I'll be surprised if it's not NZ vs Australia in the Women's Sevens final. I am surprised.

I enjoy the replays, the slow mo is like watching a Zack Snyder movie except it's actually exciting.

If you "enjoyed" the opening ceremony, I can recommend listening to this week's The Rest is Entertainment podcast, where it is discussed. Particularly interesting was what the commentators went through, knowing absolutely nothing about the content and having to do it outside in the rain with no umbrella, as they were told it would obscure the view. Fair play to them for holding it together throughout.

A member of Team GB's rugby sevens team has been withdrawn "on medical grounds" and is being investigated over racist WhatsApp messages. "what's wrong with him doc?" "i'm sorry to have to tell you this just before his big match but he's riddled to the bone with racism" Showing your biases assuming the suspended player is a man 😛

Showing your biases assuming the suspended player is a man 😛 Be difficult to withdraw a bloke from the Rugby Sevens, the men's competition ended on Saturday and more importantly because the GB men didn't qualify for the Olympics. Just one more game for the women, the 7/8 play-off with Ireland after Team GB lost to China.

I don't quite understand why they have to do the 'Magician's Assistant' routine in among all the stuff that looks totally impossible and awesome

That men’s 800m freestyle was brilliant

That men’s 800m freestyle was brilliant Unreal. Last 200m was super, usually there's a clear winner kicking on at that point but there was 2 lead changes and a strong push from Finke to challenge too. More to come from Wiffen in the 1500m (and a shot to nothing in the 10k maybe) means this might be a better Olympics than even London for Irish medals. Assuming the rowers and boxers can dig something out again.

Excuse my ignorance but why is Dan Wiffen being referred to as the first Gold medalist from Northern Ireland since 1988 if he's representing Ireland and not Great Britain and Northern Ireland?
I get that he's eligible for both. Lots of people have dual nationality but we don't normally refer to them as being from the place they decided not to represent. Surely by sporting definition and what is used for the record books he's 'from' Ireland?
Same with Ireland's Rory McIlroy. Feels a bit cake and eat it but I guess there's more to it.

He's from Northern Ireland though, he just chooses to represent Ireland at the Olympics. If he had been representing GBNI and won the medal the same statement would be true.

Andy Murray will play at least one more competitive match with the tie break win, was rather tight.

I understand that, it's just not how these records are normally framed. Maybe it's just the BBC website trying to claim him. Regardless, hell of a swim.

Multi screening the 4x200m relay and Murray/Evans match tie break was intense. Could hardly breath.

Just catching up on the 4x200m. Man, swimming relay finals are just awesome. Powerful stuff from GB&NI and Widdington from Aus had a ridiculous swim in the 3rd leg considering he just finished the 800m (300m of which under WR pace from him) a short time ago. Mental.
Really feeling the Olympic vibe now!

Beth Potter won Bronze in the Women's Triathlon, dodging turds in the Sienne and holding off 2 French athletes in the process.

Watching the synchronised diving and the Chinese are a league of their own.
Incredible.
Watching these athletes from China, North Korea and GB all share a hug and celebrate is awesome.

Superb performance from Alex Yee in the Triathlon. He looked done on the run, but made his move at the perfect time.
And the BBC could do a lot better with their commentary. Letting us know distances remaining would be a good start.

Heh. Call an Ambulance! But not for Yee.

Amazing, I'm looking forward to hearing from him.
I want to know if he was confidently running to a set pace the whole time or whether he thought he was running for Silver only to suddenly see Hayden fading in the last km.
