it has better reviews than that one at least, though not great reviews.
120M for a netflix action movie doesn't seem that crazy, although they seem to be mainly straight-to-video designed-by-algorithm movies that spend most of their budget on big A-List stars like Gadot.
Shame it's not getting great reviews, as a female james bond movie is something they've been trying to pull off for years, and never seem to have quite managed to nail. Other than Salt of course.

I really enjoyed The Gray Man, but there definitely is a bit of a straight-to-video vibe to these things, that's true. And their budgets are inflated because they can't really pay residuals so the stars get all their money up-front.
With you on Salt, too. It's such a shame that didn't start a franchise.

They should try one with an up and coming actress like Margot Robbie.

Because he wants to watch a female Bond film with good reviews? Yes, thanks, I get that, I just wondered why it was a shame that this particular film didn't get good reviews. I mean the industry could do it if it wanted to, but obviously it seems really out of their reach for some mysterious reason.

Hollywood should just make the next Bond female. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

I know almost nothing about this movie, except seeing a small bit of an interview with Gadot and she seemed to be talking it up pretty well, so I was hopeful. It sounded like a legit attempt to make a female James Bond-ish franchise, but where the main character was actually female, rather than just a gender-flipped male spy.
Of course, you never know whether they actually believe these things or are just doing their contractually obligated promotion.
Tbh, I hadn't realised it was a netflix thing. I thought it was a proper cinema release. *shrug*

Ehhh, with these Netflix things I don't believe any of them are really invested in the movie. If I was getting the money that Netflix is dishing out then sure I would definitely act my ass off about how great the movie is.
I'm being really cynical sure but I don't think they're trying to make any great stuff here, it's just more fodder for the algorithm but with a famous face attached. It obviously works despite the reviews.

Agree. Can't remember the last time I looked at a Netflix film and it appeared to be anything but the most generic fodder imaginable, even if it had big names in it. Can't say I can ever get much enthusiasm to put any of them on.
It's been a long time since they have put money towards anything like Roma (even back then it wasn't much better - Bird Box came out just a few days after Roma).

I think the different streamers have different aims. Apple seems to want to court big established directors to do prestigious Oscar-y dramas. Amazon seems happy to make the kind of mid-budget thrillers and dramas that "they don't make anymore". And Netflix has settled into DTV-style action, sometimes with huge budgets and stars, sometimes not...

And Netflix has settled into DTV-style action, sometimes with huge budgets and stars, sometimes not... Amazon seem to be going for quite a range of stuff, they’ve got cheap stuff, mid tier and huge budget stuff. All of them are throwing money at things like they’re going to be able to own the whole market and that’s never going to happen. I don’t get how any think they’ll make a profit by regularly spending hundreds of millions on something that goes straight to streaming. People seem more interested in cheaper decent shows than blockbusters.

I think with Apple and Amazon they're gonna be happy with it being a loss-making adjunct to their real businesses. Bezos shat a billion dollars on LOTR with pretty much nothing to show for it so far apart from one mediocre season of TV.
How Netflix, Disney, etc can afford to keep their services going (with new content) I've no idea. Once you get to businesses "leveraging debt" I go cross-eyed.

Netflix are the outlier here ironically, even though they kickstarted the thing.
Apple are sitting on about $200bn, what else are they going to spend money on? Not R&D anymore certainly. Amazon in a similar position and Disney have their legacy stuff and merchandising empire.
Netflix have none of that and rely on the business model alone. Not going to end well for them.

They're an outlier in the sense that they are pretty much the only streaming service that is actually profitable (massive debt pile notwithstanding).
We're already seeing Disney pivot on their Disney+ strategy because of how much they are losing, it doesn't matter how much money a business has, they always want more; none of them are doing this because they want to jettison some of their excess cash. Expect more consolidation and ads appearing in more services in the months ahead as focus switches from expansion to trying to squeeze more profit out of existing users

I just don't think that will fly really. People are used to no ads, now. I certainly wouldn't get an ad-based service I pay for. Either it's free with ads or it's paid for. Not both.
I'm waiting for the day they go to "12 month subscription" models

That is 100% the next thing on their list.
Currently, you can drop in and out. When belts get tightened, streaming is the first to go. They'll probably do something like...
1 month rolling - £20 pcm 12 month equivalent of £15 pcm
Then they've got to think of reasons to keep people signed up. Disney started with weekly episode drops, so people can't binge and then they couple that with the mass media FOMO attack.
It's been said before but streaming will just replace cable/ Sky and not in the good way.

You say that but the Netflix ad-supported tier has reportedly been very successful, so much so that they've been able to up the streaming quality to 1080p and have dropped the ad-free basic tier altogether. Disney+ is also going down the ads route.
If taking ads saves money then some people will absolutely take that option.

That is fucking bonkers. I purposefully turn up 15-20 minutes late to a film to avoid being adverted at.
Either you pay for something and receive only that thing or you don't and you get ads. UNINTRUSIVE ADS, Reach media.

Aye. I didn't mind trailers for other films as part of the cinema experience, but these days there's 10 mins of actual fucking ads thrown in too.
+1 for rocking up late.
