Yeah, I think that's the core point here. I reckon the whole DLSS thing is just to silence that one niggling negative on all the coverage: 4K when docked. Most people, and you'd imagine especially those with the OLED model, will be playing handheld. So, it's not to use modern tech to provide similar quality on TV as well as portable, i.e. a perfect hybrid console, the main selling point of the console, it's to "silence negative coverage"? As Nintendo are a huge company and not gaming fanboys on forums, I doubt it. No. Very clearly not what I was saying. Small point of order: because of the increase in clock rate when docked, actually the docked experience is superior today. With the caveat that it looks veeeeery blurry at 4K. DLSS would remove the "very blurry" from that equation. I think that's a net win, and does allow them to realistically market themselves against other 4K capable consoles. It'll do sweet FA for the undocked experience, I reckon. So the "point" of the new console is to have more grunt across the board - faster loading, better graphics, smoother frame rates, and hopefully some Nintendo bespoke feature that enables something new and innovative in gameplay. Like any generational leap, that would be the point. Here's hoping the APU isn't gimped. You seem to think that DLSS is the key feature of this new model. I posit that it isn't, it's just another tertiary bit of tech that tidies up a presently ugly part of the presentation. Not the second coming.

I heard that Sony are stepping up production of the PS5 Pro so that they can compete with this beast.

So it's going to be as big as a PS5? If the leaks are correct it's supposedly PS4 Pro/Series S Level. Anything near that would be fantastic.

I said that it doesn't make sense that Nintendo and Nvidia would spend years working on it as part of the Switch 2 implementation if it was as shit as people in their thread said it was.

DLSS is literally the only viable option open to Nintendo to reach an acceptable 4K presentation. They haven't been "working on it" together - it's Nvidia tech that's baked into all their stuff. It's practically off the shelf commodity tech right now for an integration partner. You seem to think that Shiggsy has been dictating development. Not a chance.
And it really does have some big drawbacks. That's just a statement of fact. The same drawbacks will 100% apply to the Switch. Most users won't care or notice, but Nintendo themselves will, and people who know the tech will. On balance, the tradeoffs are worth it.
You just don't want to accept that DLSS, or specifically the Magical Nintendo DLSS, will have any drawbacks. All realtime rendering is compromise, dude. That's just a fact.

Why the ridiculous and childish putting words in my mouth that I never said? Who mentioned Miyamoto or anything like that? When did I say or suggest there would be no drawbacks? I wrote "It was leaked from dev kits that they were working on a next Switch console which using DLSS will output at 4k. The chipset hasn't even been released yet, Nintendo and Nvidia have been working on it for years." From what I understand new versions of DLSS are being rolled out regularly with improvements each time, who the fuck knows how well It'll work on Switch 2 by the time it comes out? I don't. I imagine that it won't be completely shit, that's not the same as saying whatever magical shit you're imagining.

I think it's pretty obvious that if a new Switch were to come out next year, it would be a modest upgrade - akin to the DSi or new 3DS models - that may or may not use DLSS as the exclusive new feature to help clean up the docked image. It's still way too early for a proper Switch 2, as much as we'd all like one. More likely that those Nvidia leaks are for a console that's still years away.

The leak pretty much matches what has been repeatedly "revealed" for the past 2 years ago so I'm not sure, I think since the Xbox One X/PS4 Pro came along, generations aren't necessarily like before so not sure we can make the same assumptions as before. For them to support diss they'd be forced to have a significant upgrade as the only chipsets with tensor cores are much more powerful than the OG Switch.

That's not necessarily true that they would be massively more powerful, I believe all Nvidia chips have tensor cores in them it just depends on what class the chipset is. If they're sticking with the same form factor then heat dissipation is a big thing so it would have to be a low power effort pointing to something not necessarily a massive jump in power. But again I'm just speculating like everyone here.

