Same thing happened with me Kal, I just couldn't be bothered with going through that whole bit again. Gloom is a shit mechanic and everything affected by it looks awful as well.
I was quite happy to move on to something else at that point and there really shouldn't be anyone defending the poor design choice made there.

I've done the four temples and have been putting off going to Hyrule Castle. Guess I'll need to stock up on gloom meals and portable pots beforehand then... Not just yet, no. I was in the same position and thought I was heading to the end but sounds like you have a bit more to do yet...

Honestly everything post the temples feels very phoned in. It’s dropped the overall score right down for me. Shame.

This is intriguing. Outside of the Gleeoks (and those damn hands in the early game), nothing else has come remotely close to troubling me. I think I have that gloom recovery gear, but I’ve yet to upgrade it or even use it. Sounds like I will absolutely have to.

Okay cool, I was hoping there was a bit more to go instead of just the final castle/boss battle. I also have one memory left, was debating whether I should get that before heading to the castle. I probably might need to get the Master Sword too...

This is quite surprising, as every review/impression I've seen said the game finishes very strongly with a memorable last act, so was looking forward to it. Disappointing if that's not the case.

I'm still having a blast. Story is much better than botw.

Story is definitely a big step up from botw, in fact most things are. I was having a good time with it until I wasn't, I don't regret buying it or anything like that but the end part of the gameplay just isn't good.

It's definitely memorable, it's just the Gloom that's annoying to deal with gameplay-wise if you're not prepared. Even if you run past all the dodgeable parts there's still a good bit that can't be skipped. That said, the final boss sequence is definitely worth the trouble, at least IMO.

Oooo this makes me nervous. Having a blast and it's a shame the end seems a bit pants? I still have one more temple after 90 hours so in no rush.

Just enjoy yourself and then save up 10 million things to battle gloom with before doing the last bit.

I enjoyed it fwiw, but I'm a massive hoarder and had heaps of mats. I can see how the attrition would be extremely annoying though. Feels almost un-Nintendo-ey that they didn't add a way of dealing with it.

I have the 4 temples done, master sword, spoilery further progression on the main quest that can't be too far away from the last leg of the main story. Got the whole zonaite armour fully upgraded and 8 batteries.
I'm doing a lot of depth investigating at the moment, but there's still a crazy amount unchecked on my side quests page.
With the zonaite armour fully upgraded (and the golden circlet) you're basically a tank.

The more Schematics I find in the depths, the more I realise that Nintendo fully expected all those crazy contraptions we saw players building when the game first came out. There are so many weird little contraptions to discover and now I’m thinking I could make an assistant flying mech all of my own.

I always assumed I would be one of the last people posting in this thread, given how slowly I am progressing through this game, but I’m still getting excited about stuff!
I’m going through the Canyon towards Gerudo Desert and it’s amazing what they’ve done to the place! It is still the same map as before, but they’ve made some fantastic and surprising changes. I’m messing about so much I had to return to camp to make some more heat resisting potions.
These changes make me wonder if BotW was really the finished game they intended to release, or if this game is close to that realisation. (Depths and sky islands aside), the world has more character and personality this time around. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to look as barren as it sometimes was.

To me it felt like both games nailed their intended atmosphere tbh.
Breath of the Wild was meant to evoke feelings of a Hyrule that was barren and devastated by the Calamity and still hadn't quite managed to find its feet even after a century. There were very few NPCs roaming around, no real effort to combat the monsters, the bigger settlements didn't really have much communication/cooperation until you came along and helped them and even some specific NPCs (like the one on a bridge that thinks you're trying to jump off and tries to stop you if you walk to the edge -thinly veiled suicide implications-) help sell it. The soundtrack roaming around also felt more minimalistic and subdued.
Meanwhile, Tears of the Kingdom shows a Hyrule that, despite the Upheaval, has come far since BotW and is banding together even post-Upheaval. There's a concerted effort to fight the monsters (the various militias you can help), the NPCs are actively investigating the Upheaval, the Zonai ruins, the Depths and the Zelda rumours, the various settlements and races cooperate even aside from your help (exemplified by Lookout Landing and the flourishing Tarrey Town, but there's also examples like the surrounding stables helping Rito Village with food and supplies while the snowstorm is pelting them), there's a much greater sense of progress and rebuilding in general (Kakariko Village becomes a tourist attraction, Tarrey Town and other settlements utilize the Zonai devices, Hateno learns to embrace both tradition and novelty and so on)... Hyrule is recovering, not helpless anymore, and it shows. It's all really well done, imho.

