I’ve never looked at the Africa section but this is the best site for planning those kind of rail trips: www.seat61.com/

Looks like we're going to jump on the train and head down to Northern Italy for 4-5 days over Easter (Sat-Wed). Options considered are 1) Based in Padua, visit Vicenza, Venice and maybe Treviso. 2) Based in Cremona, visit Mantua and Piacenza 3) Based in Bologna, can visit Modena, Ferrara and Ravenna. Think all three would be great so hard to choose, been twice to Venice but you never tire of it, spent a day in Bologna about 18 years ago, otherwise all places are new to us. Anyone with any experience around those places? Stayed in Treviso for a couple of nights 4 or 5 years ago. Brilliant place. Only 40 mins by train to Venice. It's like a mini Venice, only nicer and without the tourists.

For another trip but I was reading about Trento further North, looks really lovely.

Funnily enough, I have some time coming up and my inlaws are visiting so we were planning a trip too.
We’re in Ecuador, so I’m torn between two of these four: 1. The Andes - Chimborazo is the obvious choice but the weather is never reliable, maybe one of the volcanoes. 2. The Amazon - her parents don’t really like the heat plus the insects can really get on top of you, thinking no further than Banos but I do love the monkeys. 3. The coast - nailed on. Probably Puerto Lopez but maybe Salinas as well. Mompiche is somewhere I want to visit but it’s s bit far on a coach, maybe next time. 4. Galapagos. Lovely but beyond pricy, we’ve talked about Isla de la Plata and honestly that looks the better option.

My gf lived there for a year in her teens and would love to go back, definitely on our list for the future. I didn't realise Galapagos was stupid pricy these days, does seem amazing.

Malcesine is worth a visit if you are doing Lake Garda (which I prefer to Como).

We are looking at Sardinia to do a Eurocamp type thing. Has anybody been there and can recommend a certain area?

trento's lovely - also a big fan of the northern part of lake garda I still haven't been to Lake Garda, been to Maggiore and Como loads of times but never went that Far East I need more free time. the northern end is beautiful - fond memories of wandering in the surrounding hills and chancing upon wine shops...malcesine, riva & limone all beautiful places and the ferries make visiting all so easy quite a while since we visited, but limone used to have a fabulous food festival, where you'd wander the town at night following a map to various taverns, popup food stalls etc with a different food or drink at each

I last went on holiday in 2014. last time we went abroad was 2008 - that was the lake garda holiday that my wife's parents paid for...we were never able to afford to go anywhere usually and then her declining health put paid to any travelling anyway... we had a week in devon every year as her parents live down there - thankfully i (1) love devon & (2) get on very well with her parents - very rarely were able to go anywhere else

Garda is nice but I'd choose Como every time. Bellagio in particular is such a nice place to stay. Looking at maybe trying Lugano in the summer as that looks worth a visit.

I’ve never looked at the Africa section but this is the best site for planning those kind of rail trips: www.seat61.com/I forgot totally about that website, cheers for reminding me. Still not convinced Africa is the safest place for such travels. In an ideal world I'd love to make one big holiday/transit if we go back to Australia. Preferably without flying, I think I could sell that as it would be our last chance for a big trip for many years. It just seems that the quickest route may not be entirely the safest and that bugs me, the other option would be to go via the US but doubt it would be affordable. In fact not sure it'd be affordable doing that in any route, I know you can take a cruise from Lisbon to Cape Town and then get one to say Perth but that is on the Queen Mary 2. I wish they had speed cruiseliners more for transit than a holiday experience.

Didn't seem much point on going on holiday after that.

That would be nice.

Yeah, Seat61 has been invaluable to me in the past to organise my cross-Russia and various cross-Europe trips and I always check it out even for less railway based countries. I would like to go to the African continent someday but not this year... Egypt and Ethiopia are the most appealing places and possibly Morocco.
A few months in South America is the dream trip though.

Seat 61 is quite good, they specifically have a section on what I would like to do so it is possible but dread to think of the costs.

You can't take it with you etc. True although we are hoping to take as much as possible with us back to Oz. A possible 50 grand plus chunk of savings all to allay my fear of flying is going to be a tough sell even if it's a once in a lifetime trip. I doubt I'd get lucky enough to be able to fund it with magic internet money. We could maybe do the Lisbon to Cape Town cruise then I'd have to compromise with a flight.

@h-alphaFox, a couple who are friends of a friend (all Ozzies) went the overland route back from the UK when they went back for good. I can't remember the route they took (but could ask) but I do recall that they dumped a car that they took from the UK as far overland as they could - it was part of the plan, they didn't end up dumping it for dodgy reasons.
My friend himself was planning on doing the Magic Bus for his return, is that still a thing? He ended up getting a job in Texas though so never did do the overland trip in the end and when he did move home he just flew from the states.
/ you can always send your stuff in a crate.
