheap.
I'm looking to sell my flat so me and the future Mrs GoatApocalypse can rent somewhere in the city centre together, but it looks like I'll need it just to liquidate the cash to pay for the holiday!

I would consider some alternatives, the Maldives carries a premium because it has that reputation but there are alternatives just as nice but for a little less if you don't need the kudos.

2 three day weekends this week. And each one got a bloody typhoon so we couldn't go out anywhere or do anything except stay home and watch tv and play video games. Grr.