Just finished it off. I agree that the lead-up to the final boss is probably isn't the strongest part of the game (I'd probably settle with just "fine", though I also had been forewarned enough to stock up on anti-gloom food). I thought the final boss was pretty good though. The dragon phase was quite a spectacle, though wasn't particularly challenging. I did genuinely let out a snort at the health bar on phase 2 though.

Thinking about it a bit more now, the final boss here is essentially an arguably better, more robust parallel of BotW's in many ways. Both had two main phases, broadly speaking, one that was meant to be an actual fight and another that was more of a victory lap, but:
BotW: both phases are a fight against mindless Ganon (Calamity/Dark Beast), the Champions' assistance, cool as it is, simply cuts Calamity's health in half in one shot from a distance, the new Champions don't actually help, the first phase "split" is just Calamity starting to use a barrier and Zelda's assistance is just creating weak points for you to shoot (I guess the implication is that she's also the one who gives you the Bow of Light, to be fair).
TotK: the first main phase is against Ganondorf with his mind and cunning intact, the first phase split is an entire form change plus the health bar bait-and-switch (and in less broad terms this is more accurately a three phase fight compared to two in BotW), the new Sages actively fight alongside you rather than just cutting his health in half again, their assistance is not only more personal, but also technically incorporates the old Sages' powers since the new Sages inherited them, instead of leaving one group behind... Then Zelda plays a more active and personal role as well, provoking the Dark Dragon into opening its mouth to bite her and giving Link an opportunity to jump, then letting you ride on her to fight and catching you no matter how quickly you fall

(Depths and sky islands aside), the world has more character and personality this time around. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to look as barren as it sometimes was. Even though I agree with what JuniorFE said about both games being effective at showing Hyrule at different stages post-Calamity, I'm sure there was an element of the above. After all, TotK was only made because they had new ideas that they couldn't implement in BotW or its DLC, and maybe also because they didn't quite have the technical mastery to make it all run well on the Switch at that time. E.g. (light Yiga clan quest spoilers): In BotW, when you defeat Master Kohga he falls down a huge bottomless pit. So it makes sense that in TotK he's now in the depths investigating the area along wit most of the Yiga clan... that may well have been a bit of foreshadowing by Nintendo.

The fate of Master Kohga is the kind of foreshadowing/sequel hook that works even if a sequel never gets made, and I like that. It's not like the more ham-fisted, in-your-face sequel hooks that then risk looking contrived if one never gets made (or silly if there never was a chance of a sequel... side-eyes the Dragon Ball live action movie) You end up never making a direct sequel or DLC (or never had plans to in the first place)? Kohga as far as the player knows is dead, but his fate is juuust ambiguous enough to let speculation and fanfiction happen. You actually do make a sequel/DLC? Not only have you already established that the Yiga clan still exists even without Kohga (so if he himself doesn't fit in the sequel you can still use the Yiga anyway), but you still have the "Hey, remember that time Kogha fell into the pit? We can do something with this!" possibility available

That's a mark of good game design though, innit? You can go as deep as you want in how you interpret things, whether it's the broader design or minor details, and it's all equally valid

I'm still exploring away, sounds like we're at the same point. I haven't really spent much time in the sky or in the depths and I am around 95 hours lol. Gerudo temple is my "last" of the initial four temples. Have no idea what's after that.

It’s likely going to be my third temple at the 160 hour mark. I’ve spent a long time in the depths finding treasures and gear. After that I still have the pirates, the water temple(?) and the entire Akkala region. I’m playing so painfully slow, but I’m easily distracted by seemingly nothing, often.

Almost a QTE. But the whole game is about the experience.

I am pumped having just finished this.
I loved the end BUT I can well imagine being hugely pissed off if I hadn't stocked up on meals before, especially gloom ones which are pretty much unnecessary the entire game beforehand.
First lynel down en route also.
And the finale was just fucking great. And what music.
Yeah up there as best ever IMO.

Congrats! I did my third temple yesterday (In the desert) and at times it felt like a proper old school dungeon. All that missing were locked doors and keys.
Now to spend another 10 - 15 hours there finishing of quests and Shrines, and finding more koroks.

I’ve been using arrows very freely these past couple of days so I thought I’d check how many I had left, in case I needed to buy more.
878.
This game really gives them away, doesn’t it?

I think it's more that in previous games I'm pretty sure there was a max in the quiver, so stockpiling didn't really happen.
That being said, not sure how you've done that. I've about 300 at the mo but at one point I felt like I was running low with about 100 or so left.

Crates and boxes seem to be full of the stuff, more so than in BotW. Good thing, too, they're abundantly useful
