Obviously we're all travelling less in pandemic times but hopefully we can gradually have some holidays and trips to look forward to.
Next month we're going down to Alicante/Valencia to see the in-laws for the first time in almost 2 years, can't wait to see them and enjoy the great grub down there. Feels weird looking forward to going away after so long. 3 weeks off will be really well received.

You've just reminded me that my passport expired last month. So yeah, no plans for travel outside the country for a while!

December 2019 I finally renewed my passport, timing was impeccable. Have left the house once a week since then, our next trip will be a permanent move.

It'll be Australia, kids really need to be closer to their grandparents and by closer I still mean 2000km away. Got a couple years of the wife's contract to run down which hopefully will correlate with when things start returning to some type of normality. I mean even as a citizen it's unlikely I could get back in the country easily or affordably at the moment. Plus some of the areas we are considering we have never been to so it will be like a holiday at first.

Fuck. Flying to Thailand on 3rd December. I so wish I could push back to the 16th.
A new airline has started, Scoot Air. Gatwick to Bangkok direct return for £209. That is insanely cheap.

Off to Innsbruck for a few days at Christmas, just for a change. We could only fly on the 24th, which was a bit of a tactical error as that's when they celebrate Christmas there. The only place I could find to get some food was a posh hotel. It turns out I've booked us into a black tie gala dinner... Which should be fun but wasn't exactly what I wanted.

Bonus points if you rock up at it in your comfy travelling trackies, with a sleepmask on your forehead and one of those neck things for holding your head up upon arrival at the fancy do!

Who knows what will be possible this year but hopefully in spring/summer we'll be able to travel safely. After watching lots of Scandi TV recently, I'm keen on a short trip to Norway/Sweden, there's a train trip from Oslo to Bergen that looks stunning and all the Fjords near Bergen look amazing. Apart from visiting family in Spain we'll hopefully get to pop over the border to Italy and France and I'd love to get back to Japan and visit my brother in Australia at the end of the year. God knows if either of those will be possible this year, likely not

I'm planning on going to Hungary in April. Doing Budapest and Lake Balaton. Any recommendations on stuff to see and do? Obvs going to do a river cruise and see the Hungarian Parliament building.

I fancy a trip to Turkmenistan it with it already being a challenging country to get access to and unknown COVID entry bans not sure when it I'll be viable. Just have to hope they don't succeed in putting out the 'Gate of Hell' before I get to visit as that is one o the things I would like to see.
On more realistic trips is there anything special to be aware of travelling from GB to NI re.Covid etc?

Thinking of doing a small trip abroad soonish. Does anyone have any experience of the preflight PCR tests as I will need a '72 hours before' one. Looking online with me being nowhere near the big cities Boots looks like the best option. Any opinions, warnings or advice?

We’ve used c19testing.co.uk whenever we have needed travel tests. They’ve been good and results arrived quickly.

I want to see some of the old silk road ruins and the gas crater. The off the beaten path factor also slightly appeals too I admit. With COVID restrictions I don't think I will be able to do it this year though.

Looks like we're going to jump on the train and head down to Northern Italy for 4-5 days over Easter (Sat-Wed).
Options considered are
1) Based in Padua, visit Vicenza, Venice and maybe Treviso. 2) Based in Cremona, visit Mantua and Piacenza 3) Based in Bologna, can visit Modena, Ferrara and Ravenna.
Think all three would be great so hard to choose, been twice to Venice but you never tire of it, spent a day in Bologna about 18 years ago, otherwise all places are new to us. Anyone with any experience around those places?

I used to stay in Padua once a year as a stop off point to Greece and it was great for train links to Venice etc. and a really nice place in its own right to explore in the evening when you return.
Edit - btw, Vincenza was better for food than Padua I thought.

Think we'll probably just stay in one place to avoid apartment switching.

I've done both but it was so long ago I can't really say, especially as I was driving and you will be relying on trains.

I'm pretty sure Michael Palin has already covered this but a rail trip(or via road) from somewhere like Morocco to Cape Town would be a pretty bad idea if it's even possible, right? Even to get to Kenya and Mozambique looks possibly worse. I mean is Egypt even safe these days, can you safely cruise the Suez and Gulf of Aden?
These are genuine questions too, I'm happy to be educated but would people here take a family of four on trips like that?
