I thought it had been well received, is that not the case?
I am not plugged into zeitgeist these day.

Ripley 9/10
Shot entirely in b&w, this is a masterclass in tense, noir drama with Andrew Scott doing proper justice to the rôle. It’s slow at times but never dull, they just give the story time to breathe. Really highly recommended

Ooh good to hear, I was always a bit underwhelmed by the Matt Damon version

It hasn't been well received by the CCP Also, back in 2020 when this was announced some GOP senators accused Netflix of normalizing the CCP and now that it was released Conservatives used the opening scene to draw parallels with the "cancel culture"; I'm sure Netflix and it's directors are laughing all the way to the bank for the free publicity (not that they needed any, just saying).

Unsubbed. Just haven't been interested in anything they have put out recently. May go Disneyplus.

Gave the first episode of Three Body Problem a go. All a bit vanilla and crap by the looks of it, superportentous scifi bollocks has been way overdone in exactly this way recently (Devs and Dark spring immediately to mind).
I say skip it.

Yeah if it's a Netflix original pretentious sci-fi show that you're after, just head straight to The OA.

We started and finished Baby Reindeer last night, binged the entire limited series in one go. It starts off slow and weird and even though the main guy's comedy routine is fully 'curl and die cringe' for me, Martha being batshit drew me in.
By ep4 though, it takes a very dark turn and in the end I felt sorry for the poor guy.
8.5/10 but viewer discretion advised as it deals with sexual assualt. Not overly visual but from shots and facial expressions it's clear what's happening.

Yeah I'd say the most harrowing part of Baby Reindeer are the stand up scenes.

I actually think the stand up bits being a bit shit worked for the series. There’s nothing worse than seeing a film or tv series with a stand up routine where the audience is pissing themselves laughing and it’s actually Jack Whitehall. But he died on his arse like 99% of the time and he deserved to.

I thought the Three Body Problem had some good/fun ideas but the execution of them was mixed and a little bit corny at times. It was atmospheric though and I enjoyed it overall. I wouldn't recommend taking it too seriously to anyone going in to it.

Honestly, I couldn't help feeling that one of the reasons he didn't report her straight away/became similarly obsessed with her was that it all provided him with content for one of his shows. Cynical I know, but i couldn't shake that notion watching it, especially having known similar types when I was doing drama in London.

But he died on his arse like 99% of the time and he deserved to. I’ve only seen them on Gogglebox but I think it works well that they’re like a surreal cartoon of a dying comic. I’m assuming his actual act is much more conventional and actually funny but it would’ve been a big speedbump for the show if it was regularly cutting to him killing it like it was Seinfeld or something. I think I’d struggle to stay fully in the mindset the rest of the show seems to want from you watching it.

Humor is of course very subjective, but it's been an issue for me with almost every drama that's had some kind of 'stand up' component. If you don't find the standup bits funny it often kinda messes with the pacing and the whole conceit.
Seinfeld, Feel Good, Ms Maisel (though this got better for me after an ep or two), etc..
Not sure about this one though, as it sounds like it's supposed to be pretty dark, so actual funny standups might be weird.

Yeah it would have not worked if his standup bits were actually good, and I assume he was better irl or otherwise htf did he get this far in his career, crazy first hand story or otherwise.
Now we're talking about it tho, I'd be interested in someone playing a really awesome stand up coming with a genuinely fucked up dark real life story going on behind it, in some kind of monkey's paw deal to guarantee fame and future taking a toll somewhere else. This is not that story though and it worked well.

Somewhat relatedly - anytime a film in which a fictional poet, writer or songwriting is supposed to be a world class, once in a generation, talent they’re almost never anything better than average.

Yeah those can be a bit painful. I remember watching the end of School of Rock and thinking they didn’t deserve to win that battle of the bands. Ditto Pitch Perfect.
The one time it worked really well, and for obvious reasons, was in Amadeus. It helped that Salieri was the perfect foil.

Content is hard tho innit? Usually when you're doing a "show within a show" youre either having one of them as a framing device for the "main" show within, or the inner show is handwaved away and made to look good with overdone audience reaction. Actually doing both well is hard and sometimes needs completely different talent sets. (...Murders In the Building's last season is an exception here. The musical, though it was "shit" was actually pretty well executed from the bits you saw)

Only Murders does cheat slightly by having exceptionally classy casting.

They have a trailer to announce the cast list now?
It is a pretty stacked cast though, and it's nice to see the brits taking over again!
Are we gonna have 2 uncle festers??
