2023 and EGX is so dead or didn't even get a comment about it until it's third day.
Anyone going tomorrow?

I didn't even know it was still happening and I was on Eurogamer yesterday First I saw of it even on the site was on a footnote on the article about Super Mario Bros. Wonder leaking online...

It would probably be more exciting if any games were even being made. I imagine half of the show floor is on GamePass, FFS. This generation is so fucking weird.

I went yesterday. We used to go regularly, but this was the first time since Covid hit. Was nice to go back to doing it, but tbh the day is more about catching up with mates and food than the games.
Saying that, I was happy to try out the P3 remake and sat in on a talk from Sam Lake about Alan Wake 2. Most time was spent in the retro area!

I had plans to go. And then did nothing about getting a ticket. And now other things have cropped up... Maybe next year.

I took my boys (9 and 11) , they enjoyed last years but they were pretty bored after an hour so we ended up going to London dungeons . My eldest won a headset at least but it’s a shame I can’t see events like this ever getting back to how they once were .
Covid is obviously a factor but I think it’s also a few other reasons

I think the biggest thing it isn't really getting big exclusives like back in the day couple that with how the main site does quite a piss poor job of advertising its own event like it's embarrassed to be associated with it. This all coming from a parent company that specialises in err events.

First I saw of it even on the site was on a footnote on the article about Super Mario Bros. Wonder leaking online... Just went to read that article, as didn't know Wonder had leaked. Is that article completely broken unless you enable comments or is it supposed to look like that?? It mostly just seems to be completely random twitter comments. Edit - and by enable comments, I of course meant enable cookies.

Is that article completely broken unless you enable comments or is it supposed to look like that?? It mostly just seems to be completely random twitter comments. I can't speak for what you're seeing but the article is 5% the actual issue, 75% copy/pasted Reddit comments, 10% a Twitter post, 9% an excerpt of their "fab" preview of the game and 1% plugging EGX, soo...

I mean, hats off to whoever realised the brand synergy there, though.

If they wanted to make the Expo more visible they could have started by advertising it a bit more than just with one sentence-long footnotes in random articles...

My last Expo was 2019 and I had a good time all four days*, that was probably the last time it wasn't a shadow of its former self. Not been tempted to return to it post COVID, geting con flu was always a hazard before there was a potentially deadly variant.
The exhibitors seem to have really dropped off too, I remember Sony having a big stand in 2019 with the PlayStation Access team doing a lot of events this year the only mention I saw of it from them was Rosie saying she was visiting on a single day.
*the Saturday coincided with a big protest against Brexit, so I popped along, the Commons were actually sitting. The vote to force MPs getting a vote on the deal got a big cheer from the crowd, not that it made a huge amount of difference in the end. One of the people on stage that day? Our next PM hopefully, Kier Starmer.

Did anyone attend the one where Dale got all pissy about splitting the bill in the curry house?

I was at that one, fortunately the other end of the table so mostly missed the "drama", expo curry nights were usually a lot of fun.
Earl's Court closing down rather buggered up expo for the social side of things.

We went yesterday, took my 11 year old. He enjoyed playing a few indies, but I was very underwhelmed.
Played Mario Wonder (out this week) which was Nintendo's only game there, didn't queue for Sonic (out tomorrow).
The retro area was well setup with some oddities - got to play Tempest on a Nuon DVD player - and they had a surprising amount of old arcades in respectable condition. There was some fun stuff in the Leftfield area which kept us busy for 30 minutes, and some interesting concepts with custom controllers which ticked off another half hour.
Really though, it's an embarrassing showing. The boy played through a couple of 15 minute demos, but considering we spent £90 for the three of us it's terrible value for money, and we won't be going back.

I still think the demand is there for games expos from gamers. You can only look to comic cons that are heaving.. I think it's that developers/publishers don't want to spend the money on showcasing their games, and I can't see it changing.

I remember being in Nodnol for a EG meetup a good number of years ago, there was a red-hot curry meet in Brick Lane then. Checking on flickr, it was Feb 2009 - flickr.com/photos/motti82/albums/72157614311824202Other than that, there was a Manchester meet in Feb 2008 in the Knott Bar.

Played Mario Wonder (out this week) Oh, I had it in my head that this (and Spider-Man 2) were out next week! That's good. I had better crack on with my Miles Morales replay! Never been to an expo. I did get tickets for me and friend to go to the boardgaming expo in Birmingham... and then COVID struck. I would be interested in going to a video game one too. Playing some early demos would be fun, but would likely be more interested in the dev talks and shows. I suppose developers just don't want to put the effort into these things now, for a fairly limited return. Creating demos is a big task and they have mostly disappeared for general releases on big titles, let alone at game shows. They want to control the narrative of the marketing too much now and wouldn't want the public having hands-on experience unless they are certain it isn't going to put people off. Indies are more likely to want to get the word of mouth going, but that isn't going to get the people through the door.

If that's what you're in to, Develop is where you want to blag invites too. Usually industry only though.

Expos are still popular and draw numbers just not ones like the EG one which are positioned at a time when games are out or just about to come out like a week to 3 weeks time plus EG doesn't really have the big pull like it use to and COVID definitely changed the dynamics of the publisher consumer relationship. I mean yeah they got Sam Lake from Remedy to come but you're not going to get a dev do exclusive stuff at an expo any more.

The last time I went I got criticised by a guy for playing a board game wrong. They also have deodorant stations for them smelly nerds. Beautiful.

It didn't feel very busy, we queued for about 5 minutes to play Mario (waiting for a pod with more than 2 controllers), and for the indie games it was generally a case of just stand behind someone playing and wait for them to finish. The only thing we queued more than 10 minutes for was a bendy pool table
