Are things any more stable?

I jammed with a mate on guitar and his mate on drums in a local practice room last night. Great fun - we played Pixies - Where Is My Mind, Brian Jonestown Massacre - Anemone and White Stripes - Hardest Button to Button. I struggled to hear my bass a bit as I didn't have my amp, so was just plugged into the PA (via a cheapo pre-amp pedal). If I turned up the level to where I was easily heard, it was quite farty. Is that just because the PA/speaker wasn't powerful enough?

Not really. Leader is still up and down. Didn't practice on tuesday either. Him and his missus came to mine instead for a beer + listen to the previous fridays tracks.
Will see how it goes tonight with all 4 of us.
It's almost bi-polar - never know what you're going to get. Though Friday's are normally good.
That's a point - can you link stuff on here? I mean, like with a neat hyperlink, as opposed to a massive URL. Ooo, wonder if you can embed stuff too

At a normal volume (i.e., loud), you're going to need something that can handle the lower frequencies better

Did you ever meet those other guys again?

Also you don't want to blow the PA. I've eh... Done that before.

Yeah I've got an amp (a 500W beast - sure I posted about it at The Old Place), but not with me as I'm staying at the in-laws at the moment. I just thought pre-amp into PA was quite a normal solution now and that bassists were starting to move away from amps for live performance.

@quad hopefully you have a good session tonight and he settles down a bit man. I have no idea how to link stuff.
Shit you know what? I never listened to those tracks you posted the other week, what a fanny. If you can find a way of reposting them here. I really want to hear them, I'm just a forgetful twat.

We're still in touch loosely but I've been away from home for 3 weeks (the far end of the country) and am not back for another week. Hoping they won't have forgotten about me / found someone with some talent.

Re:PA yeah that sounds right and I've certainly played through a venue's pa more often than not. So long as its up to the task itll be your pre amp that's bringing the farts I assume.

I dunno, it's cheap but apparently well thought of (Behringer BDI 21, it's a clone of some pretty good SansAmp pedal I understand). Could equally have been my complete lack of experience and understanding of bass tone and EQ etc.

How do you set your volume, out of interest?
On mine for example, I always have the volume on full on the bass itself, and then on the amp, there is a gain and a master volume. I have the gain on about 5 and the master volume on full.
What options do you have with your setup?

@quad Awesome man. I'll make sure I listen to them later!
Re: Volumes. I always have the volume full on my bass, otherwise it's not giving it's full output. Then I set my gain to how I like, then finally my master volume. The only thing I then tweak is my master volume.
Either that or just have it all full and fuck the rest of them.

I don't think the Behringer will be on a par if I'm honest, although I know the reputation of some things doing a good job as more expensive gear, my experience has never been that. If it's a temporary arrangement I would probably just put up with the farting knowing that it's not your ideal setup anyway. I also know fuck all about the gear I have though tbh and generally just do what I'm told. I like playing, not pissing about with nobs.

Yeah had volume on the bass on full. On the pedal I tried the gain in various positions, and went up to about probably 7/10 on the level (master). On the PA I was at about 7/10 on the level. Any more than that on either the pedal or the PA and it just got too raspberry-y. Ah well, I'll have my beast of an amp most times I guess.

These are pretty damn good quaddy. Really like the last one, it's got some emotional oomph. And the way Full Moon kicks off towards the end is great.

Cheers! Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed them.
We really need to get all 8 finished - I'm really wanting it so everyone is happy with their bits and then we can actually use that group of songs to properly share and promote. One day.

quadfather Full Moon is brilliant man, I kind of tuned out to everything else whilst listening to that, great stuff. I love the bass on She Comes Alive as well, totally stuck in my head. Supernatural Love has it's own cool thing going on, love the vibe of this one. It's all very listenable, and really atmospheric. I've said it before but I would love to just go out to a pub and sit and listen to this all evening with a few drinks and call it a bloody good night out. Really good. Hope things settle down and you all get some gigs on the go soon. This will go down really well.

Well last night's practice was super weird.
Everyone was ok, until the ex guitarist turned up randomly out of the blue to ask for some help with a pedal (this was the guy that we ousted ages ago because he couldn't do what we wanted, but we still get on and drink in pub etc). So for some fucking reason, our guitarist said we'll play a tune for him. Didn't really give the guy much choice tbh.
And he chose a song the guy fucking wrote originally! Talk about insensitive. I know we've changed it up a bit but we could have chosen fucking anything.
Anyway, it put me off straight away and fucked up all the chorus etc. And the poor guy just said everything sounds great and made his excuses and left.
I had to have a break at that point for a bit as it threw me for about an hour until I could get my groove back.
Weird night. But at least we all played I guess.

That....is very fucking weird. How awkward. Why the hell did he do that!!

He doesn't have a filter really, because of his mental health situation so he didn't really think about it.
I did say after I'd both fucked it up and the guy had left, "well that was super awkward. He wrote the song!" But the guy wasn't fussed and just shrugged and then we carried on.
People eh. And bands. Band people.

Bloody hell. I've been in bands before where we've played songs for the odd person who has dropped into the studio. It's always awkward anyway, let alone playing a guys own tune back to him.

Yeah. It was. Like I say, it threw me right off. I've never experienced that before - every song after, it was like my brain was empty and I just couldn't remember any of the new couple of songs!
So had a proper smoke outside, necked a whole can and tried again and nailed it.
Weird.
And the drummer left his tascam recorder behind last night, so it'll be another week till we get last night's recordings.
Also, it was Friday the 13th yesterday. Like we need any other omens this year.

Yeah yesterday was a weird day all in really I think. Something in the air definitely.
I've spied a drummer, so I've messaged him. Can't wait for him to either not reply or say he's not interested.