It has been five years already, let's say six by the time it notionally launches. I'd hope for more than a DSi style upgrade to a home console. Absolutely it has the thermal limits, but also tech has come along somewhat since 2017. Liquid metal, more advanced dissipation assemblies, higher end components on a smaller node with equal or lesser power draw, etc. etc. Fingers crossed. I don't need Series X levels of grunt, but it'd be great to get a tangible upgrade alongside sorting out some quality of life issues like loading time, storage, RAM, battery life, etc. etc. Unlike the PS5 (which is a little big and ugly for me) I'd probably buy the Switch Next on day one. I really did get a lot of joy from the original unit before the software I like dried up in year three.

The Steam deck is noisy as fuck and that's huge. Handheld gaming is very limited with what it can do power wise whilst keeping the size down.
That's just how it is. I would personally rather have it more like the switch and quiet than the Steam deck and noisy but that comes with the issue of less power.

It's still think it's going to be a multiple of the current switch's performance, that thing has a 20nm chip from 2015, and they are down to 8nm now. So even if it was exactly the same architecture it'd run a couple times faster or cooler.

That logic would be sound if it wasn't for the huge improvements in power with subsequent architectures and the gains in performance/watt from node shrinkage in the last 6 years.

Ok but if you're using the steam deck as an example for what it is capable of, the form factor is nowhere near the Switch. And that's something using the technology in the current consoles that has RT capability. If they want a bigger form factor then yeah sure but regardless of improvements a higher set of features will pump out a lot of heat and sound.

The problem is ecosse is that you don't actually have any idea what you are talking about and are clinging to a few things you have read in articles. I come from over 20 years of building servers and design of thermal solutions. A new version on the switch can only be so powerful and remain silent and around the same size. The newest piece of tech in the field shows you this (the Steam deck), there is no magic that changes that.

Where did I claim that it would be more powerful than the Steam Deck? techunwrapped.com/nintendo-switch-2-would-triple-the-power-of-valves-steam-deck/If the Nvidia hacked data is correct, the GPU will have 1536 Cuda Cores on a newer architecture compared to Switch's 256, it will be on a far smaller technology node. Please explain to clueless me with all your expertise why that wouldn't result in significant performance increase over the original Switch.

Nobody said it wouldn't be an improvement.
You were the one that bought up 4k. 4k isn't happening and 720p upscaled to 4k doesn't look good either. The obsession with 4k is not a good thing as there is very little that can run 4k games at a decent (60) frame rate.
I said they should aim for 1080p at 60fps, which is a huge improvement over the switch.
Then you started acting like a twat.

Again, the article, which is indeed incredibly clickbaity, even says it depends on what clockspeed the new Switch will operate at. Increased performance is a given but 3 times the performance of the Steam Deck? In the same form factor?

Good point about the deck actually, it's a recent chip and it's pushing what you can do in that form factor, so you'd think it'd be at least a bit worse than that. It's difficult comparing X86 to ARM though, the recent apple laptops punch above their weight too.

The recent apple chips are uniformly shit for gaming however.
what concerns me most about the tech leaks so far is nvidia are apparently prioritising the self driving car market with these technologies. Maybe Nintendo rally have sent their best chip design team to optimise the technology in collaboration but I doubt it

There were shitloads of articles from reputable journalists, devkit leaks etc. with 4K Switch 2 meaning it will be able to OUTPUT at 4K. Here's Nintendo's patient on upscaling/DLSS style upscaling, the Switch OLED Dock can output at 4K, it's probably likely that it will be able to output at 4K. Even though I've already typed this, I'll repeat for you. I AM NOT IN ANY WAY CLAIMING THAT THE NEXT SWITCH CONSOLE WILL RENDER AT 4K RESOLUTION. I AM CLAIMING THAT IT WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE POWERFUL THAN THE 5 YEAR OLD SWITCH, USE DLSSS AND BE ABLE TO OUTPUT AN UPSCALED 4K SIGNAL FROM THE DOCK.
I hope that's clear enough for you.
