My wife’s booked a month of holiday for us this summer and I can’t be fucked with it tbh. Rather stay at home than do a month anywhere Maybe she only meant to book it for herself?

You can't take it with you etc. True although we are hoping to take as much as possible with us back to Oz. A possible 50 grand plus chunk of savings all to allay my fear of flying is going to be a tough sell even if it's a once in a lifetime trip. I doubt I'd get lucky enough to be able to fund it with magic internet money. We could maybe do the Lisbon to Cape Town cruise then I'd have to compromise with a flight. In that case, I'd just get hypnotised/drugged and book a business class flight and sleep though it.

@h-alphaFox, a couple who are friends of a friend (all Ozzies) went the overland route back from the UK when they went back for good. I can't remember the route they took (but could ask) but I do recall that they dumped a car that they took from the UK as far overland as they could - it was part of the plan, they didn't end up dumping it for dodgy reasons. My friend himself was planning on doing the Magic Bus for his return, is that still a thing? He ended up getting a job in Texas though so never did do the overland trip in the end and when he did move home he just flew from the states. / you can always send your stuff in a crate. I'm not sure of how safe an overland route would be these days and probably wouldn.t be up for driving. That's an adventure for sure but too much towing 2 kids and possibly a dog. As Eccose says I'm probably better of flying but I do feel like this would be the last chance for a long time to make something more of the trip and have a little holiday on the way.

What about a shorter flight to somewhere then adventure from there. e.g. Flight to Japan or Korea then work your way down through East Asia, SE Asia to Australia.

Something like that could work, who knows what destinations would get brought up but Japan is high on a list of want to visit places over somewhere like Abidjan. I mean these are just my thoughts, we haven't discussed it in depth but can easily see many smaller flights that might crop up.

Work calls doesn’t really work in my line of business. We’re “travelling” technically, it should be fun. 2 weeks Toronto, then 2 weeks British Columbia, going over to vancouver island and that sort of stuff. Just the thought of a whole month away isn’t my dream, I’m ready to go home after a week anywhere and I can only work at home. It’s her dream though so I’m down for that, the kids are excited. I’ve made it very clear what a wonderful husband I am to suffer such an inconvenience of course

We did Canada when I was about 13, started at Vancouver and drove across the Rockies to Calgary(in a Lincoln Continental) and flew to Toronto to stay with friends. Took a brief diversion to Florida for the Wally Worlds. It was nice.

Yeah, Seat61 has been invaluable to me inn the past to organise my cross-Russia and various cross-Europe trips and I always check it out even for less railway based countries. I would like to go to the African continent someday but not this year... Egypt and Ethiopia are the most appealing places and possibly Morocco. A few months in South America is the dream trip though. Did you do the trans-Siberian express? Yes, I did the Vladivostok to Moscow route with a northern detour onto the Baikal Amur line to check out Komsomolsk and Tynda too. I decided to take the scenic route from South Korea where I had been living.

I forgot totally about that website, cheers for reminding me. Still not convinced Africa is the safest place for such travels. I do find this a little bit funny when there's currently in a hot war with a nuclear superpower in Europe.

Quite a contrast to the 3 weeks doing Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia I did the month before (last trip before I left Asia) which was a tad sunnier...

I haven't been on a plane for over 12 years, but need to fly to Cork in December, back the next day. There are suitable Ryanair flights on both days, what's the best way to book? Direct with Ryanair or are there various money saving methods I need to know about?

All set for Italy at Easter, 2 nights in Padua, 2 nights in Venice and plenty of trains. /Excited. Also just booked flights to see the in-laws in Alicante in June, easyJet just are amazing in their ability to be more shitty and cultish with their luggage policy, don't they?

Going to a glamping place for three nights this weekend near Bath. It has free childcare slots....! And a spa for parents to get massages.
