Looking for some advice.
Currently I mess around on guitar with pedals, including a looper via a practice amp, and an electric piano, that has midi but I don't use it, playing over the loops playing in the background.
I am thinking of getting a synth, probably a korg ms20 mini and setting it up via a pc (or mac) with a usb out to a hifi amp and speakers.
What do I need so I can get everything connected to a computer and what is recommended for sw so I can start recording bits and bobs easy, playing over samples and loops without having a steep learning curve on the sw front? I want to get up and running quickly and it's just for fun and messing around really.
For example I would like to sample a few seconds of a drum track I like from a flac or mp3 of a song from my music library and then record tracks to be played with it, overlaying, to make a song that I can then make into a flac to bore people with.

What would be useful in that setup is an audio interface. Maybe one of the Scarlett Focusrite's - they come in all types of capacity depending how many inputs you need. Plug everything into that (it'll take xlr, normal ts leads, midi, usb, the lot. Then send the output from that to your speakers. Then, if you get some cheap and cheerful sequencing software, it'll talk to the audio interface, so you can record your guitar as 1 track, then some drums for another track, then your synth etc. Layer it all up (it'll quantise it automatically if it's half decent software so it's all in time) and then export it to whatever file format you like. Software wise - well, Ableton can do everything, and you can get the lite version for free nowadays (it normally comes for free when you buy hardware too). But it does have a fairly steep curve and you'll need to watch videos to get your head round it. I've used Mixcraft as well, which is easier to get up and running - you can get a cut down version for under 100 quid, or the full thing for about 200. Might want to double check the prices on that though. Review here - www.musicradar.com/reviews/acoustica-mixcraft-9-pro-studio

Obligatory mention of Reaper which is another DAW that is free and very good. So you've got some options.
And, yeah, what quaddy says Re: audio interface. The Scarlett ones are good, as is the Roland Rubix (which I use).
Apart from that I'll leave the synthy talk to quad. I do use synthy stuff but only via a midi keyboard and some synth plugins as opposed to an actual synth, so he's your man.

Ah yeah, I forgot about Reaper - that's a great one too. There's loads really - you'll need to google a bit and check reviews for cost vs functionality etc.
Hardware synths - there's not that much to faff with really - everything is done on the synth itself, and then it's just a TS lead out to an interface which interacts with your DAW.
However, if you start using multiple hardware synths together, give us a shout, as you'll need to sync the clocks between them all to get them all in perfect time. Relatively easy theory, just need to know depending on the synth model.

Interesting videos - you sound better than I thought you would and it was interesting seeing the various characters that make up the soap opera of your love life For the audio interface, if I want to connect a guitar, piano and synth do I need more than a 2in, 2 out - it seems obvious that it would be, but having never seen one... Also, another silly question - could I attach a korg ms20 mini to my guitar practice amp (I know bass's aren't recommended for instance) as an alternative when not wanting to have the whole setup in action? I've never used a synth before.

I actually use this wee jobby which then goes into my Rubix as I normally have more than 2 inputs and stops me fucking about with shit. I just turn levels up and down when I want to record with something.

ooooh, that looks fancy and I am starting to see that my initial idea of a small box on my desk was very naïve.

Yup, that's the crazy band alright Cheers for the compliment about the gig - it did go really well. For inputs, I'd say the golden rule is *always* get more inputs than you actually need. I know you only have a few things at the moment, but if you start enjoying it, and then some instrument catches your eye.... Put it this way, you wouldn't want to buy one that suits your needs now but means you'd have to upgrade to another one in the future - especially as the price difference for more inputs isn't that much. All depends on budget etc, but the interface is the heart of the whole lot. Whole range of the bastards here - www.andertons.co.uk/brands/focusrite/scarlett-interfaces?#facet:&productBeginIndex:0&facetLimit:&orderBy:&pageView:grid&minPrice:&maxPrice:&pageSize:&There are other options too - Behringer do some good ones. Depends on your budget and your appetite really.

I don't even know how to use my amps, let alone build one. You seem to have a brain for this stuff however so I'm sure you'll get on well and I'm quite intruiged to see/hear the result.

quadfather Those videos are great man. The setup you all have terrifies my simple brain but it sounds fantastic. I know there's lots of shit going on just now, but are there any more live shows in the works?

