It would be the most Formula 1 thing ever now for it to be as dull as dishwater from start to finish and all of the potential new eyes being all "WTF is all the fuss about?"

Hmm tricky decision, is there a way to get Sky's 4K picture but with with C4's commentary? My reading of the article is that C4 will be showing it with Croft and Brundle. Oh you're right, I didn't read all the way down. I guess they anticipated lots of other people would have the same dilemma and made the choice for them.

I mean, of course it will be Crofty and Brundle. It's a giant "PLZ SUBSCRIBE TO SKY NEXT SEASON" advert. I'd imagine they will mention the new regs more than a few times above normal too to drum that home.
Ace they've done it though. It's the kind of thing you need to make available to everyone really.

Me too. A dull race would be far better than to have another Jeddah. Quite a sad state of affairs, but domination by either team would likely be more satisfying conclusion than a close fought battle because of the incredibly likelihood that that would involve more overly aggressive driving and shenanigans. I don't want Max & Red Bull to win because of the way they've conducted themselves but if it's like last year and they just qualify on pole and disappear again than they'll have earnt the title. Admittedly I'd have to switch off the second they cross the line to avoid hazardous levels of smugness from Horner, but I can make peace with that and look forward to 2022. Better that than a bad taste in the mouth all winter or Sky having to fill for 2hrs whilst the stewards deliberate post race penalties (ironically C4 will already be off air).

the-race.com/formula-1/fia-issues-points-deduction-warning-ahead-of-f1-title-decider/Key section: "Masi’s notes included the following regulation reminders: “Any infringement of the principles of fairness in competition, behaviour in an unsportsmanlike manner or attempt to influence the result of a competition in a way that is contrary to sporting ethics. “For all the FIA championships, cups, challenges, trophies or series, the stewards may also decide to impose the following penalties: Suspension for one or more competitions, withdrawal of points for the championship, cup, challenge, trophy, series. “Points should not be deducted separately from drivers and competitors, save in exceptional circumstances.” This is exactly what needed to happen and I'm delighted that Massi has taken this step. Have to applaud him for finally getting in front of events rather than playing catch-up. I owe an apology for being so sceptical. It's about as forthright as the FIA can realistically be and the last sentence is absolutely key. The clear implication is for Toto and Christian to reign their drivers in or risk the constructors which is ultimately where the real money is. Now we're clear, neither driver can win the Championship by doing something unethical or unsporting.

Just seen the Abu Dhabi track update has also included adding some of those ultra aggressive kerbs like they had in Qatar, and Pirelli just so happen to have opted for the 3 softest compounds this weekend. Could add an extra layer to the drama.
Also worth noting that while Red Bull/Max won here last time, Mercedes had their engines turned down for that weekend and Hamilton was extremely subdued just coming off having Covid, so probably not a good representation of what's going to happen this weekend. Don't really care who wins but I do hope there's still an air of uncertainty at around half distance. Would cap off a great season.

Yeah agreed, logically Mercedes should have the advantage given the track changes. Equally, Red Bull wasn't supposed to be competitive in Saudi and very much were when tyre compounds and ages were equal. I suspect that what we've really seen all year is the single biggest factor is which team can get the tyres switched on and fully optimise their setup. It's been really hard to predict who will manage that best round by round.
Anyway I'm far less stressed about a close contest now that 'notice has been served'.

Calling it now. Max and Lewis DNF on penultimate lap, Kimi breaks through to end career with the win.

I think I'd have to stop watching all sports full stop if it happened, because the only way would be down from there.

I'm pretty confident we'll see another Merc Rocketship and Max barely being able to take 2nd.

Extremely likely I'd say, yeah. But fucking hell it's going to be great if they line up P1 and 2 on the grid.

I just hope next season Toto and Horner just shut the fuck up. I’m so bored of those two waffling. Surely I’m not the only one?

I just hope next season Toto and Horner just shut the fuck up. I’m so bored of those two waffling. Surely I’m not the only one? They could both do with slumming it in the midfield for a season or two to gain some much needed perspective. They've both done their best to derail and devalue a brilliant championship between them. I don't think Horner is helping Verstappen's siege mentality one bit and Toto is doing his level best to drag Lewis back into a victim mentality he's been clearly trying to shake himself free of to do some real good with his voice. Realistically I'd rather see neither of them looking insufferably smug on Sunday as neither of them deserves it. Hopefully the focus goes to the drivers.

One thing I will say for Toto is I had no idea he was such a linguist. Don't know if anyone is watching Sky F1 now but he casually switched to fluent Italian for the Sky Italia interviewer. Apparently also speaks fluent French and Polish on top of German and English. Ridiculous.

I don't know if they always do this on Sky F1 as I don't usually leave it on in the background.
Sky are basically flexing their media muscles here coordinating questions between Sky UK, Sky Italia and Sky Germany. They are basically switching between Ted and Craig filling (quite entertainingly and skillfully to be fair) and Toto and Christian in the pen as they bounce between Sky interviewers from around Europe.

The only interesting thing about FP1 was Jack Aitken matching Latifi for pace, post-injury recovery. Very pleased for him and nice for Williams to give him another run.

I don't understand why they persist with these daytime practice sessions at night/twilight events that don't even begin to match race conditions. It's pointless for anything other than recon. They get fewer and fewer chances to run the cars and gather data as it is.

Isn't it simply a question of being the best option from several less than ideal ones? The alternatives are having one less session, running P1 and P2 closer together (so less time for data analysis and media commitments between) or a very late finish local time for everyone working the event. They also have to fit F2 in somewhere.

Logistically speaking, of course it makes perfect sense but from a perspective of gathering any meaningful data it seems totally useless.

Imagine being a Red Bull employee working your hole off, and then your boss tells the world at every opportunity that the Mercedes car is actually much better and plucky little Max is single-handedly keeping them in it. Seems a strange way to reward and motivate your team of 1000 people for doing their best work.
You'd hope he had the good sense to send an internal email explaining this media strategy but still, it's got to piss some people off to work so hard to try and create this narrative (he's really crowbarring it in - I've head him say it three times and it's not even Saturday). I find it weird that any team principal would go that far. I guess he feels he doesn't have to bother crediting Honda anymore either but it's deeply odd. He was similar with Vettel but there is apparently no limit as to where he'll go to massage his lead driver's ego. Is Max really that fragile? I doubt it.
