If you have a Switch as your secondary machine, you could easily see it as your Mario/Zelda machine, but it would certainly be a narrowed view of Nintendo's top tier output.
Surely their first party output is still greater than Sony's, even without those two names? Even if you ignored all the extra 'mario themed' games like the kart games, the party games, the multiple different sports games, RPG games and strategy games there's so much out there, covering all sorts of genres. Fire Emblem, Splatoon, Xenoblade, Kirby, Arms, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Smash, Pikmin, Pokemon, etc...
It's certainly far more diverse than Sony's output, if not larger.
And let's not forget Jump Rope Challenge.

“ Shigeru Miyamoto was happy for Retro to take on a new game in the series because it wasn't a franchise he himself created. Original lead developer for Metroid Prime John Whitmore told DidYouKnowGaming: "Miyamoto didn't care if we killed it". “ I’m not basing it in just that article, but decades of articles, Miyamoto’s own words in interviews, and the physical evidence: Nintendo’s actual output. It’s pretty clear that putting him in an executive position leans heavily on Nintendo’s software output to mainly promote things he’s interested in - because he thought of them. He’s literally said he didn’t like F-Zero GX because he didn’t make it himself. So no F-Zero game in 18 years? Metroid, my favourite Nintendo franchise, gets much less development love than it should. Great they made Metroid Dread after what, 18 years? You’d think Nintendo would have the money to acquire Eternal Darkness and do more there, or work in more diverse genres. Excite Truck could have been Nintendo’s answer to Burnout but they gave up on it. Imagine how stunted PlayStation’s first party output would be if they put a development star of the 80s in charge and he quietly smothered IPs he didn’t make himself. They don't have this issue and it's still 90% third person action games with the odd different title.

Tbh, F-Zero and Starfox aside, I'm struggling to think of any major Nintendo IP that hasn't already had some sort of release on the Switch, even if a few of them were just Wii U ports. And I really doubt that Nintendo are sitting on F-Zero just because it might piss Miyamoto off a bit - not if it had the potential to be a huge sales success, which to be frank it probably doesn't.

I still think 3rd party support is a really huge deal for a Nintendo console, and it’s why I’m hoping the next switch will be able to maybe play current gen ports. I mean it’s all good and well to make these lists of games, but if Xenoblade, Splatoon and Kirby aren’t your thing for example, you’ll have years where there’s nothing coming out that you particularly like. They make great games, no question about it, but unless you like all of them, you’re going to need another platform.
And just to go, well actually for a second, apple makes 13.5 billion on games every year, just to put that 16 billion number into perspective.

Seems pretty reasonable And who is it you think Nintendo need to earn "good will" with? A few people on the internet who demand game x or y (and still buy their consoles anyway)? It's OK to want a new F-Zero or Metroid but it doesn't mean Miyamoto is a cunt

The figures we mentioned were cash in hand

I get why hardcore gamers ‘want’ 3rd party to be more important to Nintendo, but it just isn’t. And the reason for that isn’t brilliant first party Mario and Zelda games. It’s Pokémon. Pokémon is the most valuable media franchise of all time by some distance. More valuable than Star Wars and Marvel put together. We’re actually quite lucky we still do get things like Breath of the Wild as truth is Nintendo don’t even need to bother with that. They could literally just make Pokémon games and be done with it.

They are churning out so many of them as well now. I think there are 3 this year at least.

Yup. And the games of course are really just ads for the merch, which is where all the money is. The value of Pokémon merch is absolutely off the scale and way more profitable than anything anywhere else in the gaming industry.

Didn't Nintendo create hardcore gamers with the Wii? I feel like it started around that time
I've only played one Pokemon game - Sun - it was OK. One of those games I feel like I've experienced and don't need to play another to do it all over again. I didn't catch them all but I caught enough

I've always been frustrated by Nintendo limiting their development. I can appreciate they want ownership and control over production but they have so many great IP's that would sell really well.
Golden Sun, Dragon Quest, Wave Race, F Zero, Punch Out, Advance Wars.
Mario Tennis/Football, Rabids and Splatoon 3 just don't excite me.

Don't they still regularly release Dragon Quest games/spin offs? Thought that was SE anyway

The real reason for the war. Putin is working for Miyamoto, trying to hold back the IPs he hates.

I’m sure we’ve all been asked buying advice at some point, I’d just like to be able to recommend the switch without having to say, but it only plays Nintendo games (and the games are expensive).

It doesn't only play Nintendo games, it's just that Nintendo games are the 'big' ones
If all you want to do is play some games, there's some great Nintendo first party games and plenty of other stuff besides. If you want to play all the latest mainstream stuff, then yeah, don't get a Switch

Golden Sun - True Dragon Quest, Square Enix, not Nintendo Wave Race, - Basically part of Wii Sports, standalone Jetski game probably unlikely to sell well nowadays tbh F Zero - True, doesn't seem to be a big market for racing games nowadays, apart from the big hitter sims like GT and Forza. Punch Out, Last version was on Wii Advance Wars. - Coming on Switch

The real reason for the war. Putin is working for Miyamoto, trying to hold back the IPs he hates. Miyamoto’s warmongering bloodlust won’t be satiated until Ukraine is renamed Wii Ukraine.

Dunno if this is true, but my daughter pointed out recently that the reason they couldn't live stream the name of this on that Nintendo direct that was supposed to be live around the time of the Queen's funeral was because they called it "Tears of the Kingdom".
Never put 2-and-2 together like that 😅

I’m gonna go with ‘not true’ because the Direct did reveal the title of the game. I remember seeing an article on Polygon a couple days later with clarification from Nintendo that it was tears as in crying, and not tears as in ripping something.

I think the link (hah) was made because it meant crying. we were in a mourning period. Tears of the (United) Kingdom.
Tears (as in ripping) would have been better actually, given that Hyrule has been ripped apart.

Yeah, they only pulled the live stream for the UK which in hindsight makes perfect sense. Seemed like they were going overboard at first and just joining everybody else making stupid sacrifices, but yeah, with a name like that they made the right move!

Take that with a huge amount of pinched salt though.
