Errm not meeting expectations is not flopping pretty badly, unless you're after clicks.

I guess flop is a loaded term but it's done worse than Black Adam, wasn't that widely considered a failure? It's not doing numbers that will make the execs happy, that's for sure.

For what they've spent on it, it isn't doing the business.

It had a few things working against it (does anyone really still care the DCEU?, the lead is a total mess, and it's the movie that resets the whole franchise making itself kind of redundant), so hardly surprising it wouldn't be massive.
Black Adam really was crap though so if it's doing worse than that it's a bit of a surprise considering how much the movie has been talked up over the years.

They really should just stop releasing anything until Superman Legacy.
They won't though because $$$

We are also now past the era comic books movies have a divine right to succeed and just make money.

Some of it is general fatigue but I think a lot of it is the general output has been quite mediocre at best with people very familiar with the quippy leads and the usual arc of how these films have been presented. There are just so many now that it's hard to differentiate and they have all bled into one and I guess with no real stakes of why you should care what happens I can see why the "numbers" have dropped off a cliff.

While I enjoyed The Flash it's not exactly surprising that it's not done that well at the box office, I can't see Blue Beetle doing very well either, the trailer makes it look like a long CW pilot rather than a big budget film.
After that it's Aquaman 2 with its own issues but at least it's got Jason Mamoa and people really seem to dig him, there must be a lot of Stargate Atlantis fans like me out there.

Blue Beetle looks really, really low rent. If you go to the DC subreddit I they're starting to get it. Aquaman apparently has been testing awfully.

How much a film does often doesn't have a lot to do with the quality of *that* film, it's often more about the ones that preceded it. So the shit movie will make a ton of money, but then the decent sequel will make nothing.
As people have said, it's in a tough marketing position, and also in a really crowded spot with loads of big movies coming out in a short space of time. I wanna go watch it, but with Mario, Guardians, Spiderverse, Flash, Indy, Transformers all coming out within about 6 weeks, and with the cost of a family trip to the cinema, it's hard to justify going to all of them.
Plus I don't know how much appeal The Flash has outside of comic book fans (though that never stopped MCU movies), multiverse fatigue, and the fact they've marketed it mainly as a Batman movie (soon after a different The Batman movie, and with a Batman that probably mainly appeals to older dudes and won't appeal to kids at all...)

Its completely inconsequential. Its part of a story nobody cares about, centering on a character nobody cares about as seen by all of the promotional material focussing on a septegenarian batman

Well, minus the the elderly Batman. They really should do Batman Beyond, it's a fucking crime it hasn't been done.

Itās a damn shame that the Aronofsky DKR with Clint Eastwood didnāt happen.
For all the theories about strength of property, hero fatigue etc etc, the fact is most if not all of the films are bombing because theyāre shite films.
If Blue Beetle was good - and not in a āShazam/Aquaman not bad if you give it a chance kinda surprisingly goodā but actually legit properly genuinely good - word would get around and people would go and see it.
And maybe it will be. Itās a really fun character in the right hands. But DC have a lot of work to do to get the reset right and itās a strange way to start it off.

Blue Beetle just looks super cheap from the trailers. I for one am glad that Aranofsky never got anywhere near making a batman film although yes some of his ideas filtered into later batman projects.

FWIW Iām very unsure James Gunn is the right man to revitalise DC. It feels like a very similar move to getting Joss Whedon in on Justice League. Still just trying to somehow get some of that Disney magic.

They need someone who can make great films and has a clear vision.
Given how much time theyāve spent putting together their āBibleā, it doesnāt make me think they had a clear plan when they were hired.
Itās hard to get excited until thereās something to see and itās good. They make too many now for me to be excited just because thereāll be a Superman or Batman film, unlike 20 years ago.

They didnāt have a clear plan when they were hired. They didnāt go to DC with a pitch, they were both asked individually if they would be interested, they both individually turned it down, and only took it much later when they could do it as a team. They then set out about building it all up.
Now itās just a case of waiting and seeing how it all pans out. Itās not the slate of stuff that I would expect to build the franchise from - even the obvious characters donāt seem to have the expected base to build from - but Gunn does talk a convincing game at least. He speaks about it on a recent podcast episode of Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. Iām interested in his Superman. Iām less interested in the whole connected universe, but hopefully they do some good stuff, whether you follow it all as connected or not.

Itās been said many times before but I donāt quite understand the obsession with a connected universe. I mean obviously itās a huge money spinner but only if you make it work. Itās a huge money waster if you donāt.
Meanwhile non universe films like Nolan and Reevesā Batmans and Joker have critical acclaim Marvel can only dream of. They win Oscars!
Give Superman to Villeneuve. Give Aquaman to Greta Gerwig. Give Wonder Woman to Alfonso CuarĆ³n.
It would be so much more interesting and I suspect much more successful than continuing and failing to copy Marvel.

The irony is that if they had done a Keaton Batman film first, I think it would have done well. Well.... Better than The Flash anyway.
