Yeah this. It takes a big adjustment to get used to playing something 2D these days if I don't already have the muscle memory (eg SoR2, various Mario games, properly emulated Sonic games). On top of that it's been ages since I played anything where the height of your jump depends on the button press as I've largely abandoned 3D platformers. Manageable learning curve though

A lot of my issues with Souls games were down to the wanky controls and the slow wind up and momentum of it all. It's no coincidence that the massively sped-up and more responsive Sekiro is the first From game in a while I've really taken to. I'm envious of anyone going throigh HK for the first time. Phenomenal game, and I'd add my name to the list of people anticipating Silksong over almost any other game.

Yeah true. I generally play a lot of 2D games as well, so guess I'm more used to the rhythms of them.

Same reasons I bounced off the Souls game – found the controls super unresponsive and floaty. Maybe I should give Sekiro a go.

Sekiro feels completely different and you have a proper jump

There's definitely a learning curve, there's definitely a FUCK THIS! moment at a few points, but you can eventually fall into a rhythm and feel yourself getting better at it. But there's a limit, right? If you end up in a place where you're hating it, move on. A fair few forumites did exactly that. Life's too short, etc. etc. I pushed through, though, and was really glad I did.

I really want to push on. Stylistically it's astounding and I need to see more of it. Will fire it up again later

I would say I didn't really feel like I was on top of the rhythm of the game until about 20 hours in. Once it clicked it was still hard, but I felt like I knew how the game was communicating to me.

I think I almost completed it, but then for some reason left it before really finishing up. Some day I'll finish it.

This thread (and on the other place) is great. So good hearing people play it for the first time and all the little surprises they encounter. That was all of us once.

It's a great game. Actually had a hankering to replay it recently. Think its been about two years since I played it so it would feel relatively fresh. Completed it on Switch so have tempted to play it on the Playstation for some trophies. Don't really care for that sort of thing but kind of a good excuse to do so.

Completed it yesterday, final boss wasn't too bad as I was quite "powered up" finished on 71%.
Looks like I missed a couple of bosses. Not sure if im going to leave it there or tie up some of the loose stuff.
I was almost close to getting the "proper" ending so might give that a go.
Absolutly loved this game, I know its all been said before but it truly sucked me in. Atmosphere and music for me top draw.
My only negatives for me is the contact damage on bosses got frustrating and travelling around felt a bit laboured at times.

I don't think I'm ever going to "properly" finish it. I love the world, the lore, basically everything but the gameplay.
Which I didn't *hate*, mind. But the combination of (imo) excessive length and things hitting the wrong end of the frustration/determination curve towards the end, made me not want to continue. Unlike, say, Monster Boy, which was probably just as long but a joy to play from start to finish. Or Ori, which was often frustrating to play but was over before it became too much a problem.
I liked this more than enough to get Silksong whenever it comes out. But I didn't love it as much as I wanted to.

I bounced off it a few months back, but all this talk has made me reinstall it. I'll try and give it some love over the weekend.

An easy/adventure mode would work quite well in something like HK. Even without the combat, there's still plenty of exploring and discovering to do

Apparently "a few months back" was actually 2 years. Where the hell did that time go?

The lore in the game is amazing. So much of the story is hidden in the artwork, it's quite extraordinary. I was totally sucked in by it all. I'd say it's pretty impossible to understand what's going on just by playing through yourself though – spent a lot of time reading up on it afterwards. YouTuber mossbag is like the HK superfan and does some amazing videos explaining the world. Essential if you're into the lore.
Par example (spoilers obv, for people who haven't finished):

I always find interesting that people say how hard Hollow Knight is. I would say I'm adequate at games, probably better than average, but certainly not some godlike elite pro-gamer. I have completed all Dark Souls games, but mostly through brute force in my initial play and I'm certainly not one of those freaks that says that they are actually easy.
I found Hollow Knight pretty easy. I think I completed just under 20 hours. I don't remember any boss giving me much difficulty, besides the rolling knights. Knowing where to go was the hardest part, but actual fights were mostly fine and I would say nothing was comparable to fighting Ornstein and Smuogh or Blood Starved Beast.
That isn't to gloat or claim to be some gaming God, but I just find it interesting. I'm not really sure what it is about the game that I can click with where others struggle.
What I would say is that the optional content is very hard. It is the one area of the game where I think it could have done better with, as the difference between the main bosses you have to beat for the most straightforward ending and the optional or "good" endings are massive.
I would say to a new player that if they run into a boss and really struggle then chances are they are doing something they don't have to for the ending you are likely to get on your first play. Also, as others have said, try to upgrade your nail as much as possible, as that makes a big difference.
Love the game and really hope we will see Silksong soon.

How many endings are there? I did the nasty platforming section used the dream nail on the hollow knight and beat the Radiance , is that the best ending? It's the only one I've seen Agree that I didn't find the game hard but I don't think it's always just a case of difficulty per se, some people just struggle more with certain types of gameplay or are better using different skillsets
I've always been bad at RTS games because I'm too lazy to constantly manage everything. Anything beyond C&C, where you can just sit in your base building up a massive army of tanks and then storm the enemy, and I'm terrible

I'm terrible at anything I can't Leeroy Jenkins my way through, so anything involving any level of stealth or tactics is right out the window.

I've lost about a third of my Soul and the head/meter is broken. What's the craic? It's a Dark Souls thing. Find your dead body to reclaim it and your lost geo
Alternatively, you can buy the small key in town and open the door to the right of town to unlock somewhere you can reclaim it, but you need a specific item to do so. Just go and get it!

It's the only one I've seen There are 5 endings, with a bonus post credit ending if you complete a particular side quest. Killing the Hollow Knight without the Voidheart is the most straightforward and the one I would expect first time players to get . I think the one you describe is the longest one and involves doing the most. The two endings added in the last DLC involve killing all the bosses in the Pantheon . Not done it, but I assume you can do that in a more straightforward way than the Voidheart ending, but it will be harder.

My completion rate earlier this year was 99%. That was a massive taunt, discovering that just before the final boss, but it took me nearly 50 hours to get that far, so I opted to complete the game and take a break.
I do love it though. Once you've unlocked some of the abilities and learnt some of the little tricks, the combat becomes incredibly addictive.

I think I was 106% or something (the DLC gets lumped on top, for those that don't know) with a good 75 hours on the clock. What a game.
