I've been playing my boys drumkit a bit too much this weekend. I've decided I'm a drummer now. Turns out I'm not awful at it and it's far more enjoyable than I would ever have imagined. There's a load of preset accompanyments in different styles and I just cycle through them jamming along with different beats.
He got it for christmas from my parents, who spoil him. I have warned him if he continues to not use it I absolutely will nick it off him and squirrel it away in my music den upstairs. Kind of hoping he doesn't use it.
Hah, like I've got time to learn the fucking drums as well.

Broken Washburn on the right. I've had a look at the electrics and it looks like they were fiddled with at some point. Shorts everywhere, although all the connections seem solid. Can't get to the pickups themselves without removing the trem and maybe the neck? Too much for me and not worth paying to have a pro repair. With the new one coming, I might just put it up for "spares or repair" and see if I can get a few quid for it (like £25 or something). I can't imagine they're highly sought after. guitar electrics are pretty simple, post a picture of the control cavity and see if we can deduce the problem. Might be wiring faults or a broken switch, doubtful that the pickups are at fault

Not to hijack Dogbot's problem and only if you have time elstoof but would you be able to advise a little on an earthing problem I seem to have with my jazzmaster?
Dogbot first, obvs, and only if it's not too cheeky, but you obviously know about this shit.

I have a Tech21 Trademark 60 amp this end with a seriously bad crackling / popping pots situation.... if I try and turn the level up, there is faint and cracking sound, then all of a sudden it'll blare out properly. I can barely find a volume low enough to practice at home anymore. I've tried spraying contact cleaner under the knobs but no luck. How "easy" is it to take sold state amps like this apart and get right to the electronics, or should I be getting a pro to take a look?

There’s nothing immediately obviously wrong with the wiring tbh, could be a knackered pot or failed solder connection

Opening amps can be pretty deadly if you don’t know what you’re doing, capacitors will hold enough voltage to kill for a pretty long time so you don’t want to accidentally become a bridge to earth for that current. A faulty pot is a dead easy fix though, can be replaced in a few minutes by someone with experience

I'm not beyond doing a bit of soldering but identifying what needs to be done is a different story. I'm torn between having a go and seeing if I can get it working and the idea that I might just make it worse.

What’s the earth problem you’ve got aunty wunty I've got a VERY crackly jazzmaster (guitar, not bass). I think I'm right that they should earth at the bridge, but I really have not got a clue. It's not the pots as it crackles with me essentially having my hand near the p'ups. I know they are sensitive anyway but seem incredibly so.

Fenders usually have sn earth wire trapped under the bridge plate to ground the strings, you’ll know if that’s failed as you’ll constantly have wild sounds. Single coils are inherently prone to noise, does it only do it when your hand is near the pickups? What about when you hold the strings gently? Do you wear a watch on your picking hand? What sort of power source is the amp using, if there’s lamps on the same ring then that can give you weird noises

Near the pickups, while I'm playing and while my hand is near. I don't wear a watch on that hand and the watch I have on the fretting hand is a Garmin with a rubber strap if that helps. Amp is a tricky one as it happens with the Fender Vaporizer, the Boss Katana AND when I plug it into my Roland Rubix interface. So it's like a constant crackle. In fact, you know what, even if I knock the body it does it. It's not the input jack I know that much as well as that doesn't exacerbate it if I plug in / out etc.

If it’s making no sound at all then I’d say it’s a broken pot, it’s unlikely that all the pickups have failed. If you’re ok with soldering I’d try replacing the pots, can’t make it any worse right. it’s not that difficult just take a photo of the current wiring and put it back the same way. Even good quality pots aren’t too expensive, CTS or Alphas are about 6 quid each. I’ve probably got some spares knocking about if it’s got 250k in there currently

elstoof - I'll consider it. It looks like there might be a couple of wires - the white ones on the right hand connection (red wire) on the switch and the top grey wire on the left hand pot - which are just wrapped around the other (soldered) wires, which seems like it'd be a prime place to start. Meanwhile...

Ooh nice, which model is that? I had one of the new Standard 50s models a year or so ago, but had to send it back due to uneven frets. I didn't get another but kind of miss it a bit. Nice guitar other than the bad fret.

Nice guitar other than the bad fret. It's an Epiphone Slash Standard. I couldn't justify the cost of the Gibson and it probably wouldn't have made much of a difference at my level of playing. Ooooh nice. Love it. Had a chance to play it yet? Yeah, tuned it and had a brief go. As with all brand new guitars, it's got rubbish strings on, but it's got a nice C-profile to the neck (sort of halfway between my skinny Framus and my hefty acoustics). Initial reaction is very favourable. It's weighty, but not as weighty as some LPs, despite being mahogany body and neck. Frets feel nice and the action is typically LP.

@wuntyate is that custom hardware on the strat? Nut & bridge look... different... Also, not a fan of tremolos? Love the Jazzmaster, probably my second favourite electric body style, that and the Jag. Hence why I have a faux one. (Also, can we ever have enough pictures of guitars? Even standing still, unplayed, they are wonderful things...)
