I just sat on the menus last night listening to the music. I was a bit disappointed that the items under ‘Extras’ included a bloody EULA.

That music is amazing. I found it on Spotify, which then lead to an awesome mix of music from Jusant, Planet of Lana and others. I could waste an evening doing nothing but listen to music like that.

Reached the middle Khamoon level and still really enjoying this, whilst taking my sweet time and trying to find all the secrets. The combat has ramped up with the mummies/skelllies; it’s easy to get stun locked to death and some of the environments to fight them are a bit unfair. I think Palace Midas has been my favourite so far. I really like it when you think an areas inaccessible, but then you reach it later and look down on where you were. Class game this

I think that’s my favourite stage, too. It’s very rewarding looping back around to the start after 20 - 30 minutes of getting lost. The thing is, the levels aren’t exactly huge. They’re just well paced.

Just finished TR1, starting 2 was a very odd experience. It's the one I played the most when I was a kid and doing the first 4 levels was like stepping in a time machine.
I went into some weird meditative state remembering every secret and method to beating the level. Maybe this time I will actually complete the damn thing, as I don't think I ever got past the shipwreck level.

Made a start in TR2; it’s fair to say it doesn’t fuck about. The start is gentle enough, but then come bullet proof spiders/birds and an evil timed series of traps with no time to take a breath between spiked walls, collapsing floors and sword blades. Finally got to Venice after an embarrassing number of restarts and I remember why I was never as keen on this game. I think I’ll be using the level skip a fair bit to get back to my tombs.

Yeah. It does feel like a ‘direct’ sequel in regards to difficulty. In the same way Super Mario Galaxy 2 just picks up the baton from the first one and continues that upward curve.

I beat TR1 with tank controls and decided to try and do TR2 with modern. I... actually kinda prefer the modern controls now. They're not brilliantly implemented, but with the recent camera fixes, they're generally a nice way to play once you've figured out what some of the binds are.

I’m slowly making progress through TR2. A level per week at least. Gotta say, it’s not as great as I remember. The levels look nicer, but after the first few the layouts become really stretched out and dull. And so many rooms after a long corridor have an enemy hidden right by the door that you can’t bait out.
I’m not saying it’s bad or anything, but it feels like the general level design is a notable step down on the first game.

Lots of big blocky blokes with pipes if memory serves

Indeed. I think with these locations they obviously tried to create more realistically planned locations, perhaps. Obviously they’re not very realistic, but it seems as if the puzzling has transformed into more of a lock and key affair, with plenty of key cards from dead bodies and backtracking to shifting platforms.
I mean, the level design in the first game drops off at the very end, but everything before that feels different and fun to explore. Each level has its own personality simply from its layout. That is here for the opening few levels, but by the time you’re done with the opera house, it feels more like a Doom game.
Not to moan for the sake of it. I’m still enjoying it. Just not as much as I expected.

And they've apparently taken the HD Lara Pinups off of the walls in TR3, so you might as well stop playing now.

I quite like the locations of TR2, the Venice level kinda reminds me of the end of Casino Royale in some ways. While the Maria Dorea levels go on a bit, I think they do a nice job of testing the notion that a "tomb" needs to be an ancient ruin. The later levels are more traditional too.
Too much shooting though, for sure. And some slightly lame design choices like forced damage drops where they put a medkit next to the drop. They obviously knew the shooting wasn't up to much at the time as well given how many health packs the enemies drop.
I'd quite like a remake of TR2 if they found a way to make the platforming interesting in modern 3D. The underwater levels could be really atmospheric.

This has made me decide to play through the original on PS1 like a tosser.
I've never gone as far back as the original before besides pottering around the first level. Back in the day I'd spent most of my time trying and failing to get on with 2 and 3 (and regrettably AoD).
So far I honestly think the very first one holds up the best. It's the combat. They never improved it mechanically after the original but they pushed it past its breaking point in later games I feel. I'm literally having an easier time fighting the dinosaurs. Or more accurately when I die to a dinosaur it's like "that's fair. I got eaten by a dinosaur" rather than being cheesed by a grunt who closes in right behind me and gives me no room to fight back while I'm wrestling with a camera and taking tiny steps trying to face him.
Maybe this is precisely the stuff that has been fixed with the new control modes. But based on the original releases I think I officially have TR1 as my favourite now

Tbh the original has a pretty ridiculous amount of shooty shooty by the end as well, they were just sensible enough to avoid hitscan enemies. Wreck of Maria Doria has 35 kills in it compared to 32 in Atlantis in the original.

Duffking I did discover somebody had recreated the first level (maybe more?) of Tomb Raider 2 in the Unreal 5 engine.

Pretty much just doing one level an evening at the moment, when I can drag myself away from Tekken 8. It's a wonderful cleanser, tbh. Nostalgia is on point, and there's just something incredibly satisfying about slowly and methodically working through a level. I'm just about to start the Egypt portion of TR1, so pretty much the last third of the game. I'm also playing with the remastered graphics and modern controls, though I have had two occasions now when I needed to switch to the old control scheme to pull off certain platforming moves. I'm probably being dense but is there no way to drop down for a ledge hang on modern controls? Ditto the backwards flip from standing with your back to an edge? There is (or was) a brilliant bit on the Oil Rig level towards the end of TR2, where you needed to backflip off a ladder, flip around the air, and grab a ladder on the opposite wall.

I think that's a little later in the China level, but it's definitely a cool moment. And also baffling for many because the game doesn't tell you you can do it. That's a move that's easier on modern controls because going from A to B is a lot easier than X to B.

Censorship! Erasing history! How DARE they take those low poly textures away, how will I ever see lewd pics of Lara now?
In the Bartoli Hideout level, there's some wild bullshit with human enemies huh? Climbing up out of the water to have the door open and a guy starts blasting you and nothing you can do about it. In that little boathouse too you can look into it through the window to see it's completley empty but when you walk inside an enemy spawns to your right. Feels like I've killed more enemies than all of the Nepal levels in 1 and it's only the second level.

When reading the headline, I didn't approve of removal. They should be preserved as original presented, warts and all. Disclaimers at the front should be sufficient. Then I see they are still present in the original graphics mode and realise, once again, people are going to get grumpy and start demanding refunds over nothing.

Yep. Was the 5th comment for that article.
It's on sale this week on Xbox and I'm tempted.

Finished TR2 the other day - all with the modern controls. Now I'm used to them, I do actually prefer them. Gonna do golden mask at some point then TR3, which I've not played before.
