Probably. But I think the opposition is still smarting from the complete fucking disaster that their last government was, so hopefully the grown ups can be in charge for a while yet.

Putin and Xi Jinping are meeting right now in Moscow. Winnie the Pooh just said that he intends to increase military ties between Russia and China.
Is China going to bail them out? I didn't think they would be interested in doing that.

All the buzz here in Italy nowadays is about the new Italian PM's main tenet (unsurprisingly, it seems to be her end-game) of wanting to turn our government into pretty much the USA. Putting most of the power in the hands of the president, and making him unassailable by the parliament. Some think the French system would be better, but she does seem to consider it merely a compromise, and would rather have the USA system.
Not sure how good it would be, after all obstructionism has long been a big problem in Italian politics and the main reason why we can't get a government to stay in power long enough to do anything. So a bit of change and some more centralization of power might be a good idea indeed. But it doesn't bode well in this one case. After all, we're talking about a government that is specifically ignoring a judge's order (regarding the indication of the parents a "mother" and "father" on a child's ID card, which would be an obvious false statement for adopted children of gay couples) because "it only applied to that specific case, and if people don't like it, they can just sue us like those guys did".

January seems to be the month for insurrections when a right wing arsehole loses his job.

How polite of them to wait two days so that it didn't clash with their 'Murican colleagues' work.

I wonder why the police never seems to intervene in these situations, you'd think these guys could use a few rubber bullets in the eyes.

Probaby safer just to let the idiots incriminate themselves, then pick them up from video footage later. The Army "shock troops" arrived at some point. They were cheered, as they expected they were going to join in and takeover, Brazilian-style...

Or at the very least, more willing to turn a blind eye to them than you'd expect. America is hardly the only country with bad apples in the force...

Just saw a clip of the Macron interview, but cannot find the full thing. The little that I saw was one of the nicest things I have seen. He was charming and effortless. For those that haven’t seen or heard about it, Macron agreed to be interviewed by a group of autistic reporters. And they simply ask what they want, and speak their minds to his answers. But it was lovely and refreshingly honest. If any one has a link to the full thing, please share.

Think you need an account and a French IP to watch it though.

Jacinda Ardern to step down as NZ PM by 7th February. Not surprising, Labour will almost certainly lose the election in November, and she's been subject to an ever-increasing amount of the most appalling abuse.

Eh? I thought she was super popular! She was during the first part of the pandemic. Since then opposition parties have engaged in the politics of hindsight, and mobilised peoples' short memories to retcon her response to the pandemic as a draconian overreaction. Then there's the influence of conspiracy theorists and their paymasters. There was always a nascent hatred of her in middle NZ, largely because she's a woman, and a relatively young one at that. Much criticism of her drips with misogyny. She's not perfect by any stretch. Arguably Labour have squandered their majority government, a golden opportunity to reshape NZ. Though, in fairness to her the parliamentary party is hardly stacked with talented MPs ready to be dynamic ministers. I firmly believe history will judge her very well. NZ COVID deaths (most restrictions lifted from February 2022) - 01/20-01/22 - 53
- 02/22-01/23 - 2437
Bearing in mind that although we did have several months of strict lockdowns on and off between 2020-22, most of that time life was completely normal in NZ. In August 2020 I was going to the pub, gigs etc. I wonder if Gammonbanter will return to tell me how shit it was in NZ during that time...

Anyway, I look forward to our next PM, Christopher Luxon, a coddled dimwit who has never faced a consequence in his life. His coalition partner will be David Seymour, a 'libertarian' who mobilises single-issue voters to gain seats so he can push 'common sense' policies on behalf of his ultra-rich puppeteers.

Damn, that surprises me, I thought she'd been the most popular, successful leader in years. Though tbf I don't really follow NZ politics much.

Wow, that's a surprise. Fair play on making that decision.
As Wink says she got horrific abuse from day one, a lot of it misogynistic or directed towards her appearance. There's a big chunk of the country that believe's PM is a job for a middle aged white man.
It was the covid policies really amped up the crazies and the hate though, you look at fuckwits like Dan Wootton and they'll call her the worst Prime Minister ever, always waffling on about vaccine mandates and other anti-vaxx nonsense. There is a pretty hardcore anti-vaxx crowd in NZ, a very confused and idiotic movement, a mix of idiots, religious nutters and conspiracy theorists. All the right wing posts slagging her off are filled with that crowd, all talking about Davos conspiracies, vaccine deaths or her resignation being suspicious "something bigger being afoot".
Fuck dealing with all that noise. Hopefully she'll go on to more rewarding roles internationally.

If you have to step down that is fine and admirable. But I am in awe of professionals who are able to drop their jobs immediately or with little notice. When the cabinet abandoned their roles around Johnson was another example! How is it I have to give 6 weeks notice but top tier government ministers can give little to none?

But you get extra payouts to adjust to normal life as well as keeping all your pension benefits etc politicians don’t.
Have I got that the right way around?

I'm sure spontaneous combustion is a common occurrence, just not widely reported.
