I’m coming in cold about the story but I know its got the Gambo producers on board and Obama liked the book. This first episode could be literally any generic Netflix sci-fi series. Not sure if I’ll stick with it.

I'm trying to finish the book first (about 2/3 in) before starting the series, even though the trailer seemingly paints a slightly different story than the one I'm reading...

Same, though I've just read a review that mentions it brings in threads from the later books, so am going to hold off watching until I've read them too. As you say, the trailers make it look like some pretty big changes from the books, bar the cultural revolution stuff, so I'm not sure how much I should be worrying about the series spoiling the books. Throughly enjoying the first one though, so will continue through the next two ahead of watching it.

I got a quarter of the way through the book and gave up on it. The main character is just so utterly fucking dull. The game part of it felt totally far fetched too. Considering it's meant to be hard sci fi, it felt like the workings of that weren't explained at all.

I found the entire thing extremely dull, though that might be just me. I bounce off most hard sci-fi for similar reasons, in that there's a lot of "look at me, look how smart I am" dialogue while forgetting to tell a compelling story with relatable characters.
It also didn't help that the author appears to be a bit of a penis IRL. Though I guess that applies to more than a few sci-fi/fantasy authors, he's not exactly alone in that lol.

I thought the book was ok, but it didn't really grab me and seemed kinda dry at times. The stuff about the cultural revolution was interesting, purely because I didn't know about that. The stuff with the actual 3 Body Problem seemed interesting at first, but also seemed to get less and less interesting as more was revealed, to the point the the ending was kinda boring.
PS/ I dunno about the later books, but I don't see why the first one would be 'unfilmable'. I don't think the GoT novels were ever considered that unfilmable, were they?

Dead Boy Detectives will apparently be premiering on April 25th. Shared universe with The Sandman.

Well, 3 body problem, two episodes in, I am intrigued.
I will hang around till it inevitably shits the bed.

Knowing very little about the book, 3 Body Problem is continuing to entertain. Episode 5 had a fun, but fairly grisly scene, and the fact that it doesn't have a massively lengthy title sequence that you need to keep skipping past makes it a decent enough watch. I'm guessing we'll be left on a clifhanger and be in for a years wait at the end of it though.

I've struggled with 3 Body Problem - I mean struggled to find much of it plausible. I really wanted to enjoy it but have found it a load of bobbins really. I'm unfamiliar with the source material but was hoping for something more believable (which I guess is my own fault). I don't know what the common consensus of it is, but I've been enjoy the recent remake of the Last Air Bender more (I was fond of the cartoon though).

For sure, it's all mumbo jumbo, but I've just recently observed bits of (not watched) Monarch Legacy of Monsters, and compared to that, this is far superior. It's also got a nice British vibe which makes a change.

BeetrootBertie - That was my issue with the book, which makes me laugh when I see a review calling it "the hardest of hard sci-fi". My bollocks it is!

Look, 3BP is probably above most people. It's OK if you don't get it.

Isn't 3BP basically the embodiment of "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" - Arthur C. Clarke or maybe "Any sufficiently hard sci-fi is indistinguishable from magic"

When I hear the phrase "hard sci-fi" it just makes me think of that douchey nerd character from Party Down.

Ep 5 Judgement Day probably embodies that statement more than anything. That was both an extremely creative idea realised in action while simultaneously being grim as fuck.

I enjoyed 3 Body Problem.
It was a fairly ponderous watch, with relatively few big action set pieces, but the concepts it deals with are quite big in concept, and it does a good job at making some grand sci-fi concepts and musings quite accessible.
I like the characters and cast. At the same time it's not something I'd necessarily want to rewatch, but I really hope the story can be finished.

At the opposite end of things if your kids like the silent slapstick of Grizz & The Lemmings but wish it had more toilet humour and dinosaurs in it my 5 yr old has been in pieces watching that new Bad Dinosaur show.

Started watching the remake of The Wages of Fear.
Original is a gripping classic, so bring to it some modern day visuals and keep the tension, how could they feck it up?
This is how. Rubbish

Homicide: New York 8/10 Burned through the 5 eps of this well made true crime series just released. When it is done well, just having the detectives relay their unvarnished experience works for me.
This is on the same level as Catching Killers, if this subject matter floats your boat.
90% of Netflix true crime I turn off within 10 mins, it's so bad, not these two, hope they make more.

Copied over from the Watching thread: Ripley the mini-series of Patricia Highsmith’s novel has been excellent so far. Andrew Scott plays the lead role with good support It’s shot entirely in black and white but we binged the first half and it’s ace.

Very disappointed to discover that Ripley is not an Alien spin off.

3 body problem 8/10 Yeah, enjoyed that, lost me in the sciency bits around the middle, but well acted, decent writing and great production values.
I am up for more if Netflix aren't twats about it.
