Death’s Door
More like “deathly bore”. It looks and sounds the part, but I’m tired of oscillating between feeling bored and lost. Mediocre combat, barebones character progression, labyrinthine design, yet no map. I dislike it very much, regret my purchase, and shall now punch myself in the face. Good day.

It took a few hours for Death's Door to grab me, but when it did it never let go. I have it pencilled in for a hard mode replay some day. Definitely worth sticking with - the "been here before, seen this before, it's nothing special" feeling wears off and it reveals something pretty close to a classic.

Yeah, DD starts kinda slowly but it eventually grabs you. I think it was somewhere around the Witch's Manor for me.
The starting area doesn't really do it any favors, the colors are pretty drab and the paths all look the same.

It's silly, but after about 40 hours I have finally given up on Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. I don't hate it or anything like that, but trying to push on wasn't something I really wanted to do. At this point, whenever I think of having to continue with it, I just feel disinterest. As said, there are some rather cool aspects to the game, like how character weight and height are actually relevant for physics and some stats (like Stamina), but the environments I found during exploration were mostly uninteresting with way too much rummaging through barrels and chests and other interactable places. Then when I get back to town I have to spend time crafting, selling off stuff or storing it and so on. And all of that with a rather clunky hard to read UI that takes too many actions to interact with. Story and characters were mostly uninteresting and the character building system is ok, but nothing that really makes me obsess about my character or makes me think about what other characters I might make for a potential replay. Most of the levelling happens automatically anyway and a lot of the information that might be interesting is spread out across too many tabs with info that is only partially displayed and the scroll wheel doesn't work. The menu system makes everything feel and look worse than it is.
There are more aspects to DD:DA that I like and that may be considered objective positives, but in the end the whole thing doesn't come together in a way that actually is fun for me. It just feels so very, very mediocre most of the time.

Cyberpunk, again. Almost a year to the day when I last abandoned it.

I think I'm abandoning Stephen's Sausage Roll. It's just becoming increasingly frustrating. While I like a good logic puzzle, spending over an hour on a single puzzle without a iota of progress isn't fun to me. The meek satisfaction in solving a puzzle is increasingly at odds with all the time and effort I invest in solving it.
Great game, but I have to be honest with myself and realise it's a little too much for me.

Also abandoned the Blasphemous demo. Combat didn't convince me, maybe that gets better later, but most of all theme and setting didn't do anything for me. And from what I hear, it seems that if you don't like its setting and theme in the first place, maybe it's not the game for you.

RadicalRex That's a pity on both counts. SSR was supremely satisfying for me to solve throughout, even if I was stuck on a puzzle for days on end. I had to rubber duck solutions multiple times but I got to the end mostly independently, which is more than I can say for e.g. Baba Is You. Which part are you stuck on at the moment? There were definitely stretches for me that were more brutal than others. As for Blasphemous, if it hasn't won you over yet, I think it never will. You get some more flexibility in terms of combat the further you get into the game but it never stops being mainly hitting things with your sword. I personally enjoyed it a lot but it's right on that edge where the gameplay will either be a challenge to rise up to or intolerable bullshit, depending on the person.

LTK I played SSR a little further, after looking up a video on the one I was stuck at again, to find out there's a "technique" I didn't realise was possible (I generally stop the video there to figure out the rest of the puzzle on my own). Following that, there were a few puzzles again that I enjoyed a lot--all of which required some good thinking but were relatively brief once I figured it out. I mean, the puzzles are incredibly clever. And then comes another one of those marathon puzzles that require a million moves, and it feels like a horrible grind to me. I noticed that I have very little tolerance for grinding in any game, that really puts me off. What makes it worse in this game is that a lot of the time I may have made some irreparable mistake early on and have to start all over again. And again. And again. That's those times when I'm really not enjoying it. It's kind of a rollercoaster, it goes up and down a lot between great joy and sheer frustration. I believe I'm not giving up on it yet, but sometimes I just hate it. Around the middle mark btw, 115 sausages or somesuch.

Aha, realizing that there's a new technique required to solve it is always tricky, but it's a great feeling when the possibility space opens up like that. I think you have a few surprises left, so stick with it!
Also, if you need a hint, there's always the puzzle thread.

Metal Arms for Xbox
Picked it up on the marketplace with some reward points, because I noticed reviews calling it an unsung classic of the PS2 era, and wanted to see for myself. Bad mistake.
For one, while the Xbox version apparently was 60fps, on Xbox 360 it runs at 30fps at the best of times, quickly dropping to "worse than Turok 2" levels of performance during fights, and that's being generous. So that already makes it pretty unplayable on the platform. But even if it ran well, I doubt it would be any fun. As far as third person shooters go, it seems pretty mediocre. The biggest issue is that your basic laser is terribly underpowered and takes ages to reload. Your other weapons fare only slightly better, and chew through ammo way too quickly to be reliable. There is also very little directions in levels, so you end up getting lost easily. Oh, and the robots' high-pitched shrieks get annoying very fast.
Its age doesn't have to be an issue. If I had to make a comparison, I'd say MDK2 craps all over this from a great height.
Luckily it was just reward points, because I can't keep playing to see if it gets any better. The framerate is giving me motion sickness. But somehow I doubt it anyway.

Not played for weeks so can safely say I have officially abandoned Code Vein.
Should have trusted my instincts. There was a point early on that it did actually get quite good but on and on it goes with cutscene after cutscene following large non-descript maze-like levels with identikit enemies with almost no hit feedback.
Possibly the worst souls-like I've played and the only one that I've not seen through to the end.
Utter fucking garbage.

I'm sure From will look at how others have built on their work and incorporate innovative features like that into Elden Ring. This time make sure you move the slider all the way up to fun bags

Talking of Souls-likes, I do notice the only other one I haven't played yet, Ashen, is on sale currently.
Hmmmmm.

The only other one? So you've played Hellpoint, Mortal Shell, The Surge 1 and 2, and even Immortal Unchained?

Blasphemous is worth a shout. Some people like Salt & Sanctuary
I rarely get on with 'games like games' games. Apart from Nioh, which I'd say is more inspired by and distinguishes itself, they're just poor imitations. I don't think you can boil Dark Souls down to just its gameplay or any one thing, it's a lot of different things that come together that makes them so good

Played and finished so far (apart from Boobs Vein): Demon's Souls original + remake Dark Souls Dark Souls 2 (original release) Dark Souls 2: SotFS Dark Souls 3 Bloodborne Sekiro Hellpoint Mortal Shell Nioh 1&2 Boobs Vein Lords of the Fallen The Surge 1&2 Blasphemous Salt and Sanctuary Hollow Knight Titan Souls Remnant from the Ashes Probably the odd other one. Re:Immortal Unchained. Its not available digitally any more but I've considered grabbing the physical copy more than once so I probably will eventually.

Remnant from the Ashes is a Souls-like? Why did I think it was a co-op shooter?

@wuntyate Ashen is very good. It’s a Souls-light *screaming* in that it’s not overly challenging but still provides a good mix of exploration, gorgeous environments, and all the usual mechanics. The bosses, with the exception of the final boss, are quite easy; the weakest part is probably the weapons are a bit limited in variety and function, but still ok. I’ve played most of the ones on your list and I enjoyed it (not a guarantee).

To be honest some on my list are stretching souls likes and so are the ones you've mentioned. It's not to say I won't try them but for example I didn't get on with curse of the Dead gods. I looked at ender lilies but didn't fancy it. Are the others worth looking at? Don't think I've heard of them.
