I never watch commercial television and am on someone’s ad free YouTube now, so the only time I even GET to see ads is at the movies 2-3 times a year. How else will I know what I could be buying?

Not wanting to get adverts with things you pay for is unusual? I also turn up 15 minutes after the start time at the cinema to avoid adverts. Why would you not? I see the advertised showtime as queuing up for disappointing popcorn and a large Diet Coke time. By the time I've sat down with my dull salty popcorn I'll catch a couple of trailers and I'm good to go for the film. A lot of movies are long enough as it is that avoiding adding on extra time just to watch ads is an easy decision for me to make.

I can concede watching the trailers as part of the cinema experience and I normally don't mind being in time for those.
Can't see why you would want to watch the ads before that though.

If I get there while the non-trailer ads are going I just look at my phone.

Am I weird for downloading a couple of Pearl & Dean ads and setting them up to run before movies on Kodi/Plex?
Cos I definitely didn't do that. No sir.

I’m 100% on geefe’s side. I’m not paying to still get ads. It’s a big reason I’ve never subbed to hulu. At some point, they did introduce an ad-free tier, but by then I’d already swore them off on principle.

I don't do that but as another person also not living in the UK I do miss those little things when I go to the cinema in my current country of residence so I get it.

I don't want to watch ads before the film but I'm not going to go out of my way to time my arrival to miss them. I'll just chat to whoever I'm with while they're on.
I doubt I would pay for an ad-supported streaming tier either but it's not incomprehensible to me that other people would have different priorities.

Last few times I went to cinema here in Belfast they had 5 mins of ads, 5 mins of trailers and then 5 mins of ads again, so if you want the trailers to be part of the experience here you're also stuck with ads regardless.
Was in someone's house the other day and she kept putting YouTube videos on and the amount of ads... No way could I go back to that thing willingly without the premium.

Was she not skipping them after 15 or so seconds?

The first 3 or 4 videos had two you couldn't skip in each so she gave up trying after that. I probably wouldn't have minded that is they were half hour videos or whatever but they were all between 5 and 10 just.

I miss when cinema ads were a blurry still image of a kebab and the out-of-focus text said "Pav's Takeaway on Corporation Road - only 5 minute's walk! Open till 1am!"

People pay a fortune for Sky every month and that’s full of ads. The number of people that only watch things ad free is a tiny minority.
But yes, at a cinema skip the ads but get there for the trailers. Fuck cineworld for putting ads after trailers too.

I guess I'm kinda spoiled in Andorra, the movies actually start at the specified time. It's kinda weird.

I loved ot during covid when the films had no ads to minimise exposure time. They have gone into overdrive since. I clocked Mission Impossible started 30 minutes after supposed start time. Nonsense.

See I don't mind the ads too much and I do love the trailers. But if you go to the cinema too often then seeing the same things again and again can drive you a bit barmy. I'm kinda glad the "cinema's better than the telly" ad with John Boyega and Ridley Scott seems to have gone away, as I must have seen that a few dozen times.
Also I saw three 12A-rated films in the space of about two weeks recently, and I swear they had exactly the same trailers, in the same order - I'd say the same "reel" but I don't know if that's applicable anymore.

I mean, they do what they have to do to stay open (and subsidise your ticket price). Ads are annoying for sure, but just get there a bit later and you'll be fine. Some chains here even have separate session and feature start times, so you know when to actually turn up.

Aren't Cineworld's ticket prices ridiculously cheap though? (plus they need all the money they can get)
As usual, it's not really a black and white issue, and it depends on the level of ads, the cost, what people expect and what people signed up for.
If I've paid for an ad-free service and they suddenly start sticking ads on there then I'd probably be rather annoyed. But if I've chosen a service that is free or has a lower cost due to having ads then that's what I've signed up for.
If it's a choice between ad-free cinemas and lower ticket prices, I'd almost certainly choose lower ticket prices... unless they're running a ridiculous number of ads.
It'd also depend what I'm watching. Something like Friends or Love Island or whatever doesn't really matter if it gets interrupted by ads, but something very reliant on atmosphere or tension might.
I'd be interested in things like the Netflix/Hulu reduced-price ad-supported models.
Of the 4 totally free ad-supported services I've tried recently (Plex, PlutoTV, Freevee and Tubi) the first two were basically unwatchable because the ads were too frequent and too annoying. The latter two were fine. It's a bit different because I'm not paying, but it shows how important the level of ads can be, and also their placement and length.
A few ads before the show/movie, and ads on the pause screen are fine with me. Ads popping up every 5 minutes... nope.

Cineworld cheap? The one near me is £15 for a normal ticket and £20 for an imax showing.

Ah, maybe I'm mixing it up with Vue? (I'm out of touch with UK cinema chains.) Isn't there one UK chain that's like 5 quid a ticket?

It can depend on where you live as well. £10 for my local Cineworld and they're cheaper elsewhere.
