We’re half way through an all-inclusive in Mauritius. It’s paradise although there isn’t much to do in our area outside of the resort. First beach holiday in about 10 years though so we’re happy to laze about with the occasional excursion.
Thought we were being clever going after the school holidays but I guess other countries are on different schedules as a shit load of kids turned up after the first few days.

So in the summer hols last year the Mercury clan (two adults + 9 & 12 yr old boys) had a pretty successful albeit seemingly quite expensive three day trip away to Bristol (we live in South Devon), Bristol worked pretty well for us, we could all do something as a family in the mornings and then Mrs Mercury could rest up in the PM as I took the boys off to entertain them at the various skate parks/boys stuff around the city, meals out in the evening.
We'd like to do something similar this summer and could just lump for Bristol again but fancy a different venue, any suggestions for places within say max. 2hrs of South Devon with lots going on? Thinking perhaps Cardiff, Newport, Cheltenham or Gloucester, maybe Bournemouth I don't know. Bath seems pretty boring/small compared to Bristol.

I’ve been to Newport and it’s a shithole.
Bath or a nice coastal area in Cornwall?
We’ve started going to fairly random places around the country, there’s always something there and the biggest benefit is it’s just a change of scenery.

Good shout on Newport, thing is my boys need to be doing something or they'll be climbing the walls, a nice walk somewhere just doesn't rub it unfortunately.

Depends on what sort of things they want to do then. Bristol is the busiest of those you’ve suggested but the rest have the usual entertainment and activities but all are quieter. Cheltenham is alright but not as busy as Bristol and has fewer options.
Bath isn’t more boring than Bristol but if you’re ruling out anything historical then that will limit it a lot. There’s a lot of sporting things there, nearly everywhere has skate parks and some decent restaurants.

Are they into paddleboarding or surfing? Colwyn Bay or somewhere similar might work
Bournemouth is a good shout if you don't want to do Brizzle again

I'm in Wales for a week, near Bala.
Only off work for 5 days but it's the longest break from work I've had since, well, this time last year.

The helicopter trips generally go to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon which while still impressive, isn't really the famous view you normally see. For that, you need to go to the Grand Canyon National Park, which doesn't allow helicopters. You can still do it in a day from Vegas but generally, it involves flying out and back on a small plane.

God no, that was the end of that. Still had a week of holiday to muddle through as well. Told her something about not believing in marriage, so of course he’s now married to someone else

I'd like to do that canyon rafting stuff. Sans going over a waterfall or getting fucked by hillbillies.
The mrs really wants to the east to west winnebago run for some reason. I think we have just watched Paul too much.

I think we have just watched Paul too much. I've genuinely considered doing a run/ walk Forrest Gump style from east to west. Google says walking nonstop takes about 5 weeks, so figure you do a total of 15-20 miles a day (split between jogging and walking at 3mph) and it would take you around 5 months. But apparently tourist visas are only 3 months so probably have to figure that out.

Did the Vegas & Grand Canyon thing back in 2008, but our helicopter trip was cancelled because of high winds etc. They compensated us with a coach day trip (plus a refund) to the canyon as an alternative.
Long ass day, but in hindsight felt like the cancellation was a blessing in disguise. The coach driver was mental, met some great people, stopped at some cracking diners, saw some classic tumbleweed route 66 stuff, visited the Hoover Dam and did some proper Vertigo inducing walks along the Canyon rim with some absolutely spectacular views. Superb day.
Loads to do and see in Vegas, Stratosphere rides and views are worth a giggle. Although probably the worst rides in the world if you don't like heights.

We hired a minibus (there were 8 of us) to see the Grand Canyon, from Vegas. Took in the Hoover Dam on the way. Brilliant trip, and the Grand Canyon is fucking huge. Couldn't, at first, work out what the tiny things in the distance were, realised they they were helicopters flying around! About a 12 hour round trip. Nature is mind blowing at times.

I saw a video last week of one of those helicopter tours: some tourist in the co-pilots seat put their hand on the rotor lock and the pilot got very upset. No thank you.

Advice please...
Not booked a "proper" holiday in over a decade. Never taken the kids (10/13) abroad. We're looking to book something for next October for some sun and all inclusive fun and relaxation.
I've been looking at the Canary Islands which look great (never been that way) but am wondering if, given we haven't been away for so long, I should just say "fck it!" and book Dom Rep instead?
4* Lanzarote vs 5* Dom Rep seem to be coming out at the same sort of price of around 5k for 4 peeps, skirting around the half term in October.
We did Dom Rep for our honeymoon in 2007 and absolutely loved it but can't decide if the flight would be a bit much for the nippers. Anyone done the Caribbean with a family?

Flights these days will keep them busy.
You'd probably want to build them up though. Jumping straight into a 7+ hour journey seems a bit hardcore. Have you not thought about a weekend in west Europe to get them used to it?

First flight myself, and more relevantly my brother who was 8 at the time, was to the US and in flight entertainment was a lot simpler then. My son flew to Korea aged 5 too.
So I wouldn't think any practice flights would be necessary.

Aye, they'll be absolutely fine. Maybe bring your own tablet loaded up with films + headphones for them rather than relying on the in flight stuff.
Might be nicer to go somewhere where you can just jump in a hire car and explore, though. Wouldn't fancy doing that without an armed escort in Dominican Republic...

Yes we took ours to Cyprus a few years back aged about 6 and 10 I think, they were good as gold by and large which by all accounts they are absolutely not usually (apart from actually queuing at the gate in the airport beforehand when they were absolute cocks). They had tablets/headphones and stuff to do but the whole excitement of holidays and airports and (maybe) traveling at some unearthly hour seemed to add a whole level of fascination/excitement for them. Something very exciting about driving to the airport at 3am with kids.
We rented a villa in Cyprus, it was bliss, our own pool, completely isolated, driving's a peace of piss of course. Courtesy of my late mothers demise I might add or there's no way we could have afforded it.

Jesus christ I'm in Portugal and all I can hear are Americans not attempting the language. English being very similar.
I'm forcing the local to humour my attempts at Portuguese but seriously, where are there so many Americans?
