I think Pandora being so colourful and Roger Deanish may have had something to do with the escapist appeal too.
Avatar 2 may well be huge, James Cameron is consistent. Although his recent producing projects (which he heavily endorsed PR wise) didn't do much.

I'm going to reserve judgement for now.

It’s a film that I have no idea how or why it was the highest grossing film. That's what I'm talking about, sure the 3D was a revolution for the time that hasn't developed any further, but the story was essentially Dances with Wolves and people seem to have just forgotten about it completely. Hasn’t developed any further…Until Avatar 2 hits. Most of the film is set underwater and Cameron developed underwater motion capture technology especially for it. Add the 3D to something people haven’t seen before and I think it’ll be sensational effects wise. I've still not seen 3D that’s got any better than the original Avatar in IMAX. Not even close. Is anyone interested in it anymore? Yes. Especially once that hype train gets going. Could potentially be the biggest film of all time.

Avatar was ok, but I have zero interest in Avatar 2.
That said, a huge amount of the appeal of the first one was escaping into that beautiful world.. so Cameron couldn't really have picked a better time to make it. I can see a lot of people who've been trapped at home because of Covid etc.. wanting to escape to somewhere like Pandora.
Then again, The Matrix was one of the biggest movies of its time, and Matrix 4 did very badly apparently. So who knows.
The only DC movie I have any interest in is Wonder Woman 3. Or possibly the batgirl movie, but I have no idea what's going on with that.

Isn't the Batgirl one a streaming only one? Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. Still has a vague 2022 release window, so I guess we'll find out more soon.

I'd vaguely heard that, but not paid much attention. That's a dumb choice. I wondered if it was a dual streaming and theater release, or if it was a decision born of Covid that might now be reversed.
Still more interested in Batgirl that any of the Justice League adjacent ones (other than WW)

Didn't even know another Avatar was out next year. But I've never even seen the first one.

I've never understood how Avatar is one of the biggest films of all time. It was average at best. The 3D effects weren't even that special, despite all the hype. Outside of the destruction of the tree, it was the same old pointy nonsense, whilst lots of moments of floating islands didn't seem to use any 3D effect. Perhaps you had to see it in IMAX, but I would still say the rollercoaster ride of Gravity and the more imaginative use of 3D in Hugo were far more interesting uses of the tech. The plot was fine, but really nothing we hadn't seen hundreds of times before and not really told in any unique way. Edit: Kermode says it better - m.youtube.com/watch?v=08FK7WghHSc

I've never understood how Avatar is one of the biggest films of all time. In the words of William Goldman, “Nobody knows anything.” You just can't tell what will resonate with audiences. Avatar 2 is out this year. Avatar 3 is out on 2024. Not sure when 4 and 5 are out but he's already filmed scenes with the child actors for those. That's some serious forward thinking.

The Avatar 3D is still the best I've ever seen. Really don't understand the "3D wasn't all that" take. A few other movies have done it well too - Gravity and Dredd - but Avatar was leagues ahead of everything else at the time.
I like Avatar. I'm looking forward to A2, 3, 4 and 5. I'm expecting cool visuals around the world and creatures. I doubt the stories will win awards but as long as they're entertaining it doesn't matter. My gf also fucking loves the first film and they're genuinely the only films that she's got on her schedule. She reminded me of the release date of A2 last week. Everything else is me saying "x is out now, do you want to see it?"

The hype will build uup again once a trailer is released and they do "The sequel to the former biggest film of all time" narrative.
It will do amazingly well, just not as well as the first.

If I want to watch an animated film set almost entirely underwater, I'm watching The Water Babies. Stay in your lane, Cameron.

Dredd did 3d? Tron Legacy and Oz made good use of 3d, though in the latter case it only really worked for the transition.

Yeah. For most of the movie it wasn't particularly notable but it really emphasized the slo-mo drug effects whenever that was used.

It's also the reason why it looks like crap/full of aliasing on most Blu-ray releases, because of some shitdickery that went on with the 3D cameras.
Even the 4k release barely looks better than the best of the blurays.

Dredd didn't seem to get a 3d release over here. I can see how it might have been cool for the slo-mo bits though.
I think it got about a 1 week release window, where it was in 1 theater in the whole city, and only showing once a day at about 10am. That theater was in the red light district (which is a weird place at 10am) and I was in an empty cinema. Weird experience. I may have been the only person in Japan who watched it. Good movie though.

There was talk of a TV show, but I've been hearing that for ages and it doesn't seem to have appeared. It's now 10 (!!) years later and I'm not sure Olivia Thirlby is going to pass as a fresh rookie anymore

It's a shame that Rebellion couldn't seem to get the funding together to make their series. I don't understand how Netflix hasn't thrown money hats at it, when they will fund any old shit, particularly nostalgia-heavy Gen X stuff.

Just grabbed the complete Batman Animated Series on iTunes for £25, which is a bit of a bargain.

My niece has gotten into it.
Hasn't aged well and its funny how just about every episode makes Batman look reckless/weak and at times dumb.

I have the entire series from long ago.
I still love the aesthetic, but I've tried a few times to get my kids into it and they find it a bit dull. It's definitely a lot more serious and less hyperactive than most modern kids cartoons. Not 100% sure on the depiction of women either, although you could argue that it's fitting with the 50s aesthetic.
Not sure I ever watched Mask of the Phantasm. I watched a couple of other spin-off movies, including the Harley Quinn one, and they were ok. ish.
Even way back before Arkham Asylum, I always wanted an open world Gotham game in the aesthetic of The Animated Series.

I hated that Batman & Harley Quinn movie, but if you enjoyed the original series, I'd absolutely recommend Mask of the Phantasm, as well as Return of the Joker, which is both a BtAS and Batman Beyond film.
