Why did Germany stop nuclear? Of all the countries that should do nuclear, Germany is most trustworthy. It's been very unpopular in Germany since the 80s and in particular after Chernobyl, and it has been here in the Nordics as well. They already had plans to shut down nuclear as soon as they could, and then Fukushima happened and they basically rammed it through and accelerated everything.
Germany was in the path of fallout from Chernobyl as it traveled from Ukraine over Belarus and over Scandinavia. We weren't disastrously affected and it's not a great rational argument against nuclear power, but for those of us who grew up seeing daily radiation measurements following the news for over a decade (it was an extra little segment after the weather forecast) and had limits on eating certain kinds of foods (wild meat, fish, berries, mushrooms) I think the consequences of nuclear disasters felt a bit more real and present. It's one of the first big news events I remember and even though I was 4 years old I remember how scary it was at first because nobody knew what had happened and the Soviet Union was denying everything.
So I can understand why it's been unpopular on that sort of immediate emotional level, but pushing through a shutdown and moving to alternatives that are worse in every way was dumb.

On a side note, say open war actually does break out, wouldn't a nuclear power plant be a prime target for bombing? Sounds dangerous.
Still, in times of peace, I would be all for nuclear. Not so sure at the moment, though.
Anyway, looking at how things are going in the Baltic area, I have no idea if all this circling around the issue will be of any use in the end. People want to avoid riling up Putin but it's starting to look a bit difficult.

Just a bit further on the depressing result of the French legislative elections last weekend: seen the likes of Owen Jones and even Bernie Sanders in the US peddling this disingenuous narrative. It really is face-scrappingly infuriating how fractious politics on the left has become, and the ideological purity proselytized by the likes of Jones and Sanders does nobody any favours.
[Also, just for what it's worth, official polling data confirms that Macron's 'centrists' abstained less, voted in more numbers for the NUPES where applicable, and gave less support to Le Pen across the board than did their holier-than-though, anti-EU, disband NATO, Putin supporting 'the West is the real enemy', leftist counterparts, whom Jones champions. But, hey, lets not let facts get in the way of a good centrist melt, go support the Tories rant.]

Link to the relevant data points here, as given in response to Jones' tweet:

I don't even see the words "Owen Jones" anymore. They just appear as "cunt". I didn't know of him til maybe a year or 2 ago, as I don't read Guardian or newspapers. My dislike was fairly instantaneous

Dgzter become? Twas ever thus. It's the curse of the left to never be able to get it together when it matters because it's far too important to be exactly right about whose notion of socialism is correct. See for example, Deggsy and Militant. Or just Militant. Or the SLP in the mid 90s.

I think we will see a momentary rise in fossil fuel use but this war and the fuel crisis it’s helped bring about are going to push people towards renewables and EVs at a pace no amount of appealing to people to not destroy the planet could ever hope to achieve

Each week the fossil fuels have gone up that little bit more pushing me that bit more to finding an EV. And their will be many many people thinking the same, "lets find a way to buy one NOW".

Looking at the declaration it's basically some uncontroversial stuff (lifting bans on arms sales) and some friendly words that don't really say anything concrete. Like "stop supporting YPG" which, considering we never did is going to be really easy to implement. The bits about changing laws seem to refer to updating of anti terror laws in Sweden and Finland that were decided before all this kicked off and come into force this summer. Extraditions will still be decided by the courts.
Will be interesting to see if and what they got under the table from the US.

I was worried they'd had to agree to something dodgy to get the deal through, so hopefully you're right that they didn't have to give away too much.

Well, that's how it will be interpreted here and both the Swedish and Finnish governments have said there are no legal changes planned and that extraditions will be up to the courts. Turkey might feel differently when it comes time to vote, and Erdogan might need another show at home, so who knows. We might end up in the same situation again in a couple of months.

Weird that a billionaire who continually sold his sport to the highest bidder regardless of morality would think Putin is a good bloke.
I bet Sepp Blatter was on his christmas card list, too.

Turkey might feel differently when it comes time to vote ...or maybe we won't have to wait that long. Erdogan now claims (Swedish link) that our government has promised to extradite 73 people, which is not something that's in their power to make promises about. Last time something like this was done (extradition of two egyptians at the behest of the CIA shortly after 9/11) it became one of the biggest scandals in the last 50 years, so if they've made preemptive promises to intervene and try to circumvent the normal process to please Turkey it'll be political suicide. Government and ministers are absolutely not allowed to interfere with individual cases or the normal workings of agencies and the legal system, nor are we in a dire national security situation that would even morally justify it.
So yeah, it might not have moved forward after all, or in a worst case scenario I might have to go to Stockholm and punch some fools.

If you wanted to reduce the number of economic/political refugees coming to your country, saying you'll freely extradite them wherever might be a better deterrent than a holiday in Rwanda.

You just reminded me that Tim Roth played Sepp Blatter in a movie about his life. That would be United Passions. (0% on Rotten Tomatoes) To be fair to Roth, he did admit that he did it for the money and regrets it.

Just read up about it. It was about Seb Blatter fighting corruption and saving FIFA and was released during the height of the Seb Blatter corruption scandal.
That isbjust brilliant.
