This was better than I thought it'd be, quite impressive range, although his Norris needs work.

Perez out in Q2 despite being on the softs.

Sergio's been saved by the Red Bull pace so often this year. Three tenths off equating to a chunk of positions was what Pierre and Alex faced.
Bottas really should have had P2, but perhaps the clean side of then grid is better anyway.
I'm pretty nervous about T1, given passing will be hard you'd think Max will just launch one in like Barcelona. A no score for both suits him after all.
At least the start should be exciting.

Think Lewis will fancy the merc pace over the race. Both mercs on clean side so we shall see. Could be both of them 1 and 2 after T1.
Max can't risk taking out Lewis and ending his race with Lewis carrying on..I think both will be Conservative.

Sergio's been saved by the Red Bull pace so often this year. Yeah I don't buy this rich vein of form that Perez is supposedly in. He and Bottas have failed pretty much all year to do what their team mates have needed them to do, which is to finish second on the weekends they're in the stronger car.

Well. Another twist.
Max up before the stewards for ignoring double yellows. Bottas and Sainz also in trouble for single yellows.
You'd think 5 or 10 place drop for Max and 3 or 5 for the other two.

the-race.com/formula-1/mark-hughes-the-truth-of-mercedes-gains-amid-red-bull-claims/Excellent and fascinating deep dive into the data from qualifying. In short Mercedes are very fast, but it's not about their engine or rear wing delivering straight line speed. Indeed the data contradicts Horner's claims that they've been forced to go with a more conservative rear wing in response to the new tests. Rather it's the Merc concept being the best on front limited tracks and Qatar surprising everyone by getting more front left limited as the track rubbered in. They're making their gains in the corners.

5 places grid penalty for Max, 3 for Bottas. I thought Sainz also had one coming?

Sainz apparently slowed down enough, while Max and Bottas didn't.
This ought to be an opportunity for Bottas to push Max down to third. Colour me unsurprised if he doesn't.

I think it'll now take a Mercedes mechanical failure to see the first non-Merc hybrid era champion but nevertheless, it's been a quality season. Bit of a shame this latest jump in performance looks pretty insurmountable for these last few races but beggars can't be choosers.

With so little precedent to draw on, I think today might still throw up a few surprises. Either way it’s extremely likely to go to the final day, which isn’t a bad outcome for the season.

Definitely not. It's way more than anyone could have asked for when they announced the regs were being delayed a year. I honestly thought this was going to be one of the worst seasons in the history of the sport when they called it, so I'm glad it turned out this way.
Alonso's been teasing he's going to send it from 3rd on the grid with nothing to lose so that's interesting. If Hamilton manages to get through T1 though he should have his most comfortable day of the season.

Verstappen's start was incredible.
Looks a diabolical track for overtaking.

I tell a lie. Apparently you just don't need to even brake at T1 haha.

Bottas is fast, but he's no racer. Perez is completely the opposite.

Hamilton looks to just be gapping him at his own leisure to me, much like Max did at USA.
Great recovery for the championship mind you. Alonso 16 seconds back in 3rd already. I'm praying to God this stuff dies next year.

Bottas could potentially switch onto the softs here for his second stint. Could make it interesting.

He could have gone onto the softs a lap or two earlier than he got the puncture. D'oh Mercedes.

Haha, kiss of death.
The bloke would have been right at home at 2000's McLaren Mercedes, with the luck he has.

Basically, that's Max getting the fastest lap confirmed. No Bottas to prevent the free pitstop now.

Actually, that is now Bottas's main job. Get fastest lap.

Lewis should maybe stay out until the penultimate lap then go onto the soft to guarantee fastest lap.