Cheers! Yes there is a bit of shit isn't there! None of it is really rocket science though. 3 of us have synths but I only use mine in intros and the odd bit here and there. The main bulk of craziness is probably the guitarist's kit - he's got ableton running on the laptop, and he has synth patches on top of some of his guitar sounds, so it takes a bit of kit to do that.
You just get used to new kit arriving really!
Yes, we've got another gig booked for end of February in a pub in Glossop. After that, we'd like to maybe do a few more local ones and then see if we can get a place in Manchester. Be a laugh if anything else

I'm jealous of folk that can run more intricate live setups. It's all I could ever do to play the right notes and remember to sing. It's very cool though. I know I've said it before but yours is exactly the type of band I would want to be playing when I'm out for the night. It's very listenable.

Wasn't all easy! Took over 3 hours to set it up! We got lucky with the mix though. The soundcheck was OK, but when it started filling up, it was great as the people helped absorb the noise.
Cheers, that's a nice compliment.
Have to say though, the main reason is that all 4 of us know exactly what sound we want and it just makes making new stuff so much fucking easier!

After many years of just occasionally playing an acoustic guitar, I've suddenly got all my guitars out and accessible and it means I have two electrics available again and I'm tempted by amplification.
Anyone used the Boss Katanas?

They’re good amps, not game changing but fine for general mucking about. I’d recommend the fender headphone amp thing for practice before anything else, decent sounds and flexible for under a ton.
I got a bit drunk and spent 500 quid on pedals this Christmas

Anyone used the Boss Katanas? A friend does and is very happy with it. I use the Boss Waza Air headphones which are basically a Katana in overhead phones so I at least know what the amp modelling sounds like through headphones - you can get pretty decent tones that are lightyears ahead of your old Line 6 type stuff. I'm using a Fender Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb - basically all the processing power goes into making one, very very convincing amp model and it's kept very simple being in an enclosure of the tube amp but with the same main controls at a fraction of the weight. Depends if you want that Fender thing though and much dearer than a Katana.

I'm going to add to this - if it's for home practice I do recommend the Waza Airs highly. They have a flexibility and a convenience factor that the 'just plug headphones in your amp' crowd don't get.
Mine live in a case and I can just grab that for whatever room I'm in, no leads, no power supplies, just the phones and the dongle. You can program patches with your phone but I generally just have a couple set up that are used like presets. You can also crucially stream music, backing tracks, YouTube tutorials and the like and mix to taste.
I previously used a Fender Mustang GT40 which will have similar modelling to the Fender headphone thing mentioned above. Mustang stuff is OK, Waza is the Cadillac of that realm but is reflected in the price several times over so budget is a factor. I don't think the Fender one will allow you to stream which takes points away as a practice tool, but is *significantly* cheaper.

If you’ve already got good headphones the fender makes more sense imo, unless wireless is really important to you.
In terms of bedroom/practice amps I’ve been happy with my Yamaha thr30, sounds good and doesn’t look “like an amp” which makes it a touch more wife friendly

Been resisting the temptation to buy a viola for the last few months.
It’s going to happen, isn’t it?
The excuse will be to help with the stepdaughter’s cello practice.

Cheers, folks. I may consider wireless headphones later but for now, I want an amp. It has pretty stellar reviews and looks super versatile, so I went for the Katana II. Just the 50w one, hopefully it will get plenty of use.
I have some nice Roland studio cans to plug into it if I get noise complaints.
Last time I owned an amp, I was seventeen. 😁

The Fender Mustang Micro headphone amp does allow you to stream to it fwiw. I'm sure the Waza Air are amazing, but the Fender one does 95% of the same thing for 1/4 the price.

You’ve made a solid choice, 50w will be plenty loud enough for home use and it’ll sound better at low volumes than many other options. It’s nothing like those shitty starter amps that’ll quickly hold you back, if it’s good enough for Rob Chapman to tour with then it’ll be good enough for just about anyone to mess about at home with

Horses for courses really and it is based mainly on what you are willing to spend. I wouldn't say that Mustang modelling approaches that percentage of comparable quality and I have owned a current gen Mustang. I do think that the Boss modelling is comparatively more inspiring. You're also getting the headphones whereas as I understand the Fender is just a dongle. Those headphones are very good, comparable sound quality and better build quality than my hi-fi phones. I will however say that the Wazas are realistically overpriced, I've definitely had my money's worth though. I reckon they're worth about £250 objectively, they're around £320 now, I paid the original asking price on release which was a fair bit higher than that, and I did think twice. In any case, the Katana II will be a good choice of amp. Anyway, to try and reverse the impression of me being a cork sniffer, have put my Xmas cash towards a bass and it's a Squier, CV 70s Jazz. Just because I need one for recording. Hoping it's decent. I had the 60s one and flipped it, the fret board wood was a bit of a letdown on that. Gone for the safe option of maple this time.

Interested in hearing about the Timmy. I'm running a Tumnus and a booster but am thinking I need something that'll approximate a bit more gain and girth.
